First find out whether Wowza stopped receiving your source or whether its outgoing YouTube Stream Target failed. A target in Waiting may resume when its configured source returns; a target in Error means Wowza could not connect to YouTube and may need diagnosis and a controlled, version-specific retry. Do not assume every disconnect recovers automatically.
Diagnose the failure before restarting
Wowza’s current guide, updated August 7, 2026, distinguishes three Stream Target states: Waiting means the enabled target is not yet pushing because the source is not connected or the target connection is initializing; Active means Wowza is connected and pushing; Error means Wowza could not connect to the destination. Check the input and target separately so you restart the part that actually failed.
1. Check the incoming source
- In Engine Manager, open Incoming Streams.
- Find the named input and confirm it is Active and receiving data. Review its connections, uptime, and throughput.
- If the input is missing or stopped, restore the encoder, camera, or other source publisher first. An outgoing target cannot send media Wowza is not receiving.
2. Check the Stream Target
- Confirm Stream Targets are enabled for the application and that the individual YouTube target is enabled.
- Read the target state. A Waiting state alone does not prove a permanent failure; check the source and allow connection initialization.
- If the source is active and the target is Active, Wowza reports that it is pushing. Confirm the YouTube event separately before considering recovery complete.
When does a Wowza target resume by itself?
A Wowza Community reply reports that a configured Stream Target waits for its named source and resumes broadcasting when that source reappears. Treat this as practical community guidance, not a guarantee for every Engine version or configuration. If the source returns, observe the target state and YouTube preview before intervening.
A different failure occurs when the source remains active but the outgoing YouTube connection fails. The target may show Error; a community report says an errored destination may not retry by itself after YouTube becomes available again. That behavior is not established as universal. Check your installed version, target configuration, and logs rather than assuming that a server reboot, editing the target, or a particular scheduled task is always required.

Recover a target that is in Error
- Verify the destination details. Compare the target’s YouTube host, application, and stream key/name with the current event in YouTube Live Control Room. Wowza’s documented workflow sends to YouTube over RTMP, normally port 1935. Keep the stream key private.
- Read the Wowza logs. Look for the connection failure and note when it began and whether it follows a source interruption. Use the error and installed Engine version to guide the next step.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the event and ingest configuration, and check whether YouTube receives a preview. A Wowza target marked Active does not by itself confirm that the event is ready for viewers.
- Retry only after the source and destination are checked. If the source is active and the target remains in Error, use a retry method supported by the REST API reference for your installed Wowza Streaming Engine version. The available documentation does not establish a universal target-restart endpoint or a retry script that works across versions.
Safeguards for API-based retries
If you implement automation, monitor both source and target state, record state transitions, and retry only a confirmed target-side failure. Use backoff and a retry limit, then alert an operator if the target remains in Error. Validate each API call against the reference for your exact Engine release; community guidance suggests API automation but does not provide a verified, cross-version implementation.
Check YouTube ingest compatibility
Repeated restarts will not fix a stream that persistently violates ingest requirements. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, video codec options including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Verify current requirements in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Wowza’s guide says, “Your video stream must include audio.” If your source is video-only, Wowza points to ModuleAddAudioTrack. Correct persistent media-format issues before attempting repeated target retries. See Wowza’s YouTube streaming guide.
Troubleshooting by symptom
