How to Report a Website Selling Products Intended for Self-Harm

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Report the exact page through the website’s own safety or contact channel. If the page is hosted on a marketplace, social network, or other service, report the listing or account to that service as well. Do not publicize the seller or product, and do not buy or handle an item to prove your concern. If a person may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or law enforcement. The correct authority and legal standard depend on your country; the legal examples below are specific to the UK.

Choose the right reporting route first

The operator of the page normally has the fastest ability to remove or restrict it, so start with the site or platform that hosts the material. Your route depends on who controls the page, how urgent the situation is, and where you are located.

Situation First report Additional action
A standalone website or online shop controls the page Use its report link, safety form, contact form, or designated reporting email. Identify the exact product page. If the conduct appears illegal, report it to your local law-enforcement or online-harm authority.
A marketplace hosts the listing Use the marketplace’s listing, seller, or safety-report function. Also notify the seller’s underlying website or payment/service provider only when that service supplies an appropriate abuse channel; do not contact the seller directly.
A social network hosts a post, account, or advertisement Use the platform’s in-app report flow or specialized self-harm form. Report the specific post and the account when both options are available. Escalate imminent danger to emergency services.
The platform has no clear route or has not acted Use a specialist guide such as Report Harmful Content for platform-specific instructions. Keep the original report details and use the service’s appeal or escalation path if one exists.
An identifiable person may be in immediate danger Contact local emergency services or law enforcement immediately. Use the platform report route too, if doing so will not delay urgent help.

These routes are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. A platform report addresses the content; an emergency call addresses an immediate threat to a person.

Before you report: protect yourself and avoid amplification

Do not repost the URL, product photographs, seller name, or screenshots on public forums. Public discussion can drive more attention to harmful material. Samaritans’ guidance, Responding to online activity around suicide and self-harm, advises reporting directly to the host and cautions against responding alone.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  • Stop browsing as soon as you have enough information to identify the page.
  • Do not open linked instructions, message the seller, place an order, or handle an item.
  • Do not ask friends to visit the page “to check it.” Send them only the private information they need to help you report it.
  • If viewing the material is distressing, close it and speak with someone you trust.
  • For staff or moderators, follow your organization’s safeguarding procedure and involve a colleague rather than investigating alone.

A report does not require you to prove that an item has been used or to determine the seller’s motive. Explain what is visible and why it appears designed to enable self-harm.

Report a standalone website or shop

Use the site’s own reporting mechanism whenever one is available. It may be labelled Report, Safety, Abuse, Trust and safety, Contact, or Report harmful content. A general customer-service form is acceptable when no specialist route is published, but state clearly that the issue concerns products intended for self-harm.

  1. Record the exact page address privately. Copy the complete URL of the listing or product page, not just the home page. If the page redirects, note the address shown after the redirect as well.
  2. Open the site’s designated form or email. Use a safety or abuse channel in preference to a sales inquiry. Follow any category prompts instead of selecting a vague option such as “other” when a self-harm category is offered.
  3. Describe the material in neutral terms. State that the page offers a product you believe is intended to facilitate self-harm. Explain the visible wording, imagery, or sales claims that support that concern without repeating instructions or methods.
  4. Identify location and scope. Include the page URL, the seller or account name as displayed, and whether the material appears on other pages. Do not add personal information about a suspected victim unless the form specifically requires it for an urgent safeguarding response.
  5. Submit once and save the confirmation. Keep the case number, date, and any acknowledgement. Avoid sending multiple identical reports, which can make it harder for a reviewer to follow the case.

The material available from Samaritans supports clear reporting channels and an acknowledgement or explanation of next steps, but there is no universal evidence checklist for e-commerce websites. Give the reviewer enough information to find the page; do not conduct your own test purchase.

A concise report description

You can adapt wording such as: “This page appears to offer a product intended to enable self-harm. The specific page is [exact URL]. The listing uses the following visible description or imagery: [brief, non-graphic description]. Please review it under your self-harm or harmful-content rules and tell me how this report will be handled.” Put the URL and your factual description in the form’s designated fields rather than publishing them elsewhere.

Report marketplace listings and social posts at the host

A marketplace or social network can act even when the seller’s own site does not. Submit a report against the individual listing or post, then report the seller or account if the service provides a separate option. The host may need both references to understand whether the issue is isolated or recurring.

Marketplaces

  1. Open the listing’s menu or safety link without interacting with the seller.
  2. Select the category covering self-harm, dangerous goods, illegal activity, or another closest safety category supplied by the service.
  3. Paste the exact listing URL and describe what the item is represented as doing.
  4. Attach only non-graphic evidence that the platform requests. Do not upload photographs of an item obtained by purchasing it.
  5. Save the marketplace’s case number and report any materially identical listings separately if the form requires one URL per report.

Social networks

  1. Use the post’s in-app reporting control or the network’s specialized self-harm form.
  2. Report the specific post, image, video, advertisement, or direct message; add an account report when the account itself is promoting the material.
  3. Explain whether the content is offering a product, directing people to a seller, or encouraging self-harm. Those are different facts for a reviewer.
  4. Do not quote or repost harmful text in your own comment. If you must preserve context, keep a private note of the wording and time.

X’s policy, dated March 2026, is one example of a platform rule that accepts reports of content that may encourage or promote self-harm through in-app reporting or a specialized form. It is an example, not a universal procedure: other services use different categories, forms, and definitions.

Distinguish promotion from support or discussion

Not every mention of self-harm is promotion. A post about recovery, support, awareness, or research can discuss the subject without encouraging it. X’s March 2026 policy expressly distinguishes those contexts from content that encourages or promotes self-harm or depicts it without recovery context.

In your report, identify the conduct you actually saw:

  • Support or analysis: a recovery, prevention, news, or research discussion that does not promote the conduct.

Accurate categorization helps a reviewer apply the service’s rules and reduces the risk that legitimate support or educational material is misidentified.

Use a specialist reporting guide when the route is unclear

Report Harmful Content provides step-by-step information for reporting on some major platforms. It can also help when a platform has not resolved an earlier report. Use the guide to find the current form or escalation path for the service involved, then submit the report to that service rather than assuming the guide itself is the enforcement body.

  1. Identify the host shown in the page address or app interface.
  2. Find that service in the specialist guide and follow its current reporting steps.
  3. Return to the host’s form and report the exact page, post, or account.
  4. Record the confirmation and any response deadline the service gives you.
  5. If the original report is closed without action, use the platform’s stated appeal or escalation route and include the original case number.

If the service is not covered, look for its own safety, abuse, or legal-reporting page. Do not substitute a public social-media post for a formal report.

What information to include

Provide only the context needed to locate and assess the material, not a full profile of the seller. Include:

When to contact emergency services or law enforcement

Escalate when the report concerns a person who may be in immediate danger, or when the conduct appears to be a credible criminal matter under local law. Call your local emergency number if someone faces an imminent threat and provide the person’s location and the information you have. Do not wait for a website moderator to respond.

For non-immediate suspected illegality, use the law-enforcement or online-harm reporting channel in your country. Give authorities the exact page and your factual observations. You can report even if you do not know who operates the site; Police.uk says a person can report suspected conduct without knowing the responsible individual.

What the UK sources establish

UK government guidance says the Online Safety Act was passed on 26 October 2023. It includes duties for services concerning content harmful to children and a new offence of intentionally encouraging or assisting serious self-harm. Police.uk describes encouraging or assisting serious self-harm as potentially including sending links to pro-self-harm websites. These statements describe UK law and guidance only; they are not a worldwide legal definition.

What to do if someone is at immediate risk

If the page identifies a person who appears ready to harm themselves, prioritize a real-world safety response. Contact emergency services or law enforcement in the person’s location, if known, and provide the online details. If you know the person personally and can reach them safely, follow local crisis or safeguarding guidance; do not promise secrecy or attempt to manage the situation alone.

Samaritans advises people not to respond alone to harmful online activity and points professionals toward advice and safeguarding procedures. A platform report can run in parallel, but it should not delay an emergency call.

After you submit a report

Keep the confirmation and monitor the service’s response channel without repeatedly revisiting the harmful page. If the service asks for clarification, answer with factual information and avoid copying graphic material. If it closes the case, use its appeal or escalation process and reference the original case number. A lack of visible action does not tell you whether the service reviewed the material; do not retaliate against the seller or publish accusations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the material has affected you, step away from the screen and speak with someone you trust. Professionals should document the report in their organization’s safeguarding system and follow the relevant supervision process.

Common mistakes that can make a report less effective

  • Publicizing the URL: this can increase traffic to the seller and expose others to the material.
  • Reporting only the home page: reviewers may not find the specific listing without its exact address.
  • Using a sales or customer-review channel: a safety or abuse route is more likely to reach the appropriate team.
  • Overstating what you know: describe what the page shows instead of asserting the seller’s identity, intent, or criminal liability as fact.
  • Confusing discussion with promotion: distinguish recovery, prevention, news, or research content from an offer or encouragement.
  • Delaying for proof: do not purchase, handle, or test a product.
  • Handling an urgent case as routine: contact emergency services when a person may be in immediate danger.
  • Assuming one country’s rules apply everywhere: identify your location and use the local authority’s process.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Is anyone in immediate danger? If yes, call local emergency services or law enforcement now, then report the content to the host.
  2. Who hosts the material? Choose the standalone site, marketplace, social network, or other service that controls the page.
  3. Can you reach a safety channel? Use the host’s report link, form, or designated email and include the exact page.
  4. Is the platform route unclear or unresolved? Consult Report Harmful Content for service-specific steps and escalation guidance.
  5. Does the conduct appear illegal? Report it to the relevant local authority under your country’s rules.
  6. Have you protected yourself and others? Stop viewing, do not amplify the material, save the confirmation privately, and seek support if the content is distressing.
