Check Utah’s current air-quality forecast and particulate readings, close windows and doors, filter indoor air when your system allows it, and postpone unnecessary driving in strong winds. A well-fitting N95 can add protection for brief, unavoidable outdoor exposure, but it does not make prolonged outdoor activity safe.
What to do when a dust event is occurring
Use the current conditions—not the calendar—to decide how to act. Utah’s Great Salt Lake dust information and FAQ and its air-quality forecasting pages provide the most relevant local information. Look for the air-quality index (AQI), PM10 readings or forecasts, wind conditions, and any health advisory.
- Check conditions before going outside. A forecast of strong winds or elevated particle pollution is a reason to move exercise, outdoor work, errands, and children’s activities indoors or postpone them.
- Stay indoors as much as you can. Utah’s Division of Air Quality uses that wording because reducing the time and intensity of outdoor exposure is the primary control.
- Close the building envelope. Shut windows and exterior doors during the event. If your heating or cooling system has a recirculation setting, use it when appropriate so it is not continually drawing dusty outdoor air inside.
- Reduce driving in the worst conditions. Delay nonessential trips when winds are strong. If you must drive, be prepared for rapidly changing visibility and leave more time and distance than usual.
Dust episodes can be short. A brief event can still create high concentrations near a source or along a windy roadway, so a clear morning or a favorable forecast from the previous day does not guarantee clean air later.
What “Great Salt Lake dust” means—and when exposure happens
Great Salt Lake dust is particulate material from exposed soil and dry lakebed sediment that winds lift and carry through the air. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has emphasized that “Great Salt Lake dry sediment is not dust”: it becomes a dust exposure when wind entrains the material and people breathe or encounter the airborne particles.

Utah reports that windblown-dust events are common in spring and fall, with many occurring from March through May. Those are seasonal tendencies, not a safe-season rule. Strong winds can produce an event outside those months, and a spring day without wind may have no lake-related dust at all. Check the forecast and monitor readings each time conditions look threatening.
Exposure varies sharply by location. Communities near the lake, open shoreline, construction areas, unpaved surfaces, and major transport corridors can experience different concentrations during the same regional wind event. Indoor infiltration also depends on whether windows and doors are closed, the building’s leakage, and the operation of its ventilation system.
When am I being exposed to Great Salt Lake dust?
Exposure occurs when windborne particles are suspended in the air you breathe or settle on surfaces where they can be disturbed. The highest concern is during a period of strong wind, visible blowing dust, rising PM10 readings, or an official air-quality advisory. A plume can arrive after wind begins and can clear quickly when conditions change, so checking more than once during the day is useful.
Being indoors usually lowers exposure, but it does not create an automatic zero-exposure environment. Open windows, frequently used exterior doors, leaky construction, and ventilation that brings in outdoor air can allow particles inside. Conversely, a closed building with appropriate filtration can substantially reduce the amount of outdoor particle pollution entering occupied rooms. These are reasons to use the current AQI and PM10 information together with practical observations of wind and visibility.
Is the dust on the Wasatch Front actually from the Great Salt Lake?
Not every dusty day is a Great Salt Lake event. Desert soils, road and construction surfaces, quarries, and mine tailings can also contribute particles to Wasatch Front air. Source attribution matters because a monitor or a resident’s observation of haze cannot, by itself, identify which site supplied the material.
Utah DEQ’s public FAQ states that additional work is needed to connect potential metals in airborne lake dust with health effects in residents. That uncertainty is a reason to reduce particle exposure whenever air quality deteriorates; it is not a reason to assume that every particle came from the lake or that a single reading describes everyone’s exposure.
What recent monitoring shows
For the 2023–2025 period reported in Utah DEQ’s 2026 FAQ, four PM10 exceedances were recorded at three of seven monitoring stations near the Great Salt Lake. The station counts were:
| Monitoring station | PM10 exceedances, 2023–2025 |
|---|---|
| Hawthorne | 1 |
| Prison | 1 |
| Tech | 2 |
| Other four stations in the seven-station group | 0 reported in that period |
These are station-level measurements, not a count of all dust events or a personal-exposure estimate for every resident. Utah DEQ reports the EPA PM10 standard as 150 micrograms per cubic meter averaged over 24 hours. A station exceedance indicates that the measured concentration crossed that regulatory benchmark for the specified averaging period; it does not establish that every nearby household experienced the same concentration.

A 24-hour standard also should not be read as a promise that shorter peaks are harmless. A brief, intense plume can create difficult conditions near a source or roadway even if a later daily average is below the standard. Use the live forecast, wind information, and health advisories when deciding whether to go out.
For background on the standard, exceptional-event treatment, and the limits of current knowledge about dust metals, see Utah DEQ’s dust standards and metal-health-guidelines page.
Make indoor air the lower-exposure option
Close openings and limit outdoor-air intake
During elevated outdoor particle pollution, keep windows and exterior doors closed. Avoid propping a door open, and shorten the time an entrance remains open when people come and go. If your HVAC controls offer outdoor-air and recirculation settings, follow the equipment instructions and use recirculation when appropriate for the event. Do not disable required ventilation in a way that creates another safety problem; the objective is to avoid unnecessary intake of dusty outdoor air while maintaining a safe indoor environment.
Choose one room where household members spend most of their time and make it the clean-air room. Close its door when practical, keep the portable cleaner there if you use one, and avoid repeatedly opening windows to check outdoor conditions. Rely on official readings and forecasts instead of a single visual impression.
Use a portable air cleaner for occupied rooms
The EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home recommends considering a portable air cleaner for rooms where people spend time. Choose a unit intended for the room’s size and verify that replacement particle filters are available. A high-efficiency particle filter, commonly a HEPA-type filter, can reduce airborne particles when the cleaner is operated correctly.
- Place the cleaner in the room that is occupied most, rather than hiding it in an unused corner.
- Keep its intake and exhaust clear, and run it according to the manufacturer’s instructions during the dusty period.
- Use the room-coverage information supplied for that model; a small unit cannot clean an entire open-plan home at the same rate as a properly sized unit.
- Compare the stated room suitability, particle-filter type, and replacement-filter availability before buying. EPA does not endorse a particular model.
- Replace the filter on the schedule or condition specified by the manufacturer. A loaded filter can reduce airflow and cleaning performance.
Portable cleaners reduce indoor particle pollution; they do not remove every pollutant, seal a leaky building, or make outdoor exposure harmless. A cleaner is most useful when it is sized for the occupied room and run while the event is underway, not stored unused until after the air clears. EPA’s emergency indoor-air guidance explains additional steps for particle events at Emergencies and Indoor Air Quality.
Upgrade the central HVAC filter only when the system can handle it
EPA advises using MERV 13, or the highest-efficiency filter your furnace, heat pump, or air-handler fan and filter slot can accommodate. Do not install a MERV 13 filter solely because it is the recommended number if the equipment is not designed for it. Excessive resistance can reduce airflow, strain the system, or prevent the equipment from operating properly.
- Read the existing filter’s size and MERV rating.
- Check the equipment manual or ask a qualified HVAC professional what rating the fan and filter rack support.
- Install the highest compatible rating, ensuring the filter’s airflow arrow points toward the equipment.
- Inspect the filter after a dusty period and replace it when loaded or according to the service schedule.
A compatible filter works with the home’s existing air handler; it is not a substitute for closing windows and doors. The EPA home air-cleaner guide explains the relationship between filtration, airflow, and room use.

Which indoor measure should you choose?
| Measure | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Closed windows and doors | Immediate reduction of outdoor particle entry | Openings and building leakage can still admit air |
| Portable particle cleaner | Occupied rooms, especially where people spend the most time | Must match room coverage and does not remove every pollutant |
| Compatible HVAC filter | Whole-home circulation when the air handler can support it | Use MERV 13 or the highest rating the equipment can accommodate |
| N95 respirator | Brief, unavoidable outdoor exposure | Requires a close fit and does not make extended outdoor activity safe |
These measures work best together. Filtration cannot compensate for hours spent outdoors in a plume, and an N95 cannot correct hazardous driving visibility. Start with reducing exposure, then add equipment that fits the room, HVAC system, or face correctly.
If you must go outside
Consider a well-fitting N95 for brief, unavoidable exposure
Utah and EPA guidance support considering an N95 respirator when outdoor particle exposure cannot be avoided—for example, a short essential trip or urgent outdoor task. Its value depends on a close seal and correct use. Put it on before entering the dusty air, keep it over the nose and mouth, and follow the model’s instructions for positioning and straps. A damaged, wet, dirty, or poorly sealed respirator provides less protection.
An N95 is an added measure, not permission to remain outside, exercise in the dust, or continue a task for hours. The main control remains reducing time and physical activity outdoors. People who cannot obtain a reliable fit should not assume that a loose face covering offers equivalent protection. If wearing a respirator is difficult because of a medical condition, ask a healthcare professional about an advance plan rather than improvising during an event.
Plan for people at higher risk of problems
Utah DEQ identifies young people, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions as more likely to experience health problems from particulate exposure. Before a forecast dust event, those households can ask a clinician what precautions are appropriate, confirm access to prescribed medicines, and decide which indoor room has the cleanest air. Anyone whose exposure repeatedly affects breathing or another health condition should seek medical advice in advance rather than waiting for the next severe event.

Driving during windblown dust
Wind can move dust across a road quickly, producing sudden visibility changes even when conditions were clear at departure. Avoid driving during windy conditions when feasible. If a trip is essential, check the route and forecast immediately beforehand, keep the windshield and lights clean, slow down for changing visibility, and leave extra following distance. Do not stop in a travel lane or on a shoulder where you could be struck; use a safe location and follow law-enforcement or transportation-agency directions if visibility collapses.
Closing the vehicle’s windows and using the ventilation system’s recirculation setting can reduce the amount of outside air entering the cabin, but it does not eliminate risk from poor visibility or guarantee removal of all particles. The safest choice is still to postpone a nonessential trip until the wind and visibility improve.

Before the wind arrives
- Bookmark Utah DEQ’s Great Salt Lake dust FAQ and check the current AQI, PM10 readings, and forecast.
- Confirm that windows and exterior doors close tightly and identify the room where household members spend the most time.
- Check the HVAC filter’s rating, size, and replacement date; verify compatibility before buying a higher-MERV filter.
- If using a portable cleaner, confirm its room-coverage rating and keep a replacement filter available.
- People with respiratory conditions should discuss an advance plan with their healthcare professional.
- Decide which errands, exercise sessions, outdoor work, and travel can be postponed if wind or particle readings rise.
While conditions are dusty
- Move exercise, recreation, and nonessential work indoors.
- Keep windows and doors closed and use appropriate HVAC recirculation.
- Run the correctly sized portable cleaner in the occupied room and monitor the filter.
- Postpone nonessential driving; use an N95 only for brief, unavoidable outdoor exposure.
- Watch the official forecast for improvement rather than reopening the house based on a momentary lull.
- Recheck AQI, PM10, and wind conditions if someone must leave later in the day; morning conditions may not represent afternoon conditions.
After the event
When official conditions improve, ventilate and resume normal activities according to the forecast and your household’s needs. Inspect HVAC and portable-cleaner filters if the event was heavy. If anyone has persistent or worsening health effects after exposure, contact a healthcare professional. Reporting severe visibility or air-quality problems to the appropriate local authorities can also help document conditions, but an individual report cannot determine whether the material came from the lake, a desert surface, a quarry, or another source.
What is still uncertain about Great Salt Lake dust
Scientists and agencies are still working to distinguish lakebed dust from other regional sources and to determine how metal concentrations in airborne lake dust vary. Utah DEQ says the health effects of those potential metals and the link to residents’ health require additional research. That evidence limit should shape the wording of any health claim: current guidance supports reducing exposure to particulate pollution, but it does not establish that every dust plume has the same chemical composition or health risk.

The practical response does not depend on proving the source in real time. When wind and particle readings indicate degraded air, use the same protective hierarchy: reduce outdoor time and exertion, close the home, filter indoor air with compatible equipment, and use a properly fitted N95 only when a short outdoor task cannot be avoided.
Frequently Asked Questions
When am I being exposed to Great Salt Lake dust?
Exposure is most likely when strong winds lift material from exposed soil or dry lakebed sediment and PM10 or AQI readings rise. Check Utah’s current forecast and readings during the day because events can be brief and conditions can change quickly.
Am I being exposed to Great Salt Lake dust every time I see haze?
No. Desert soils, construction and road surfaces, quarries, and mine tailings also contribute dust on the Wasatch Front. Haze or a monitor reading alone cannot identify the source.
What is the first thing I should do during an event?
Check current Utah air-quality information, then stay indoors as much as possible. Close windows and exterior doors, use appropriate HVAC recirculation, and postpone unnecessary outdoor activity and driving.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is an N95 necessary if I have to go outside?
It is an optional added measure for brief, unavoidable exposure. A well-fitting N95 must seal correctly and does not make prolonged outdoor work, exercise, or travel safe.
Can I install a MERV 13 filter in any furnace?
No. Use MERV 13 or the highest-efficiency filter the furnace, heat pump, fan, and filter slot can accommodate. Check the equipment instructions or ask an HVAC professional first.
Will a portable air cleaner remove all Great Salt Lake dust?
No. A correctly sized particle cleaner can reduce indoor particle pollution, but it cannot remove every pollutant, prevent outdoor exposure, or replace closing windows and doors.
Does a PM10 exceedance mean my home had the same exposure as the monitor?
No. Utah DEQ’s 2023–2025 results were measurements at seven stations, with four exceedances at Hawthorne, Prison, and Tech. A station result is not a personal-exposure estimate for every nearby household.
Who should make an advance plan?
Utah DEQ identifies young people, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions as more likely to experience problems from particulate exposure. They should ask a healthcare professional about precautions before an expected event.
The Bottom Line
Check Utah’s current AQI, PM10 readings, wind forecast, and advisories; then stay indoors, close windows and doors, and postpone unnecessary driving. Use a properly sized portable cleaner or the highest HVAC filter your system can handle, and consider a well-fitting N95 only for brief, unavoidable outdoor exposure. Because Wasatch Front dust can come from several sources and the health effects of potential lake-dust metals remain under study, reducing particle exposure is the most reliable practical response.
