To retry a YouTube stream after a temporary RTMP output failure, send FFmpeg’s output through its FIFO muxer and enable -attempt_recovery 1. This can recover the connection while the FFmpeg process remains alive; it will not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and it cannot recover content missed during an outage.
Configure FFmpeg to retry a temporary output failure
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer supports recovery attempts for temporary output failures, including network outages. The documented example is:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is a documentation example, not a tested command for every input, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account. Replace INPUT and the example destination with your actual source and YouTube ingestion URL plus stream key. Keep the stream key private: do not put it in a public script, log, or support post.
What the options do
-f fifoselects the FIFO muxer for the output;-fifo_format flvsets the underlying format used for RTMP-style delivery.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover the output after a failure.-recovery_wait_time 1sets a one-second wait between unsuccessful attempts. FFmpeg’s example describes retries continuing every second indefinitely.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets real-time processing continue by dropping packets if the FIFO queue overflows. It does not restore audio or video missed during an interruption.-map 0:v -map 0:amaps video and audio streams from the input. Change the mappings to match the streams your input actually contains.
The example’s -re and encoding arguments provide context; they are not universal requirements for every live input. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and its FIFO options for the recovery behavior and option details.

Know which failure this handles
FIFO recovery applies when the FFmpeg process is still running but its output encounters a temporary failure. It is different from commonly encountered -reconnect flags for HTTP input protocols: those concern input connections, not recovery of a publishing output. The FIFO options do not guarantee a gapless stream or that YouTube will keep a live event active through every interruption.
If FFmpeg exits
If FFmpeg terminates with an error, FIFO recovery cannot relaunch it. Use an external service manager or restart loop to start a new process, with suitable backoff and logging for your operating system. YouTube’s official guidance does not guarantee that a live event will resume after a process restart, so check the event in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a restarted encoder has rejoined it.

Check YouTube’s RTMPS settings and stream health
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted RTMP connection. Use the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, port 443, and TLS with SNI set to the server hostname. An incorrect endpoint, port, or SNI—or using cleartext RTMP when RTMPS is expected—can lead to SSL errors or timeouts. Follow the current YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide for endpoint and connection requirements.
Also check the encoder and network settings. YouTube recommends a quality that your connection can sustain, testing upload bitrate, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its encoder settings guidance covers supported protocols and codecs, bitrate ranges, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). These settings help make a valid, sustainable stream; they do not configure FFmpeg to reconnect.

Troubleshoot reconnect attempts
- FFmpeg exits instead of retrying: FIFO recovery works only inside a running process. Check the error and logs, then configure an external supervisor or restart loop if process restarts are needed.
- Retries continue but the stream does not return: confirm the YouTube ingestion endpoint, application path, stream key, RTMPS scheme, port 443, and TLS SNI. A retry cannot correct an invalid destination or credentials.
- You see SSL errors or timeouts: verify the endpoint, port, and SNI against YouTube’s RTMPS guide; make sure you are not using cleartext RTMP where RTMPS is expected.
- The broadcast resumes with missing content or discontinuity: recovery does not recreate packets lost during the interruption. Dropping packets on queue overflow keeps real-time processing moving at the cost of those packets.
- The connection repeatedly fails under load: test upload capacity, select a quality your connection can sustain, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Recovery attempts do not increase available bandwidth.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are publishing uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process and restart setup at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
