How to Remove Personal Information From People-Search Sites

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove your information from people-search sites, find each profile using your name and other identifying details, submit that site’s opt-out request, verify that the listing disappears, and repeat the process whenever a new listing appears. Manual opt-outs are free, but no single request removes every copy of your data or erases the public records that data brokers use.

What people-search sites collect and publish

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) calls people-search sites “people-finder sites” and classifies them as a type of data broker. They assemble information from multiple sources, create reports, and sell access to people who pay for those reports.

Where the information comes from

A report can combine records from other data brokers, public social-media profiles, and public records. The FTC lists property, driving, voter-registration, criminal and civil records, vital records, and professional licenses among the possible public sources.

What a report may reveal

  • Current and former addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Age or date-of-birth information
  • Relatives and other household connections
  • Properties associated with you
  • Education and employment history
  • Court or financial records

This exposure can be a nuisance, but it can also create a safety risk. The FTC specifically notes that survivors of domestic violence or stalking may not want strangers to locate their home or identify family members.

Prepare before submitting an opt-out request

A little preparation reduces mistaken matches and helps you track which sites have processed your requests.

Make a private identity checklist

  • Write down the variations of your name that you have used publicly, including middle initials, former names, and common misspellings.
  • List current and previous cities or states, but keep this list private.
  • Gather phone numbers and email addresses that may be connected to old profiles.
  • Use a dedicated note or spreadsheet to record the site’s name, profile URL, request date, confirmation number, and follow-up date. Do not publish this log.

Protect sensitive information during verification

Some sites require information to verify that you are the person in the profile. The FTC confirms that verification may be required but does not endorse a particular method. Read the request carefully and provide only what is necessary to complete the opt-out. Do not volunteer extra identity documents or data merely because a form offers an optional field.

If a site asks for information you are not comfortable disclosing, pause and review its privacy notice and opt-out instructions. You can decide not to proceed, or look for another official channel listed by the site.

How to opt out manually, step by step

Manual removal costs nothing, but it has to be repeated across many sites. Use this process for every people-search site where you find a matching profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search for your profile. Search the site for your full name and add an identifying detail such as a phone number, city, or address. Search name variations separately. A name-only match is not enough to confirm that a profile belongs to you.
  2. Confirm the match. Compare the listed locations, relatives, age range, phone numbers, or other details with information you know. Avoid claiming a profile that belongs to someone else.
  3. Find the site’s opt-out instructions. Look for labels such as “opt out,” “remove my information,” “do not sell,” or “privacy choices.” If the link is difficult to find, the FTC recommends searching the site’s name together with the words “opt out” or “remove my information.”
  4. Submit the request through the site’s stated process. Follow the required steps exactly, including selecting the correct profile and entering a response email if one is requested. Complete any confirmation link sent to that email.
  5. Supply only necessary verification information. If identity verification is required, check which fields are mandatory and limit your submission to those fields. Keep a record of what you submitted and when.
  6. Save proof of submission. Record the confirmation number, email, screenshot, or other receipt. The record lets you follow up without repeating the entire process.
  7. Check the result. After the site’s stated processing period, search again using the same identifying details. If the profile remains, use the site’s support or privacy contact shown in its instructions and reference your original request.
  8. Repeat on other sites. People-search sites are separate businesses, so opting out of one does not submit a request to the others.
  9. Recheck periodically. The FTC says information can return when public records change. Search again from time to time and submit a new request when a listing reappears.

Keep your searches from creating more exposure

Use a private browsing window or an account that does not display your public profile while you investigate. Do not post screenshots containing addresses, phone numbers, confirmation codes, or relatives’ details. Store your tracking log in a password-protected location.

What an opt-out removes—and what it cannot remove

The FTC summarizes the immediate effect this way:

After you opt out, the people search site will stop selling your existing information.

That is not the same as deleting the underlying records. An opt-out generally removes the site’s existing report from sale; it does not erase a deed, voter record, court filing, professional-license record, or other government record. A different broker can collect the same public information and publish a new report.

Why a listing can return

  • Public records changed and the site collected the new data.
  • Another data broker supplied an updated record.
  • The site’s matching system created a new profile or duplicate.
  • Your information remains in a report about a relative, neighbor, or associate even after your own profile was removed.

Because of these limits, no responsible opt-out process should promise permanent or universal removal.

California’s centralized DROP option

California residents have an additional free option: the California Privacy Protection Agency’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, known as DROP. It is designed to send one request to more than 600 registered data brokers instead of requiring a separate submission to each participating broker.

Eligibility and 2026 timeline

DROP is for California residents. According to the official 2026 timeline, residents could begin submitting requests on January 1, 2026, and data brokers began processing those requests on August 1, 2026. CalPrivacy says status updates may take up to 90 days. Its July 10, 2026 article reported that more than 325,000 consumers had signed up and submitted requests; that is an agency-published participation figure, not a measure of how many records were deleted.

How DROP matches records

CalPrivacy says DROP hashes the information you submit before sharing matching requests. Participating brokers compare those hashed values with their own hashed records. You can provide optional details to improve the chance of a match, but adding information also requires you to decide whether that disclosure is appropriate for your circumstances.

Possible results

The platform describes several outcomes:

  • Record deleted: the broker deleted the matched record.
  • Record exempted: the broker retained the record under an applicable exemption.
  • Record opted out of sale: the broker stopped selling the matched record but did not delete it.
  • Record not found: the broker did not find a matching record.
  • Pending: the request is still being processed.

A match therefore does not guarantee deletion. It can produce an exemption or a sale opt-out instead.

DROP’s stated limits

CalPrivacy says some public records and data retained under other laws may be exempt. Information that you gave directly to a broker may not be deleted through DROP, although a separate privacy request to that broker may be available. Check the official platform for current eligibility, participating-broker coverage, and instructions before submitting.

Manual opt-out, DROP, or a paid service?

The right approach depends on where you live, how much time you have, and how much visibility you need into each request. The table separates what is established from what varies by site or provider.

Option Eligibility and coverage Cost Identity information Timing and tracking Limits
Manual opt-out Available wherever an individual site offers an opt-out; you must handle each site separately. Free. The individual site may require verification; the exact method varies. Processing time varies by site. You keep your own confirmations and follow-up schedule. Requires repeated work; does not erase public records and listings may return.
California DROP California residents; one request can be sent to more than 600 registered data brokers. Free. Submitted values are hashed before matching; optional details can improve matching. Requests began January 1, 2026; brokers began processing August 1, 2026; CalPrivacy says status updates may take up to 90 days. Some records are exempt, a match may result only in a sale opt-out, and directly supplied information may require a separate request.
Paid removal service Coverage depends on the provider and geography. Check the number and type of sites included. Not stated universally; check the provider’s current terms. Requirements vary by provider and may include information needed to submit requests on your behalf. Ask how often the service scans, whether it sends request and outcome reports, and how it handles reappearing data. Coverage and successful removal are not guaranteed; public records and excluded regions or sites may remain.

When a paid service may save time

The FTC says paid services can submit opt-outs on a consumer’s behalf. A service can be useful if you have many profiles, lack time for repeated forms, or want ongoing monitoring. It does not change the underlying limits of opt-out law or public records.

Questions to ask before paying

  • How many people-search and other data-broker sites are actually covered?
  • Are the sites relevant to your country or state?
  • Will you receive a list of requests submitted and the outcome for each one?
  • How often does the service scan for new or reappearing listings?
  • Does it resubmit requests when a profile returns?
  • What identity information must you provide, and how is that information protected?
  • Can it address information you supplied directly to a broker, or only information obtained from public and third-party sources?
  • What happens when a broker claims an exemption or declines deletion?

What one provider says about its scope

Incogni’s help center, updated May 8, 2026, says the service removes data from approximately 100 people-search sites and sends requests for U.S. users. The provider says those specific people-search platforms generally do not cover residents of the European Union and other non-U.S. locations. These are the provider’s own scope statements, not an independent verification of performance.

Why independent evidence matters

A 2025 study by Jiahui He, Pete Snyder, Hamed Haddadi, Fabián E. Bustamante, and Gareth Tyson evaluated four commercial removal services through a user study and compared their coverage claims. In its abstract, the study reports that 48.2% of identified personally identifiable-information records that the services found were not successfully removed. Participants judged only 41.1% of the records identified by the services to be their own personal information. Those figures describe the study sample and the services measured; they are not a current performance score for every provider.

Troubleshooting common opt-out problems

The site says it cannot find you

Try a different name spelling, a former address, an old phone number, or another city associated with the profile. Search again after public records change. If no matching record exists, there is no listing to remove on that site, but another site may still have one.

The form asks for too much information

Stop before submitting. Determine which fields are mandatory, read the site’s privacy explanation, and decide whether the requested verification is proportionate to the request. Use a different official contact route if one is provided. Never send more information simply to make the form easier to complete.

The request is rejected or marked exempt

Save the status and the explanation. An exemption may mean that the broker is legally allowed to retain the record or that the record falls outside the program’s deletion rules. For California residents, DROP distinguishes an exempted record from a deleted record and from a record that is merely opted out of sale.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

The profile returns later

Record the new profile URL and submit another opt-out. The FTC warns that data can reappear when public records change. Also search reports for close relatives or associates, because your details may be displayed in someone else’s report.

You are concerned about stalking or domestic violence

Prioritize safety over speed. The FTC recognizes that people in these situations may not want strangers to locate their home or family. Avoid contacting a site from a device or account that could expose your location, and do not publish your tracking notes. Consider getting help from a qualified local safety or domestic-violence organization before making disclosures that could increase risk.

Build a maintenance routine

Removal is an ongoing privacy task rather than a one-time cleanup. After the first round, keep your confirmation records and set a private reminder to search the major people-search sites again periodically. When you move, change phone numbers, or notice a new public record, repeat the search using both current and former details.

Use separate entries for each site and each profile. Mark whether the result was deleted, opted out of sale, exempted, not found, or still pending. That distinction prevents you from assuming that a confirmation email means the underlying public record disappeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose manual requests if you want a free process, can submit forms yourself, and are willing to monitor for reappearance.
  • Use DROP if you are a California resident and want one request routed to participating registered brokers, while accepting its matching and exemption limits.
  • Evaluate a paid service if reducing manual workload is more important than cost. Require clear coverage, reporting, scan frequency, re-request handling, and data-protection explanations before subscribing.

Bottom line

Start with free, site-by-site opt-outs and keep proof of every request. California residents can add DROP for centralized requests to participating brokers. Paid services may reduce repetitive work, but coverage varies and neither a commercial service nor a government platform guarantees that every copy of your personal information will be deleted forever.
