How to Resize a Video for YouTube Without Distorting It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard landscape YouTube video, set your editing canvas to 16:9—typically 1920×1080 for 1080p or 1280×720 for 720p. If your footage has a different shape, choose whether to crop it to fill the frame or fit the whole image with space around it. You may not need to resize at all: YouTube adapts its player to different video shapes and devices.

Choose the right shape for your YouTube video

The standard aspect ratio in YouTube’s computer player is 16:9, but YouTube supports other shapes and adapts playback to the video and device. Forcing every video into 16:9 is not necessary. Choose a canvas based on how viewers should see the footage.

  • Standard landscape video: Use a 16:9 canvas. YouTube lists 1920×1080 for 1080p, 1280×720 for 720p, 2560×1440 for 1440p and 3840×2160 for 4K.
  • Short: Use a square or vertical composition. YouTube’s computer-upload instructions allow square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes; check YouTube’s current eligibility rules because platform guidance can change.
  • Other aspect ratios: You can often upload the original shape and let the player adapt rather than adding bars just to make it 16:9.

Resize the video in an editor

  1. Decide the destination. For a conventional landscape upload, select a 16:9 sequence or project. For a Short, choose square or vertical framing and confirm that the video meets YouTube’s current duration rules.
  2. Set the canvas dimensions. For 1080p landscape, use 1920×1080; for 720p, use 1280×720. These are YouTube-listed 16:9 dimensions. Pick a size appropriate to the source: enlarging low-resolution footage does not restore detail that was never recorded.
  3. Place the footage and choose crop or fit. Cropping fills the canvas, but may cut off edges or important details. Fitting preserves the full image, but can leave unused space; if your editor offers a background, you can choose how that space looks. Check faces, text, subtitles and other edge details in the preview.
  4. Keep the source frame rate. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the content was recorded. Its common listed rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 frames per second. Avoid changing frame rate solely because you changed the frame dimensions.
  5. Export with suitable encoding. YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan and AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio. For SDR video, its recommended color space is BT.709. These are recommendations, not a requirement to use a particular editing program.
  6. Review the finished file. Watch the beginning, middle and end at the intended display size. Check for cropped content, unintended borders, distorted proportions, audio problems and an export that does not match the intended dimensions.

Crop or fit: which should you choose?

Choice What happens Use it when
Crop to fill The image fills the target canvas, while parts of the original frame may be cut off. The edges do not contain important action, text or people, and a full-frame composition matters more than preserving every edge.
Fit the full image The entire source image remains visible, but unused canvas may remain around it. Nothing in the original frame should be lost. If desired, fill the unused area with a background rather than cropping the footage.

Neither option is best for every video. Preview the result and make sure the framing does not hide information viewers need. YouTube recommends not baking padding or black bars into a video simply to force a shape; its player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device. Use a suitable export bitrate

YouTube publishes reference bitrates for SDR uploads; these are recommendations, not mandatory caps. For SDR 1080p, its guidance lists 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). Do not treat those figures as universal settings for HDR or for every resolution and frame rate.

Upload the resized video and wait for processing

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Create, then Upload videos.
  3. Select the exported file and complete the upload details.
  4. Check the video’s playback at the resolutions YouTube makes available. YouTube converts uploaded files for playback across devices and network conditions; HD and 4K processing can take longer than lower-resolution processing.

Common resizing problems and fixes

  • The video looks stretched or squashed: The image was likely resized without preserving its proportions. Recheck the project canvas and scaling mode, then use crop or fit rather than stretching.
  • Important content is missing at the edges: The editor is filling the canvas by cropping. Switch to fit, or adjust the crop manually to protect the subject and any text.
  • Bars appear in the exported video: Confirm whether the bars are part of the export or simply unused canvas. If they were added only to force 16:9, consider removing them; YouTube’s player adapts to the video shape.
  • The upload looks soft: A larger export dimension cannot add detail absent from the source. Use a canvas suited to the footage and avoid upscaling as a supposed quality fix.
  • The HD or 4K option is not available immediately: YouTube says higher-quality processing can take longer. Allow processing time and check again.
  • Motion looks different after export: Check that the export retained the recording’s frame rate, as YouTube recommends.
