To reset a YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, select Reset beside the hidden key, then copy the new key into your encoder’s stream settings. Keep your encoder profile and other configuration in place; replace the credential rather than rebuilding the setup. Do the reset before a broadcast if uninterrupted continuity matters: YouTube’s guidance does not specify what happens to an active stream or how quickly the old key is revoked.
What a stream key reset changes
A stream key is the credential an encoder uses to send video to YouTube. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Resetting generates a new key for the current stream settings, so the encoder must use the new value to connect.
The reset instructions tell you to update the key in your encoder; they do not tell you to delete or rebuild encoder profiles, scenes, or other encoder-side settings. YouTube separately supports reusing stream settings for future broadcasts. This is why a reset is best treated as credential rotation: keep the workflow and replace the stored key.
Reset the key and update your encoder
- Sign in with the right permission. Use the Google account for the channel. You must be a channel owner or manager to reset its key; an editor or viewer cannot perform this action.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Choose the stream settings. Select Stream on the left, then locate Stream key.
- Reset the credential. Select Reset next to the hidden stream key.
- Copy the new key into the encoder. Open the stream or output settings in your encoder and replace its saved key. Check that the encoder is also configured with the YouTube Live server URL; YouTube identifies the server URL and key as connection details used by the encoder.
- Confirm the selected stream before sending video. Make sure the encoder is using the intended YouTube stream and the newly generated key, then start the feed.
Keep the rest of your setup intact
In OBS or another encoder, update the stream credential in the connection settings for the relevant service or destination. Avoid changing scenes, sources, overlays, audio routing, or other profile settings unless you have a separate reason to do so. YouTube’s reset steps require updating the encoder’s key; they do not direct you to recreate its production setup.

If you are setting up a future broadcast rather than rotating a compromised key, YouTube’s Reuse settings option can copy a prior stream’s metadata, settings, and key into a new stream, which you can edit after creation. Some returning streamers may also see previous settings, including the key, loaded. Reusing settings is a workflow convenience, not a substitute for rotating a key you believe is exposed.
Reset versus reuse: choose based on your goal
| Your goal | What to do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a key that may have been exposed or otherwise needs rotation | Reset the current key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the new value. | Confirm the encoder is pointed at the intended stream and uses the new key. |
| Use a repeatable setup for a new broadcast | Use Reuse settings when creating the stream, or use a custom reusable stream key if that suits your workflow. | Verify which stream and key are selected. Do not keep using a key you believe is compromised merely to preserve convenience. |
What YouTube does not specify about an active stream
YouTube’s published instructions do not state whether resetting a key during an active broadcast interrupts ingestion, exactly when the old key stops working, or whether there is a temporary transition. Do not rely on an in-progress stream continuing uninterrupted after a reset. If continuity matters, schedule the rotation before going live, update the encoder, and confirm the connection before the broadcast.

Troubleshooting a key change
- Reset is unavailable: Check that you are signed in as a channel owner or manager. Editors and viewers do not have permission to reset the key.
- The encoder still cannot connect: Confirm that you replaced the old key with the newly generated one and that the correct stream is selected. Check the YouTube Live server URL as well as the key.
- The wrong stream appears selected: Return to Live Control Room and verify the intended stream settings. In the encoder, select the matching destination and enter that stream’s key.
- You expected your scenes or profile to be erased: The reset directions call for updating the encoder key, not rebuilding the encoder. Keep the rest of your configuration unless you have changed it for another reason.
- You are streaming from a webcam: The reset instructions discussed here apply to encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams.
Before going live
- Confirm you are changing the key for the correct YouTube channel and stream.
- Use an owner or manager account to reset the key.
- Replace the saved key in the encoder and verify the YouTube Live server URL.
- Check the selected stream and test the connection before a broadcast where continuity matters.
- Remember that YouTube’s broader live-streaming guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days.
