To make an OBS-based YouTube stream recover from a brief interruption, enable Automatically Reconnect in OBS and choose retry settings, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. This can reconnect OBS’s output, but it cannot guarantee YouTube will keep the same live event open after every outage. Test your setup before leaving it unattended.
What reconnect settings do—and do not—restart
There are three separate failure points: the encoder can stop, the network connection can fail, or YouTube can end the live event. OBS’s automatic reconnect retries its streaming output connection. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether the encoder can start or stop an event. Neither setting restores power to a failed computer or fixes an ISP outage.
YouTube’s published encoder guidance describes how to start and end a stream, while OBS documents output reconnection. Taken together, they do not establish a guarantee that an event already ended by YouTube will reopen as the same event after an arbitrary outage. Actual behavior can vary with OBS version, stream settings, outage length, and event status. Treat reconnect as a mitigation, not a promise of uninterrupted viewing.
Set up automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open the reconnect controls: In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose retry settings: Set a retry count and initial retry delay that suit the interruption window you can tolerate. There is no universal default to rely on; check the values in your installed OBS version.
- Account for increasing waits: OBS’s output API specifies that the retry wait doubles on each retry. Attempts therefore are not necessarily spaced at a fixed interval.
- Check the connection details: Confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube service, server URL, and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and key.

Review YouTube’s event settings
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room for the stream.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Enable auto-start if the encoder should be able to start the event; these controls do not repair a failed internet connection.
- If you reuse stream settings, verify the copied auto-start and auto-stop selections rather than assuming they match your intended behavior.
- If OBS reports a startup error, check the current stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder if needed.

Test the recovery before relying on it
- Start a test stream and watch both OBS and the YouTube watch page or Live Control Room.
- Briefly interrupt the network connection, then observe whether OBS reconnects, whether YouTube still considers the event live, and what viewers see.
- For a backup-encoder setup, test the handoff. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Check stream health during the test and repeat it under conditions that resemble the failures you need to handle.
A successful brief test demonstrates behavior under those test conditions only; it does not establish recovery after every outage. YouTube’s live encoder tips include failover testing and stream-health monitoring.

Troubleshoot repeated disconnects

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity, and that the cause may lie outside OBS. YouTube documents the current-key recovery step in its encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Copyright and archive considerations for a 24/7 channel
Automatic reconnection only addresses the connection path; it does not make the content eligible to stream or resolve rights issues. Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright safety checklist before leaving a channel on continuously. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a continuous stream beyond 12 hours.
