To reduce CPU use, first confirm OBS is looping the lesson correctly, then identify whether software encoding, scene rendering, media decoding, or another application is the actual bottleneck. If OBS is using x264, test a compatible hardware encoder; remove unnecessary scene sources and filters; and lower output resolution or frame rate only if needed. Compare OBS Stats and system utilization after changing one setting at a time—there is no reliable percentage reduction to promise without your computer’s specifications and a measured baseline.
Set up the loop before troubleshooting performance
OBS can repeat recorded material using built-in sources; a separate paid loop utility or playback device is not inherently required.
One lesson file: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lesson.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the lesson file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Apply the settings and watch through the file’s end to confirm it starts again.
OBS documents Media Source looping in its Media Sources guide.
Several files: VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In Sources, select + and add a VLC Video source.
- Add the lesson files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- Test the transition from the final playlist item back to the first.
OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source. See the OBS Media Sources guide for supported source options and setup details. If one file is enough, Media Source avoids the need to install VLC.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find which part of OBS is using resources
CPU use is not determined by looping alone. Playback may involve media decoding; OBS also composites and renders the scene, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube. Other applications can consume CPU as well. Record a baseline before changing settings so you can tell which change helped.
- Open OBS Stats from the View menu and note rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames.
- Note the selected encoder, output resolution, frame rate, active scene sources, and filters.
- Check system utilization and identify whether OBS or another process is responsible for high CPU use.
- Change one setting at a time, then compare the same readings while the lesson is playing.
OBS says performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains why a single CPU recommendation does not fit every setup.
Test a hardware encoder if OBS is using x264
x264 encodes in software on the CPU. If your computer exposes a compatible hardware encoder, test it in OBS under Settings > Output, where the available encoder options depend on the installed OBS version, operating system, and hardware. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, with compatibility varying by platform and hardware generation.

Hardware encoding can move encoding work away from the CPU, but it does not eliminate scene rendering, media decoding, or the work of other applications. Compare CPU use, OBS Stats, and the resulting picture at your intended output settings. Earlier hardware-encoder generations can also trade visual quality at a given bitrate; use OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide to check the qualifications for your platform and generation.

Simplify the scene
- Remove sources that are not needed for the lesson stream.
- Disable or remove unused filters and avoid unnecessary browser sources or animated elements.
- Use lesson files close to the intended stream resolution when practical. Decoding an unnecessarily large 4K source for a smaller output can add avoidable work.
Lower resolution or frame rate only when appropriate
In Settings > Video, test a lower output resolution or frame rate if the machine remains overloaded. OBS recommends reducing 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. A lower resolution can reduce detail; a lower frame rate can make motion less smooth. For a mostly static recorded lesson, 30 fps may be sufficient, but choose based on the material and learner experience.
Rendering and encoding are distinct from CPU use: a GPU can be overloaded even when CPU readings do not look extreme. Compare OBS Stats and system utilization after each adjustment rather than assuming any one change will address every bottleneck. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide covers scene complexity and output settings.

Match YouTube delivery settings to your output
Bitrate is the outgoing data rate, not a direct CPU control. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, scene work, and source decoding are more relevant to OBS compute load. Still, the stream must use settings that the encoder and your reliable upload capacity can sustain.
| Output and codec | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
These are Google/YouTube Help recommendations on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026—not guarantees for a particular connection or encoder. Choose the row for your output and codec. YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval; its instruction is “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Set the keyframe interval in the encoder options, and verify which controls are exposed by your chosen encoder. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Before an unattended stream, test privately or unlisted and check stream health and any messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm playback, sound, the repeat or playlist transition, and encoder stability. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

Validate an unattended 24/7 setup
A short successful test does not establish that a particular computer will remain stable indefinitely. Run a representative extended test and check OBS Stats, YouTube stream health, lesson playback, reconnect behavior, and computer thermals. If you change a setting, test again before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Plan archive handling separately from the live loop. Google/YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one 24-hour encoder session will produce a single complete archive, so check current Live Control Room behavior and plan sessions around the archive you need. See YouTube’s guidance for creating a live stream with an encoder.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| CPU stays high while the lesson plays | Check whether OBS uses x264, then test a compatible hardware encoder. Also check scene sources, filters, media resolution, and other running applications. |
| OBS reports rendering lag | Remove unnecessary sources or filters and check output resolution and frame rate. Rendering pressure may involve the GPU rather than the CPU. |
| OBS reports encoding lag | Check the selected encoder and output settings. Test a compatible hardware encoder or lower resolution/frame rate, then compare Stats again. |
| Stream health is poor or frames are dropped | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, upload reliability, bitrate, codec, and encoder settings. A bitrate recommendation cannot guarantee the connection can sustain it. |
| Playlist does not repeat or a source fails | Confirm the correct Loop or Loop Playlist setting. For VLC Video, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
When should you upgrade the computer?
Do not buy a GPU or other hardware based on CPU use alone. First record the computer’s processor and GPU, operating system, OBS version, current encoder, output resolution and frame rate, active sources, and OBS Stats during a representative test. If software encoding is demonstrably the bottleneck and the computer lacks a suitable hardware encoder, an upgrade may be worth evaluating; without those details, naming a specific purchase would be guesswork.
