The feature does not mean Netflix automatically detects that you have abandoned a title. The headline that popularized the idea dates to June 24, 2020; Netflix’s current instructions describe a removal control available across those devices.
What Netflix’s Continue Watching feature actually does
The removal control lets you tell Netflix not to keep a particular title in the Continue Watching row. It is a manual shelf-management tool, not evidence that Netflix has decided you will never finish a movie or series. The original June 24, 2020 report described an Android-first rollout, with iPhone support expected later and web availability uncertain at the time. Netflix’s current Help Center instructions now cover computers, TVs, Android, iPhone, and iPad.
The control’s label and placement can vary by device or interface language. Look for Remove from Row or Remove from Continue Watching.
Remove a title on your device
Computer
- Open Netflix in a web browser and select the profile where the title appears.
- Find the title in the Continue Watching row and hover over it.
- Select Remove from Row.
TV
- From Continue Watching, open the title’s details page.
- Open the available menu and choose Remove from Continue Watching, or the equivalent option shown on your screen.
Netflix documents the removal function, but the menu layout is not identical on every television or streaming-device interface.

Android, iPhone, and iPad
- Open the Netflix app and select the profile where the title appears.
- Find the title in Continue Watching and tap its Menu icon.
- Tap Remove from Row.
Netflix says Android users may need the latest version of the app for the direct control to appear.
If the removal option is missing
You can hide the title from the profile’s Viewing Activity instead. This is a broader change than removing a title from the row: Netflix says a hidden title no longer appears as watched on that profile and is no longer used as the basis for recommendations, unless you watch it again. Hiding it also removes it from Continue Watching.

- Open Netflix in a web browser.
- Go to the account page, then select Profiles.
- Choose the relevant profile and open Viewing Activity.
- Find the movie, episode, or series and select the hide icon beside it.
- If Netflix offers the option and you want to hide the whole show, choose the option to hide the series.
Netflix says the change can take up to 24 hours to reach all devices. Hiding titles from Viewing Activity is not available when that page is opened from a Kids profile. See Netflix’s Viewing Activity instructions.
Choose the control that matches what you want
- Use Remove from Row if you only want to tidy Continue Watching and preserve the profile’s viewing record and recommendation signals.
- Use Viewing Activity if the direct control is unavailable or you also want to remove the title from the profile’s watch history and recommendation basis.
Continue Watching and My List are separate. Continue Watching is for titles with unfinished playback; My List holds titles saved for later. Removing a title from Continue Watching does not, by itself, remove a separately saved title from My List.

Why a title may still appear
- Check the profile. Changes apply to the profile you edited, so make sure it is the one where the title appears.
- Check the row. The title may still be in My List or another part of Netflix rather than Continue Watching.
- Refresh the app or device. Reopen Netflix or switch profiles and switch back. Netflix also recommends signing out and back in when profile changes do not appear; see its profile-change refresh guidance.
- Update the mobile app. Netflix says the latest Android app may be needed for direct removal.
- Allow time for a history change to sync. A title hidden through Viewing Activity can take up to 24 hours to disappear across devices.
- Consider whether the title was played again. Another device or profile user may have resumed it. Check the correct profile and remove it again if needed.
A title disappearing from Netflix altogether is different from removing it from Continue Watching. Netflix says titles may leave when licensing agreements expire, and availability can vary by region. Its title availability guidance explains why catalog changes happen.

Removing a title from Continue Watching changes its appearance in that row; it does not delete the movie or show from Netflix’s catalog or cancel a subscription. Hiding a title from Viewing Activity has additional effects on the profile’s displayed watch history and recommendation signals. Use that route only if those changes are acceptable.
