First check whether YouTube saved an archive, then look for the encoder’s separate local recording. Either copy may have survived even if the other did not. If you want to resume broadcasting, verify the event, stream key, preview, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before restarting—but YouTube does not document that a restarted feed will rejoin the same event or repair its archive.
Check for a YouTube archive and a local recording
Treat these as two separate recovery paths. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. An archive is possible, not guaranteed. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup (Archive live streams).
- Check YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Content, then the Live tab. Find the ended event and see whether an archive is listed and playable. YouTube’s Live tab includes previous, current, and upcoming streams; archive visibility can be changed there. Avoid deleting or replacing the event while you check it.
- Check the encoder’s recording destination. Look in the folder or other destination configured in the encoder. A local recording is independent of the YouTube archive, so one can exist without the other.
- Test each file. Open and play it, note the last intact timestamp, and check whether both picture and sound are complete. Keep a recovered local file as its own copy. You can edit or upload it later if you have the rights, but do not assume it can be merged into the interrupted YouTube archive.
YouTube recommends verifying the integrity of local archive files and checking that the file grows while streaming (YouTube live streaming tips — Computer; Streaming tips). If you did not configure a local recording and no YouTube archive exists, there may be no saved copy to recover.
Can you restart the same YouTube Live event?
A restart may get a feed sending again, but YouTube’s published guidance does not promise that a feed restarted after a power cut will continue the same live event, keep its watch page active, or combine separate segments. Those outcomes are not established, and the available options may depend on the encoder and the event’s current state. Do not treat restarting as a way to repair the original archive.

Before sending the encoder feed again
- Open the relevant event in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm which event and stream details are selected.
- In the encoder, verify the stream URL and key against the current details in Live Control Room. If the encoder reports a stream-key or start error, YouTube advises copying the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that video and audio are present before you treat the restart as successful.
- If the event cannot be resumed in its current state, use the event and encoder options available to you to start a new broadcast. Do not promise viewers that it will use the same watch page or join the old archive.
Diagnose the cause before you go live again
Separate an encoder-output problem from an outbound connection problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the incoming video and audio quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive when the output itself looks or sounds bad. If encoder output looks healthy, investigate the connection carrying it to YouTube (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; Streaming tips).
- No picture or sound in preview: Check source selection and routing in the encoder, then its error messages and CPU load.
- Encoder output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving it reliably: Check the outbound connection and contact your internet service provider if needed.
- Stream key error: Copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder rather than relying on an old saved key.
What DVR can—and cannot—recover
YouTube’s DVR lets viewers pause or rewind while a stream is live, subject to limits; it is especially relevant to streams longer than 12 hours. It is not a creator’s archive and does not replace a local recording (Turn on DVR on live streams).

Prevent the next power-cut loss
- Record locally as well as streaming. Before going live, set a local archive destination and confirm it has enough available space. Verify that the file opens and that its size grows during the broadcast.
- Test recovery and failover. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, and monitoring the stream (YouTube live streaming tips — Computer; Streaming tips). A test helps expose weak points before an actual outage.
- Keep the local file separate. Retain a verified copy on storage you can access if the encoder computer fails. A backup can preserve footage that was recorded; it cannot recreate footage that was never saved.
