You can configure a Windows PC and OBS to resume a YouTube stream after power returns, but no single setting does the whole job. The computer must power back on, Windows must launch OBS, OBS must connect after the network is ready, and YouTube must accept the encoder feed. YouTube’s Auto-start setting helps with the final step; it does not turn on the PC or launch OBS. Configure and test each link in that chain.
What has to happen for the stream to recover
A power outage can interrupt a stream at several points. Recovery depends on the outage ending, the PC starting, Windows and OBS starting correctly, the internet connection becoming available, and YouTube receiving a valid feed. A failure at any one point can leave the channel offline even if the other settings are correct.
- Local live video: Your camera or other source, encoder PC, and network equipment must have power and restart as needed. Automatic OBS startup cannot restore a camera or other equipment that remains off.
- Prerecorded video: A local PC-based loop has the same power and startup dependencies. A cloud service can remove the home PC and connection from that playback chain, but it is a different workflow from restoring a local live camera feed.
Configure a Windows PC and OBS to restart streaming
1. Make the computer power on when electricity returns
Check the PC or motherboard manual for a firmware setting with a name such as “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or “After Power Failure.” If available, select the option that powers the machine on when AC power returns. Names, availability, and menu locations vary, so use the manual for your exact hardware rather than assuming a universal BIOS path.
This setting only starts the computer. It does not guarantee that Windows will log in, OBS will launch, or the network will be ready.

2. Arrange for OBS to launch and start streaming
An OBS Project forum answer describes adding --startstreaming to an OBS shortcut and placing that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder, or using Task Scheduler. This is community guidance, not a guarantee for every OBS or Windows configuration. Test the behavior on your machine after a normal restart before relying on it.
In particular, do not assume that launching OBS is the same as successfully connecting to YouTube. If Windows starts OBS before the router or internet connection is available, the initial connection may fail. A delayed launch or a retry/check script may help, but the approach depends on your setup and should be tested.

3. Enable YouTube Auto-start for the stream
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enable Auto-start for the relevant stream. YouTube says: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” This lets the encoder control whether the broadcast starts or stops; it does not power on your PC or open OBS.
If you reuse a stream’s settings, YouTube says the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections are copied too. Check the setting on the stream you intend to use rather than assuming a new or reused setup has the desired behavior.

4. Check the encoder’s stream URL and key
OBS needs the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key to send its feed. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the replacement key or the encoder will not be able to send the feed using the old one.
5. Account for network startup time
The router, modem, or internet service may come online later than the PC. A startup task that runs immediately can therefore attempt a connection too early. Consider a delay or a retry/check approach, then test it against the actual equipment and connection.

There is an important difference between reconnecting after an established stream drops and making the first connection attempt while the network is still unavailable. Do not assume that OBS’s behavior in one situation guarantees recovery in the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a UPS only for the outage it can cover
A UPS can keep the PC and network equipment powered through a brief interruption, depending on the connected load and available battery runtime. It cannot promise an uninterrupted broadcast, and it is not a substitute for automatic startup configuration when an outage lasts longer than the UPS can support.

Choose a UPS based on the equipment load and the runtime you need; there is no responsible universal capacity recommendation without those details. A UPS also helps only if the equipment needed for the stream—such as the router and relevant video-source hardware—is connected and within its capacity.
Test the complete recovery chain
- Restart Windows normally. Confirm that OBS launches and that its configured streaming-start behavior works.
- Test network delay. Check what happens if the PC starts before the router or internet connection is ready. Adjust any delay or retry mechanism and test again.
- Test a brief power interruption when safe. Verify that the firmware setting powers the PC back on and that the remaining startup steps occur. Avoid risking equipment or interrupting an important broadcast just to test.
- Check YouTube. Confirm the stream is live in YouTube Live Control Room and on the public watch page. A running PC or an open OBS window alone does not confirm that viewers can see the broadcast.
Recovery timing and behavior vary by hardware, Windows configuration, network, and YouTube’s handling of the incoming stream. Treat a successful test as evidence for that setup, not a guarantee that every future outage will recover identically.
Troubleshoot a stream that did not come back
| What you observe | Likely point of failure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The PC stays off after power returns | Firmware power-restoration behavior is unavailable, disabled, or set to the wrong option. | Check the exact PC or motherboard manual and verify the AC power recovery setting. |
| The PC starts, but OBS does not | Windows startup configuration did not launch OBS. | Check the Startup folder shortcut or Task Scheduler configuration and test after a normal reboot. |
| OBS opens, but the stream does not start | The startup argument or task may not be working as expected, or YouTube Auto-start may not be enabled for that stream. | Verify the OBS startup method and the Auto-start setting in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. |
| OBS attempts to connect but cannot reach YouTube | The internet may not be ready, or the stream URL or key may be incorrect or outdated. | Wait for network readiness; check the encoder destination and update the key if it was reset. |
| OBS appears to stream, but the YouTube broadcast is not live | The feed may not have been accepted or the stream may not have started in YouTube. | Check Live Control Room and the public watch page; distinguish encoder activity from a confirmed live broadcast. |
| A local camera feed is still absent | The camera or other source equipment may not have power or may not have restarted. | Check the source device and its own recovery requirements; restarting OBS cannot restore equipment that is still off. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it does not depend on a home PC or connection to restart after a power outage. It streams the uploaded video—not a live camera feed—and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI works. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
