How to Fix FFmpeg “Invalid DTS” Errors in a YouTube Live Playlist

An FFmpeg “Invalid DTS” warning is about packet timestamp ordering—not necessarily a failed YouTube stream. Identify whether FFmpeg is reading or generating HLS, then inspect segment boundaries and timestamp options before testing a fix.

FFmpeg’s “Invalid DTS” warning is a timestamp-ordering problem, not proof that YouTube rejected your stream. The right fix depends on whether FFmpeg is reading a playlist or segments, creating HLS output, or pushing an HLS stream to YouTube—and on whether the command preserves timestamps with -copyts. First identify where the warning occurs, then test timestamp handling against a short sample before changing a live workflow.

What “Invalid DTS” means

DTS (decoding timestamp) tells a decoder when to process a packet; PTS (presentation timestamp) indicates when to display or play it. In FFmpeg 9.0 muxer source, the log Invalid DTS: … PTS: …, replacing by guess is emitted when a packet’s DTS is later than its PTS and FFmpeg substitutes a guessed timestamp. FFmpeg also handles non-monotonic DTS by adjusting timestamps in ordinary operation, with a warning that the output timestamps may be incorrect. That warning may affect timing or synchronization, but by itself it does not establish that output failed. FFmpeg 9.0 muxer source

Do not treat this mux-side warning as synonymous with a YouTube HLS ingest rejection. Establish whether it appears while FFmpeg is reading input or writing output, and check stream health and playback separately.

Identify the workflow before changing options

“YouTube Live playlist” can describe different directions of flow. The timestamp remedy for an input playlist is not automatically the remedy for HLS that FFmpeg generates for YouTube.

Workflow What to establish What the warning can tell you
Reading an HLS manifest or local TS segments Which playlist and segments FFmpeg is demuxing; whether timestamps reset at segment boundaries Inspect input timing and FFmpeg’s timestamp policy before changing output settings.
Creating HLS output Output container and segmenting options; whether the segment sequence has a real discontinuity Check mux-side timestamp handling and whether a discontinuity should be signaled.
Pushing HLS to YouTube Whether FFmpeg is producing the ingest playlist and segments, plus YouTube’s format requirements Validate timestamp correctness and ingest compliance as separate checks.

Also note whether the command uses stream copy (-c copy) or decodes and re-encodes. The exact root cause cannot be determined without the command, FFmpeg version, surrounding log lines, playlist, and segment timing data.

Diagnose the warning step by step

  1. Capture enough context. Save the complete FFmpeg command, the output of ffmpeg -version, and the lines immediately before and after the warning. Record whether the input is an HLS manifest, local TS segments, or another container or protocol.
  2. Mark the direction of flow. Determine whether FFmpeg is ingesting a playlist, generating one, or pushing HLS to YouTube. These are distinct operations; a YouTube ingest problem is not necessarily the cause of an FFmpeg muxer warning.
  3. Locate the warning in the pipeline. Determine whether it occurs during demuxing or muxing. The “Invalid DTS” behavior described in FFmpeg 9.0’s muxer source is a mux-side timestamp fixup, so do not infer that YouTube has rejected the playlist solely from that message. FFmpeg 9.0 muxer source
  4. Inspect the input and segment boundaries. Check the playlist and adjacent segments for timestamp resets or discontinuities. Use FFprobe to examine packet timing and compare the end of one segment with the start of the next; look for DTS values that move backwards or restart unexpectedly.
  5. Review timestamp options in context. Check for -copyts, -start_at_zero, -copytb, and any discontinuity-related options. If preserving original timestamps was not intentional, removing -copyts is a reasonable baseline experiment—not a universal fix.
  6. Test on a short sample. Keep the original input and compare a controlled run with the relevant option changed. Review fresh logs, then verify audio/video synchronization and playback before applying a change to the full live workflow.

Check -copyts and discontinuity correction

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation says -dts_delta_threshold corrects timestamp discontinuities for formats that accept them, including MPEG-TS and HLS. Its documented default threshold is 10 seconds. The documentation also says that -copyts disables this automatic correction, except when timestamp wrapping is detected. Because this behavior depends on the input format and option combination, do not add -copyts as a generic repair; it preserves timestamps and can prevent the normal discontinuity correction that might otherwise apply. Use the threshold only after confirming that the input format supports discontinuity correction and that the observed timestamp jump is the problem. The documented default is not a recommended value for every stream. FFmpeg option behavior is version-sensitive; the cited command-line documentation mirror does not specify a version.

If FFmpeg is producing HLS for YouTube

YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements are independent of whether packet DTS values are valid. Its guidance requires MPEG-TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte-range mode, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Satisfying those requirements does not prove that timestamps are correct; validate the stream’s packet timing separately. YouTube Help: HLS ingest

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. These are encoder and stream settings, not a direct repair for invalid DTS. Test the resulting stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube Help: encoder settings and live stream requirements

When a playlist discontinuity marker is appropriate

FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can insert #EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY before the first segment’s information. Consider it when the segment sequence has an actual discontinuity and your playlist-generation flow supports signaling it. The option’s existence does not establish that it repairs invalid packet DTS or makes an otherwise broken timestamp sequence valid. FFmpeg formats documentation

Common symptoms and what to check

  • The warning appears, but playback works. Check fresh logs and listen or watch for synchronization problems. FFmpeg may have adjusted timestamps; the warning alone does not prove that the stream failed.
  • The warning begins at a segment boundary. Compare packet timestamps in adjacent segments and check whether timestamps reset or the playlist marks a genuine discontinuity.
  • The warning appears after adding -copyts. Test without it if timestamp preservation was not required. For supported formats, it disables normal discontinuity correction except when timestamp wrapping is detected.
  • YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue. Check HLS segment duration, rolling playlist length, byte-range use, and HTTPS POST/PUT separately from DTS. A compliant playlist can still have bad packet timestamps.
  • The warning remains after changing an option. Recheck whether the warning is emitted on input or output and whether the changed option applies to that format and FFmpeg version. Do not stack timestamp flags without a specific diagnosis.
