To save a Twitch livestream as a video on demand (VOD), turn on Store Past Broadcasts in Twitch’s Stream Settings before you go live. After the stream, confirm the VOD appears in Video Producer, then download it or export it to YouTube if you want a copy beyond Twitch’s retention window. Twitch does not save broadcasts retroactively when the setting was off.
Turn on Twitch’s VOD archive before streaming

Open your Twitch Stream Settings.

Enable Store Past Broadcasts. Twitch says this option is not on by default.

Confirm the setting is enabled before starting your broadcast. It applies to future streams; it will not create a VOD for a broadcast that was not saved.
Twitch calls saved past broadcasts VODs: recordings of past live streams that are available for viewers to watch. See Twitch’s On-Demand Content on Twitch help page for the current instructions and policy.

Find and check the recording after the stream

In Twitch, open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.

Look for the completed broadcast and open it to confirm that the recording is present and plays.

If it is missing, check whether Store Past Broadcasts was enabled and whether your connection or stream configuration was unstable or incorrect. Twitch notes that these problems can prevent a broadcast from saving. Check stream health with Twitch Inspector, then consult Twitch Help if needed.
If a broadcast was never saved, it may not exist on Twitch’s servers and cannot be recovered through the normal creator workflow. Checking Video Producer after each stream catches a failed save while you can still investigate it.

How long Twitch keeps a VOD
Twitch’s published retention periods depend on account category. These are Twitch policy periods, not a promise of permanent storage; check the current Twitch VOD policy because platform rules can change.

Keep a copy beyond Twitch’s retention period
Twitch provides two ways to preserve a VOD outside its time-limited archive: download it to local storage, or connect your Twitch and YouTube accounts and export it directly to YouTube. Twitch describes these options in its VOD help page.

For a local copy, use the download option in Video Producer and choose a destination with enough free space. For YouTube, connect the accounts and follow Twitch’s export prompts. After either transfer, verify that the destination copy is present and playable before relying on it as your only archive.

A saved VOD is not proof that every part of the recording is cleared for reuse. Twitch says creators are responsible for ensuring their streams and recorded videos do not infringe someone else’s copyright. Review music, game audio, clips, images, and other third-party material before making a VOD public or moving it to another platform. Platform muting or detection is not permission to use copyrighted material. Copyright rules depend on the material and circumstances; when in doubt, obtain permission or leave it out.

YouTube says it scans archived live streams for third-party content after the broadcast ends, and a Content ID claim may be applied then. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before exporting content there.
