But if “24/7 playlist” means a continuous live broadcast, first identify what supplies the live feed: editing a YouTube playlist does not necessarily change a separate encoder’s queue. You also cannot upload a new file under the old video’s URL; YouTube assigns every new upload a new URL.
First identify what is actually running
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos viewers can play in sequence. A continuous live broadcast assembled by an encoder is a separate feed. YouTube documents playlist membership and live-stream settings separately, and its guidance does not say that editing a playlist changes the media queue of a running encoder. That distinction follows from the separate documented workflows; it does not establish how every encoder behaves.
- If viewers are watching a normal playlist: change the playlist’s entries on YouTube.
- If viewers are watching a live broadcast: find out which encoder or streaming system supplies the feed, then change the queued media in that system if it supports doing so.
Before editing, confirm the destination by opening the public link or live control room. A playlist URL and a live-stream watch page are different things, even if the live program plays the same videos.
Replace an entry in a YouTube playlist
For a one-off change, use YouTube’s desktop interface. YouTube’s help documents adding videos from search, a URL, or your library; removing a playlist item; and changing the order by dragging items.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content → Playlists.
- Open the target playlist on YouTube.
- Add the replacement using search, its URL, or your library.
- On the old entry, open its item menu and choose Remove from .
- Drag entries into the order you want.
Adding and removing are separate actions; YouTube does not promise an atomic swap. Its help also does not promise that an edit propagates immediately to every viewer who is already playing the playlist or that playback will remain uninterrupted during the change. If continuity matters, avoid assuming the order of operations guarantees uninterrupted playback.
Automate changes with YouTube Data API v3
For a repeated or scripted workflow, the Data API represents a playlist entry as a playlist item, distinct from the video it points to. You need OAuth 2.0 authorization for write operations.

- Use
playlistItems.listto find the existing entry and retain its playlist-item ID. - Use
playlistItems.insertto add the replacement video to the playlist. - Use
playlistItems.deletewith the old playlist-item ID to remove the old entry. - If needed, use
playlistItems.updateto set an item’s position.
Do not pass a video ID where an operation expects a playlist-item ID: they identify different objects. Because insertion and deletion are separate requests, the API workflow is not a single atomic replacement either.
If you meant a continuous live broadcast
Do not assume a playlist edit changes what the live audience sees. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers encoder and mobile stream settings and stream keys, but it does not specify how third-party encoders manage their playback queues. Check the system that is actually sending the broadcast and its queue controls before making a change. The steps depend on that encoder or service; there is no universal YouTube playlist control for changing an external encoder’s current media queue.

Can the new upload keep the old video URL?
No. YouTube states: “You can’t replace a video. Any new video you upload to YouTube will get a new URL.” You can modify the existing upload, or use a card to direct viewers to an updated version, but uploading a corrected or edited file creates a separate video URL. Playlist membership can be changed independently: add the new upload and remove the old entry without changing the underlying video file.
