How to Request an Autism Needs Assessment and Support for Your Child

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by telling a health or education professional what you are seeing and asking for the local developmental or autism assessment route. The correct entry point depends on where your family lives. In England, that may be a GP, your child’s school, or a health visitor for a child who is not yet school age. In the United States, you can request public early-intervention or school evaluation separately from a medical autism diagnosis.

Do not wait for a diagnosis before asking about practical help. Screening is not diagnosis, and assessment, education eligibility, and symptom-focused services answer different questions. You can often pursue an assessment and support for current difficulties at the same time.

First identify the route in your location

Autism assessment is not organized through one worldwide system. Before making a call, identify the country, state or region, the child’s age, and whether you are seeking a clinical diagnosis, developmental services, educational support, or all three.

Use the child’s primary-care clinician, local public-health service, education authority, or early-intervention program to ask for the named pathway in your area. Ask who is allowed to make a referral, whether a parent can self-refer, what forms are required, and what support can begin while the request is being processed. Published waiting times, funding rules, and eligibility criteria vary locally and are not established by a general guide.

England

NHS guidance says a referral may come through a GP, the child’s school, or, for a child who is not yet school age, a health visitor. Start with the professional who knows your child or can access the local pathway. If obtaining a referral is difficult, NHS guidance says you can ask for another GP opinion.

An NHS assessment is an England-specific example, not a universal process. Ask the local service whether the referral goes to a community paediatrics team, an autism assessment team, or another named service, and how information from school or nursery should be sent.

United States

Public-service and medical pathways can run in parallel. For a child under 3, families can contact their state early-intervention system directly to request an evaluation; the CDC says you do not have to wait for a doctor’s referral or an autism diagnosis. For a child aged 3 or older, contact the local public school system about an evaluation and possible educational services. Exact eligibility and procedures are determined locally.

A school evaluation is not the same as a medical diagnosis. It determines whether the child may qualify for educational services, while a clinical assessment addresses diagnosis, development, and related health needs.

Elsewhere

Ask your primary-care clinician, public health authority, education authority, or child-development service which organization accepts requests. If several systems exist, ask each one what it can decide, what information it needs, and whether it can begin needs-based support without a completed autism diagnosis.

Make the request: a practical sequence

  1. Write down concrete concerns. Describe what happens rather than using only labels. Include communication, play, interaction, routines, sensory responses, learning, sleep, self-care, safety, and daily participation. Note when the behavior occurs, how often, what makes it easier or harder, and how it affects the child or family.
  2. Contact the appropriate first service. Tell the clinician, school, health visitor, early-intervention program, or education authority that you have developmental concerns and want to know whether a formal evaluation is appropriate. Ask for developmental screening if it has not been done, but do not treat screening as a diagnosis.
  3. Ask who makes the referral. Confirm whether the professional you contacted can refer directly, whether a parent must complete a form, and whether another service has to send records. In England, the GP, school, or health visitor may be the entry point. In the United States, a parent can contact early intervention directly for a child under 3, or the public school system for a child aged 3 or older.
  4. Request interim help in the same conversation. Ask what can start now for the child’s actual difficulties, such as communication, sleep, participation, or learning. Ask whether speech or other symptom-focused services require an autism diagnosis, and ask the school or early-years setting what adjustments are available while an evaluation is pending.
  5. Send useful examples and records. Provide existing developmental, medical, therapy, nursery, or school reports. Ask how the service wants information submitted. Do not postpone the referral while trying to create a perfect file; a clear description of current needs is more useful than a delayed request.
  6. Confirm the next action. Before ending the call or meeting, write down the service name, the person responsible, documents still needed, the expected contact method, and what to do if you hear nothing. Ask whom to contact if your child’s needs change while waiting.

Screening, assessment, diagnosis, and service eligibility are different

Using the right term prevents a common delay: waiting for one system to complete a task that belongs to another.

Process What it is for Who may provide or request it What it does not establish
Developmental screening A brief check that indicates whether a closer look may be warranted. A clinician or other trained provider; concerns from a parent or provider can prompt it. It does not diagnose autism.
Autism-specific screening A focused check for signs associated with autism. Often part of child health care; local practice determines the tool and process. A positive screen is not a diagnosis, and a child should not have to wait for a scheduled screening age if concerns are present.
Formal developmental or autism assessment An in-depth evaluation of development, behavior, strengths, support needs, and possible co-occurring conditions. A multidisciplinary or specialist team, depending on the local service. It is not the same as an education-service eligibility decision.
Early-intervention evaluation Determines eligibility for public developmental services in the United States for children under 3. The state early-intervention system; a parent can request an evaluation directly. It does not replace a medical diagnosis.
School evaluation Determines whether a child may qualify for educational evaluation or services. The local public school system in the United States for children aged 3 and older. It does not necessarily provide a clinical autism diagnosis.

The CDC describes U.S. recommendations for routine developmental screening at 9, 18, and 30 months and autism-specific screening at 18 and 24 months. These are recommended screening points, not a rule that a parent must wait until those ages to raise a concern. The CDC advises screening when a parent or provider is concerned.

What each pathway can provide

Clinical assessment and public-service evaluation are complementary rather than interchangeable. Choosing one does not mean you must give up the other.

Feature Clinical autism or developmental assessment Early-intervention or school evaluation
Primary purpose Clarifies whether autism or another developmental condition is present, describes the child’s profile, and considers related health needs. Considers eligibility for developmental or educational services based on functional needs and local rules.
Typical entry point Primary-care clinician, school, health visitor, or local autism/developmental team, depending on jurisdiction. State early-intervention program for a U.S. child under 3, or local public school system from age 3.
Information considered Developmental and medical history, caregiver information, observation or tasks, and reports from school or nursery. Developmental functioning, participation, learning, communication, and the education authority’s eligibility criteria.
Outcome A clinical report stating the diagnostic conclusion, strengths, support needs, and any other conditions identified. An eligibility or service decision, with educational or developmental supports if the child qualifies.
Timing and interim help Ask about the local wait and whether needs-based support can start before the assessment. Ask how quickly an evaluation can occur and what services or classroom adjustments are available during the process.

What happens during an autism assessment

The NHS describes children having one or more appointments with a team of different professionals. The exact team and sequence depend on the local service, but the process may include:

  • A detailed discussion of developmental and medical history, including early milestones and changes over time.
  • Questions for parents or caregivers about communication, social interaction, play, routines, sensory responses, behavior, learning, and daily life.
  • Observation of the child or activities in which the child is asked to complete tasks.
  • Review of reports from a GP, nursery, school, therapists, or other people who know the child.
  • Consideration of other conditions that can occur alongside autism, with additional tests or referrals if needed.

The team may not see every behavior during an appointment. That is why examples from home, school, and other settings matter. Tell the team about masking, differences between familiar and unfamiliar environments, communication methods, and situations that trigger distress or shutdown. Describe both abilities and difficulties; an assessment is intended to build a complete profile, not a list of problems.

Prepare without turning preparation into a barrier

Make a short observation record

For each concern, record the situation, what you observed, how often it occurs, what happened immediately before it, and what helped. For example: “During group instructions, my child often does not respond to spoken directions, watches peers, and completes the task only after a visual demonstration.” Concrete examples are easier for a team to interpret than “does not listen.”

Collect existing information

  • Developmental or medical reports and medication information.
  • Nursery, school, individualized education, attendance, or behavior reports.
  • Speech, occupational, psychological, or other therapy reports, if available.
  • Examples of communication, play, sensory responses, sleep, eating, or self-care concerns across settings.
  • Questions about safety, distress, regression, or changes that require prompt attention.

Ask the assessment service whether it accepts written notes, school forms, videos, or reports and how they should be transmitted. Keep copies. You do not need to purchase a tracker, book, or communication aid to be taken seriously, and no particular product is required to request an assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the child’s strengths and preferences

Record interests, successful communication methods, relationships, activities the child enjoys, and situations in which the child participates well. The NHS says the final report should describe what the child is good at as well as the help they may need.

Ask for support while you wait

A pending assessment is not a reason to suspend help. Tell the school or early-years staff what the child needs now and ask what practical adjustments are available. Depending on the child’s difficulty and local rules, this might involve clearer communication, changes to routines, support for participation, or help with a specific learning or daily-living problem.

Ask the primary-care clinician whether referrals for specific difficulties can proceed independently of the autism assessment. CDC guidance notes that services for symptoms such as language delays often do not require a formal autism diagnosis. The provider must decide what is appropriate and available for your child.

NHS guidance says a GP or education professional can explain what support is available while you are waiting, or if you cannot obtain a referral. NHS England pathway guidance says parents should not be excluded from potentially beneficial support solely because a child is waiting for assessment. Those statements apply to the England pathway; families elsewhere should ask local providers for the equivalent policy.

Use a coordinated request to school or nursery

Ask for a meeting with the staff member responsible for additional learning or special educational needs. Bring two or three specific examples, explain the effect on participation or safety, and ask what can be tried immediately, who will monitor it, and when it will be reviewed. Share relevant assessment information with the setting only through the service’s approved process and with appropriate consent.

U.S. wording for a school request

For a U.S. public-school evaluation, the CDC suggests this wording: “I have concerns about my child’s development and I would like to have my child evaluated through the school system for preschool special education services.” Adapt it to your child’s age and local school process, and keep a dated copy of the request.

Understand the report and challenge confusion

The NHS says an assessment report should explain whether the child is autistic, the child’s strengths, the help they may need, and any other conditions identified. When the report arrives, ask the team to define unfamiliar terms and identify which recommendations are immediate, which require another service, and who is responsible for follow-up.

Ask how the relevant parts can be shared with the school, early-intervention provider, or other support services. A diagnosis or assessment report is useful only when the people supporting the child can translate it into practical changes, subject to privacy and consent rules.

If the result is unclear or you disagree with it, ask the team to explain the evidence and decision. In the UK context, NHS guidance describes asking for another team’s opinion or seeking an independent assessment as possible options. These routes, costs, and rights are not universal, so confirm them with the local service before taking action.

Common problems and what to do next

“The clinician says to wait and see.”

Ask what specific change would prompt reassessment, when the child will be reviewed, and what support can start now. Provide concrete examples from more than one setting and ask whether a developmental screen, specialist referral, or school evaluation is appropriate.

“The school says a medical diagnosis is required.”

Ask which service or rule requires it and whether the school can still evaluate educational needs or provide interim adjustments. In the United States, school evaluation and medical diagnosis are separate pathways; local eligibility rules still apply.

“We are on a waiting list and the child’s needs are increasing.”

Contact the named service again with an updated description of the change. Ask the clinician and school about symptom-focused referrals, safety planning, communication support, and a review of interim adjustments. Do not assume that being on a list prevents other services from responding to current needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The assessment team did not see the behavior we described.”

Explain the settings in which it occurs, provide written examples or reports, and ask whether information from school or nursery can be added. Ask how the team accounts for differences between appointments and everyday environments.

“We do not know whom to call.”

Start with the child’s primary-care clinician or education setting and ask for the local named referral pathway. In the United States, contact the state early-intervention system directly for a child under 3, or the local public school system for a child aged 3 or older. In England, ask a GP, school, or health visitor, depending on the child’s age and circumstances.

Questions to take to your first appointment or call

  • What is the correct assessment or support pathway for my child’s age and our location?
  • Can you refer us directly, or do we need to contact another service?
  • What information and consent forms are required?
  • What are the expected stages of the evaluation, and who will contact us?
  • What support can begin before an autism assessment is complete?
  • Which services address the child’s current communication, sleep, learning, sensory, or daily-living needs?
  • What should we do if the child’s needs change while we wait?
  • How will the result be explained, and how can it be shared with school or other providers?
  • If we disagree with or do not understand the outcome, what review or second-opinion process applies here?

The essential points

  • Find the local entry point instead of assuming every country uses the same referral system.
  • Describe observable behavior and its effect on daily life; do not wait for perfect paperwork.
  • Screening can indicate the need for further evaluation, but it does not diagnose autism.
  • Clinical assessment, U.S. early-intervention evaluation, and school evaluation serve different purposes and may be pursued in parallel.
  • Ask for needs-based support while waiting; a completed autism diagnosis is not always required for help with a specific difficulty.
  • Expect the assessment team to consider information from home, clinic, and school and to explain strengths, support needs, and any other conditions identified.
