For an FFmpeg stream sent to YouTube over RTMP, use FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer with output-recovery options so it can try to reconnect after a temporary output failure. If FFmpeg exits, use an operating-system service manager to restart the process. Then verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room: an FFmpeg process that is still running does not necessarily mean YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
First identify what failed
“Network outage” can describe several different failures, and the fix depends on which link broke:
- Input failure: FFmpeg can no longer read its source. Output recovery does not necessarily restore an unavailable input.
- Output failure: FFmpeg still has media to send, but its connection to YouTube’s RTMP destination has failed. The
fifooutput-recovery pattern is aimed at this case. - Host network failure: The computer has lost connectivity. FFmpeg can retry, but it cannot send until the host’s route to the internet works again.
- YouTube configuration or service issue: A wrong stream key, inactive stream configuration, or YouTube-side problem may prevent a healthy feed even after the network returns.
FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags are protocol-specific; they are not a general fix for an RTMP output. Use them only when they apply to an HTTP input or connection. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Configure FFmpeg to recover its RTMP output
Use the documented FIFO pattern
FFmpeg documents a FIFO pseudo-muxer pattern for continuing real-time processing during temporary output failures and attempting recovery. The essential options include -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a recovery wait time. The manual’s example uses ellipses for the media and destination details, so it is a pattern—not a complete command to paste unchanged:

[your YouTube RTMP destination]Keep your working input, stream mapping, codecs, and YouTube destination. Adapt the output section to the syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build; check that build’s documentation and logs before relying on an option. The documentation’s example is intended to retry recovery every second indefinitely, but the exact behavior depends on the available options and their values in your version. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
Choose retry behavior deliberately
The FIFO options include max_recovery_attempts and recover_any_error. In the documented interface, zero for max_recovery_attempts means unlimited attempts. Retrying broadly with recover_any_error can also keep retrying persistent problems, such as bad configuration or authentication, instead of resolving them. Use the options documented by your installed build, and inspect logs so repeated failures do not go unnoticed.

Preserve the real YouTube stream settings
Use the stream URL and stream key for the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: YouTube says it directs and authorizes the encoder feed, so do not publish it or expose it in shared logs or scripts. Check the active stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings rather than assuming they are enabled or disabled. YouTube’s guidance is available in its encoder setup instructions.
Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
FIFO recovery helps when FFmpeg stays alive and can retry its output. It cannot recover a process that has terminated. For that separate failure mode, configure a supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg again after failure. A service-manager restart policy addresses process exit; it does not prove that a process still running is sending usable media, and it does not itself fix an unavailable source, network, or invalid stream key.

An FFmpeg-user mailing-list post illustrates using systemd to restart FFmpeg, but its example concerns RTSP camera input and recording, not a verified YouTube streaming recipe. Adapt service settings to your own host and command rather than copying its timeouts or input parameters as if they were YouTube requirements: FFmpeg-user discussion.
Verify recovery from YouTube’s side
- Check FFmpeg’s state and logs. Determine whether the process is alive and whether it reports output errors, repeated retries, or termination.
- Open the active stream in Live Control Room. Check the incoming stream’s health and read the specific error message rather than treating a live process as proof of a working broadcast.
- Follow the indicated cause. Depending on the error, check outbound connectivity, encoder state, stream URL and key, and the selected stream’s settings.
- Test recovery deliberately. Where practical, test a controlled interruption and observe both FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring audio and video quality; its live streaming troubleshooting guidance explains stream-health checks.
Do not assume reconnection will look seamless to viewers. YouTube’s response depends on the active stream and its settings, so confirm what the receiver reports after recovery.

Reduce network-related failures
YouTube recommends a reliable connection and sufficient outbound bandwidth with headroom. Its streaming tips warn, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A wired Ethernet connection can be one part of a reliable setup when the streaming computer uses Ethernet, but it will not repair a failed router, ISP outage, bad stream key, FFmpeg error, or YouTube-side issue.
