To get closer to the live action on a TV or streaming device, start the live program, open the three-dot More menu, choose Broadcast Delay, then select Decrease. YouTube TV says this reduces the player’s buffer to help limit spoilers—but the smaller buffer can make playback more prone to interruptions. YouTube TV’s instructions and troubleshooting advice explain the trade-off.
Change the Broadcast Delay setting
- Open the YouTube TV app on your television or connected streaming device.
- Start the live channel or event you want to watch.
- Bring up the playback controls and open the three-dot More menu.
- Select Broadcast Delay.
- Choose Decrease. Depending on the device or app rollout, the option may have a time-limited label, such as Decrease for 48 hours. Follow the wording shown on your screen.
The change is most useful just before a spoiler-sensitive event: a game, breaking news, an awards show, or another live broadcast where a few seconds can matter. If the stream becomes unreliable, return to the same menu and choose Default.
What Decrease changes—and what it cannot
Broadcast delay is the time between an event being captured and appearing on your screen. YouTube TV’s setting changes the playback buffer: Decrease uses less buffer to bring playback closer to the live edge, while Default uses more buffer to help minimize interruptions. YouTube TV cautions that less buffer can mean more playback interruptions.
That is not the same as making the entire delivery chain instant. A channel or broadcaster may add delay before YouTube TV receives its feed; the service then encodes and delivers it over the internet; your home network and device also affect playback. Decrease cannot remove every source of latency or guarantee that you will be in sync with someone watching over an antenna, cable, or another streaming service. There is no single reliable number of seconds that applies to every channel, event, device, and connection.

It is also different from buffering in the everyday sense. Buffering is a pause or reload when playback cannot keep up. Network latency is the time data takes to travel. And if you paused, rewound, or fell behind after an interruption, you may simply be watching an earlier point in the program. Use the player’s live control to return to the current live position; changing Broadcast Delay does not itself skip ahead from a delayed playback position.

Choose based on what matters more for that event: getting closer to live or keeping playback steady. The setting is not a general speed-up for on-demand shows or recordings.

If the stream starts buffering after you choose Decrease
Try these steps to improve connection consistency. They can help playback stay stable, but they do not guarantee a lower underlying broadcast delay:

- Use Ethernet if practical. A wired connection can avoid weak or congested Wi-Fi, though it cannot remove delay already introduced by the broadcaster or streaming pipeline.
- Improve Wi-Fi reception. Move the streaming device closer to the router. If both support it, try a less congested 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and other heavy network activity during the event.
- Restart equipment if the issue is new. Restart the YouTube TV app, streaming device, and router.
- Install updates. Check for updates to the YouTube TV app, device operating system, and router firmware.
- Compare another app or device. If other apps also struggle, the issue may involve the device or network. If only one device has trouble, its software, Wi-Fi reception, or performance may be the cause.
- Switch back to Default if needed. A smoother stream is better than missing part of the event. YouTube TV notes that congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and other network conditions can affect live playback even when a connection seems fast.
A faster broadband plan by itself is not a guaranteed fix for broadcast delay. Likewise, a new streaming device may improve app performance or connection stability, but there is no basis for assuming it will eliminate YouTube TV’s live-feed latency.

Prevent spoilers outside the video player
The delay setting cannot silence everything else that knows the score. Before the event, consider muting group chats, sports-app alerts, phone and smartwatch notifications, and social-media feeds. Ask friends who are watching ahead not to send updates.
Be careful with YouTube TV’s sports features, too. Its sports views can include scores, statistics, and key plays; those can give away the action even if you have reduced the broadcast delay. Would recording the event help?
YouTube TV offers unlimited cloud DVR storage, so you can add a program or event to your library and watch it from a chosen point. Recording can suit viewers who want to start late, pause, or skip ahead through parts of a program; it does not put you closer to live. If your goal is to see the action as close to real time as possible, use Decrease instead. See YouTube TV’s recording and playback help for supported options.
Could an antenna be closer to live?
For a local broadcast channel, an over-the-air antenna may offer a lower-latency path than internet streaming, but it depends on your location, reception, local affiliate, event, television, and the feed you are comparing it with. There is no dependable universal seconds-ahead figure. Check which local channels you can receive and whether your home gets a usable signal before relying on an antenna.

An antenna is a complement, not a full YouTube TV replacement: it generally will not provide cable networks, regional sports networks, or YouTube TV’s cloud DVR, and it cannot receive channels unavailable over the air in your area.
If Broadcast Delay is missing
YouTube TV’s published instructions describe the control in the TV playback interface; do not assume the same option appears on every phone, tablet, computer, or casting interface. If you cannot find it:
- Confirm you are watching a live channel or event, not an on-demand program or recording.
- Update the YouTube TV app and your device software, then restart the app and reopen the live channel.
- Look again in the playback controls’ three-dot More menu. Labels and availability can vary by device or rollout.
- If possible, try the control on a supported TV or streaming device rather than expecting identical menus on every platform.
If the option remains unavailable on a TV, consult YouTube TV’s current troubleshooting page for device-specific guidance.
