Best Encoder Settings for YouTube Live Streaming on a Low-End PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, an 8 Mbps video bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval. This is a sensible baseline from YouTube’s current ingest guidance, not a guarantee that a particular older computer can encode it smoothly. Test with the movement and audio you expect to stream, then adjust based on the encoder and YouTube stream-health feedback.

Recommended starting settings

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps A conservative starting point; YouTube’s documentation does not benchmark low-end PCs.
Video codec H.264 YouTube supports H.264 for live ingest, and its bitrate table provides H.264 values for these resolutions and frame rates.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) YouTube recommends CBR.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30 This is YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate, not a hard minimum. Its stated minimum for 720p30 is 3 Mbps.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 kbps stereo; 44.1 kHz stereo sampling These are YouTube’s listed audio recommendations.
Other video settings Progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR Additional settings in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it for encrypted transmission. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1, but its published guidance does not establish which codec or encoder implementation will perform best on an unspecified low-end PC. For this baseline, use H.264 rather than assuming another codec will reduce load.

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations and bitrate values are documented in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Those are ingest settings: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so your encoder’s output settings are not necessarily what every viewer receives.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed the upload bandwidth available to you. Run a speed test, but do not treat a single result as proof that your connection will sustain a live stream. Test the actual setup and watch stream health while broadcasting. If 8 Mbps is not stable, reduce the video bitrate and test again; if needed, lower the resolution too. Lower bitrate can mean lower picture quality.

H.264 output YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current H.264 ingest figures, not guarantees of stable performance from a particular PC or network. The recommended numbers are not minimums. YouTube notes that recommended bitrate ranges depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. See its encoder settings guidance and streaming tips.

720p30 or 720p60 on an older computer?

Begin with 720p30. At 60 fps, the encoder must produce twice as many frames each second as at 30 fps; that is a general technical consideration, not a YouTube-published benchmark for low-end PCs. YouTube lists the same recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean both frame rates will be equally easy for your machine to encode.

Try 720p60 only if your content benefits from smoother motion and a representative test remains stable. For documentaries, interviews, presentations or other mostly measured footage, 30 fps is often a practical starting choice; judge the result on your own material rather than treating that as a platform rule. Consider 1080p only after a stable test at 720p and with enough sustained upload bandwidth for the higher bitrate YouTube recommends.

Test before going live

  1. Set the baseline in your encoder. Choose 1280 × 720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, 8 Mbps video bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval. Apply the audio and other settings listed above where your encoder exposes them.
  2. Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and confirm that available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream’s total bitrate. If it does not, reduce bitrate or resolution before the test.
  3. Run a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real program. A static desktop test will not reveal how the actual scene behaves. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Watch stream health and messages. Check for warnings or instability during the test and while live. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event.
  5. Change one setting at a time. If the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate first when bandwidth is the constraint. If encoding itself is not keeping up, try 30 fps or a lower resolution, then repeat the representative test.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble: the connection may not sustain the configured total bitrate. Retest upload capacity, lower video bitrate, and test again; reduce resolution if needed.
  • The picture stutters or the encoder cannot keep up: the PC may be struggling with the chosen workload. Try 720p30 instead of 60 fps or step down the resolution. YouTube does not publish a universal low-end-PC preset, so verify changes in a representative test.
  • The stream is stable but looks soft or blocky: bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution and scene. If the upload connection allows it, test a higher bitrate up to YouTube’s recommended value for that output. If it does not, a lower resolution may look better at the bitrate you can sustain.
  • Audio is absent or inconsistent: verify that the encoder is sending an audio track and check its device selection and levels. YouTube’s listed audio options include AAC or MP3, 128 kbps stereo and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling.
  • Keyframe or encoder settings are rejected: confirm that the keyframe interval is 2 seconds or, at minimum, no more than YouTube’s 4-second limit. Check the encoder’s output configuration against YouTube’s recommended settings.
