For a single feed, right-size the encoder, avoid unnecessary transcoding, choose an appropriate output quality, and price the actual always-on setup in your chosen region. Do not use a viewer-delivery estimate as the monthly cost of an encoder VM.
Start by identifying what the cloud server does
A server that encodes a playlist and sends one live feed to YouTube has a different job from a streaming stack that packages video and delivers it directly to viewers. Those are different architectures with different cost components; a price for the larger stack is not a valid estimate for a single feed to YouTube.
- Single-feed encoder: compute for encoding, any required storage or restart tooling, and applicable network charges. YouTube receives the stream and transcodes it into viewer formats.
- Packaging and viewer delivery: may add encoding, packaging, and distribution costs. Include these only if your architecture actually uses them.
Before changing settings, write down the components in your current setup. If you only need to send a playlist to YouTube, do not pay for components whose purpose is serving viewers independently.
Reduce the work your encoder has to do
Choose an output quality that fits the material
Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Avoid selecting a higher resolution or bitrate than your source material and audience need. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live input, up to 60 fps; its encoder guidance lists CBR as the bitrate mode and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the current table and settings at YouTube’s live encoder settings, since guidance can change.

Do not create viewer renditions without a reason
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes an incoming live stream into formats for viewers. Unless your workflow has a specific requirement for pre-ingest variants, avoid running extra transcodes or generating multiple renditions before sending the feed. That can add compute work without replacing YouTube’s own viewer-format processing.
Use the appropriate ingest protocol
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Its RTMPS guide describes the required protocol, endpoint, stream path, and port 443; check those values in the current documentation and use the endpoint and key shown for your live control room. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

HLS ingestion is a separate option for workflows that need it: it requires a conforming media playlist and segments, and a single encoded stream at the highest resolution you intend to serve. YouTube notes that HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Do not add HLS packaging to a simple RTMPS workflow without a concrete reason. Build a realistic always-on cost estimate
There is no reliable generic monthly figure for a VM continuously encoding and sending one playlist feed to YouTube. A meaningful estimate depends on the provider, region, instance or encoder type, output bitrate, operating schedule, and the provider’s current network-billing terms.

- Compute or managed encoding used for the continuous workload.
- Storage for source files and any working files the workflow requires.
- Network transfer, checking the provider’s billing rule, region, and destination.
- Monitoring, restart tooling, or other operational components you actually use.
- Packaging or viewer distribution only when your system really performs those functions.
Use the provider’s current pricing calculator or pricing page for the specific region and configuration. Continuous use can make a small hourly difference material over a billing period, so estimate the actual schedule rather than assuming a short test’s cost represents an always-on stream.
Keep published examples in scope
AWS publishes an illustrative estimate of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event serving approximately 1,000 viewers at SD-540p: about $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution in US East (N. Virginia). The year is not stated in the retrieved page, and AWS says the estimate depends on the solution revision and region. This is an example of a viewer-distribution workload, not the cost of a monthly VM that sends one feed to YouTube. Recheck current details at AWS Live Streaming on AWS before using it in a comparison.

- Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval in your encoder using YouTube’s current guidance.
- Use the correct RTMPS endpoint, path, and port with the stream key for the intended YouTube broadcast.
- Run a representative test with the actual audio and motion in the playlist. Confirm that the stream is stable and that YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Review the server’s compute use and provider billing assumptions under continuous operation before committing to the configuration.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; its encoder settings page is the reference for current input guidance: YouTube live encoder settings.

Troubleshoot cost and stream problems
- Compute remains high: check whether the encoder is doing an unnecessary transcode or producing a higher resolution or frame rate than needed. Test a suitable lower output setting against YouTube’s current recommendations.
- The bill is much higher than the VM estimate: check whether the estimate omitted network transfer, storage, monitoring, managed encoding, packaging, or viewer delivery. Confirm the selected region and billing terms with the provider.
- A quoted streaming price seems unrelated: check whether it covers one feed to YouTube or a stack that also distributes to viewers. Do not compare those scopes as if they were the same service.
- YouTube does not accept the incoming feed: verify RTMPS is selected, and check the endpoint, stream path, port 443, and stream key against the current YouTube live setup.
- The feed connects but stream health is poor: test the bitrate and output settings against YouTube’s resolution-specific guidance, then monitor a representative stream before making the lower-cost setting permanent.
