How to Recognize the Warning Signs of a Romance Scam

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A romance scam usually follows a recognizable pattern: someone met on a dating site or social network quickly moves the conversation into private messages, builds an intense relationship without meeting in person, and eventually asks for money, cryptocurrency, gifts, an investment transfer, or sensitive information. One behavior alone does not prove fraud. The combination of secrecy, identity inconsistencies, repeated excuses for not meeting, and financial pressure should make you stop, verify independently, and involve someone you trust.

What a romance scam looks like

Romance scammers use emotional trust as their access point. They may copy photographs and personal details from a real person, invent a job that keeps them overseas, or present themselves as unusually successful and interested in you. The relationship can feel genuine because the scammer communicates frequently, remembers personal details, and creates a sense of exclusivity.

The typical progression described by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) starts on a dating platform or social network. The new contact urges you to move to text, email, or another messaging service. Messages become frequent and intimate, but an in-person meeting never happens. The person gives a reason—military deployment, work travel, an immigration problem, illness, distance, or a canceled flight—and later asks for financial help or directs you toward an investment.

The concern is the pattern, not a single trait. Long-distance work, reluctance to video chat, or using another messaging app can have innocent explanations. They become dangerous when combined with isolation from friends, inconsistent identity details, urgency, or requests for money.

The warning signs to check first

They want to leave the dating or social platform immediately

A new contact may insist that you communicate by text, email, an encrypted messenger, or a private social account. Moving a conversation is not proof of a scam, but doing so quickly removes the platform’s moderation, reporting tools, and record of the interaction. It also makes it harder for friends or relatives to see the account and for investigators to connect related profiles.

Keep early conversations on the original platform. You can exchange contact information later, after the person’s identity and intentions have had time to establish themselves. Be especially cautious if the person treats staying on-platform as an insult, says the platform is unsafe, or claims that privacy is needed before you know each other.

They create intense intimacy or urgency

Scammers often communicate throughout the day, use pet names quickly, describe a future together, or say you are the only person who understands them. That emotional investment can be built for weeks or months before a request appears. A sudden crisis then creates pressure to act before you can ask questions: a hospital bill, a stolen passport, bail, customs charges, a plane ticket, or a visa fee.

Urgency is a control tactic. A legitimate partner will accept your need to verify a story and discuss it with someone else. A scammer may insist that delay will cause serious harm, accuse you of not caring, or promise repayment after a contract, inheritance, or paycheck arrives.

They cannot meet in person despite regular contact

Repeated postponements are more significant than one canceled plan. The person may claim to be working on an offshore project, serving in the military, traveling for a company, or living in a location that makes visits impossible. They might agree to a date and then produce a new emergency just before it happens.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

A refusal to meet or video chat is not conclusive by itself; people have legitimate safety, disability, privacy, or scheduling concerns. Treat it as a warning when the explanation changes, the person will not accept a reasonable alternative such as a brief live video call, or every proposed meeting ends with a financial problem.

They ask for money, gifts, or personal information

Do not send money or gifts to an online love interest you have not met in person. Requests may involve:

  • a plane ticket, hotel, or travel document;
  • medical treatment, an accident, legal fees, bail, or customs charges;
  • rent, debt, a business opportunity, or a supposedly temporary loan;
  • gift cards, wire transfers, payment-app transfers, or cryptocurrency;
  • your Social Security number, passport, driver’s-license image, bank details, account passwords, or one-time security codes.

Sharing identifying or financial information can enable account takeover, identity theft, or additional fraud even when no payment is made. A request framed as a favor is still a financial request. Never let embarrassment or the length of the relationship substitute for independent verification.

They present an easy or insider investment

Some romance scams are investment scams from the beginning. The person boasts about exceptional cryptocurrency or foreign-exchange profits, says a relative or trading contact taught them a secret strategy, or offers to guide you personally. They may direct you to a particular website or app that only accepts cryptocurrency, tell you to send funds to a wallet, or discourage you from using a regulated provider.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that an apparently successful account can be fabricated. A dashboard may show rapidly rising profits, and a victim may even be allowed to withdraw a small amount to build confidence. When the victim tries to withdraw a larger balance, the operator demands another deposit, a “tax,” an account-unlocking charge, or a fee. A displayed balance is not proof that funds exist or can be withdrawn.

They pressure you for intimate images

Sextortion is a related tactic. A person develops a romantic or sexual connection, persuades you to send an explicit photograph or video, and then threatens to distribute it unless you pay. The FTC reported that sextortion reports increased more than eightfold from 2019; people aged 18 to 29 reported it more than six times as often as people aged 30 and older.

Do not send intimate images to someone you have met online. If a person threatens disclosure, stop negotiating, preserve messages and account details, do not pay, and seek help from a trusted person and the relevant platform or law-enforcement channel. Paying rarely ends the demands.

Compare the interaction across four risk areas

There is no official point score that can authenticate a romantic contact. Instead, examine the whole interaction in four areas. A strong warning in any area deserves a pause; several together justify ending transfers and seeking outside help.

Risk area Lower-risk behavior Warning pattern What to do
Privacy and isolation They are comfortable with you taking time, keeping chats on-platform, and consulting friends. They quickly demand private contact, tell you to hide the relationship, or become angry when others ask questions. Keep records on-platform, tell someone you trust, and do not let the person control who can advise you.
Identity and meeting Details remain consistent and the person accepts a reasonable live verification or meeting plan. Names, jobs, locations, photographs, or timelines conflict; meetings and video calls are repeatedly postponed. Ask specific questions, verify through independent sources, and stop treating explanations as proof.
Money and personal data No request for funds, gifts, credentials, or identity documents. An emergency, loan, gift, fee, or request for account information appears before you have met. Send nothing. Contact your bank or provider if you already paid and secure exposed accounts.
Investment and withdrawals No pressure to trade through a person’s preferred site or wallet. Guaranteed or secret profits, crypto-only deposits, a rising on-screen balance, and new taxes or fees when you withdraw. Do not deposit more. Treat the account balance as unverified and report the scheme.

Free checks that can expose inconsistencies

Ask questions and slow the pace

Ask where the person lives now, where they grew up, what their work schedule is, and how their proposed visit would work. Ask the same subject at different times and note whether details stay consistent. A genuine person may make ordinary mistakes; deliberate contradictions, evasive answers, or anger at routine questions are more concerning.

Do not use questions as a challenge that you must “win.” The goal is to give yourself time and compare claims with information outside the relationship.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Check photographs and claimed identity

Use a reverse-image search on profile photographs. Search the person’s claimed job, name, or story together with the word “scammer.” The same photograph under different names, a résumé that belongs to someone else, or a location that does not match the person’s story can reveal a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These checks are clues, not forensic proof. A photo may be copied without the real person knowing, and a search may find nothing about a new scam account. Never send money merely because a search appears clean.

Protect the conversation and your accounts

  • Keep messages, usernames, profile links, payment instructions, wallet addresses, receipts, and dates.
  • Limit what you disclose about your finances, home, workplace, family, travel plans, and security questions.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication, especially if you shared an email address or identifying details.
  • Do not install software, allow remote access, or share one-time codes at a romantic contact’s request.

What to do when a request arrives

  1. Stop and do not pay. Do not use a gift card, wire, payment app, bank transfer, or cryptocurrency wallet to prove affection or solve the person’s crisis.
  2. Pause the conversation. You do not need to explain or debate. Save evidence before blocking, because account names and messages may disappear.
  3. Tell a trusted person. Choose someone who can listen without shaming you and who can help review the timeline and payment request.
  4. Verify independently. Use contact details you find yourself—not a phone number, website, or wallet address supplied by the supposed partner.
  5. Secure exposed accounts. Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, contact your bank about suspicious access, and monitor statements and credit reports if you shared identity information.
  6. Report the account and the fraud. Use the dating or social platform’s reporting function and the government channels described below.

If you already sent money

Act immediately, even if the payment was weeks ago. Contact the bank, card issuer, payment company, gift-card company, or cryptocurrency service that handled the transfer. Explain clearly that you sent funds to a romance scammer and ask whether the transaction can be canceled, recalled, frozen, or investigated. The FTC says it is worth asking about recovery, but the money may already be gone; no agency can guarantee that it will be returned.

Do not pay a second company or “recovery agent” that promises to retrieve the funds for an upfront fee. Scammers often target victims again with fake investigators, lawyers, or government representatives. Keep every receipt, transaction ID, wallet address, email header, telephone number, and screenshot for the payment provider and investigators.

Where to report in the United States

  • Dating or social platform: Report the profile, messages, payment request, and any linked accounts. Platform reports can help remove the account and connect related activity.
  • Federal Trade Commission: File a consumer-fraud report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the timeline, aliases, contact methods, payment method, and amount.
  • FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center: For internet-enabled crime, submit a complaint at IC3.gov. Preserve original evidence and transaction information.
  • Commodity Futures Trading Commission: If the contact promoted a fraudulent commodity, foreign-exchange, or cryptocurrency investment, use the CFTC’s complaint channel as well.

These reporting routes are U.S. agencies. If you live elsewhere, use your country’s consumer-protection authority, financial regulator, police or cybercrime unit, and the payment provider’s fraud team. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it can help identify linked accounts and protect others.

How friends and family can help

A person caught in a romance scam may feel loyal, embarrassed, or certain that outsiders do not understand the relationship. Shaming them can drive the conversation underground and leave the scammer as their only source of support.

  • Ask open questions: “How did you meet?” “Have you met or video-called?” and “What happens if you do not send the money today?”
  • Listen for a new online relationship paired with first-time cryptocurrency investing, repeated emergencies, or secrecy about payments.
  • Share the warning signs and offer to review messages or payment instructions together.
  • Focus on safety and next steps rather than saying, “I told you so.”
  • If money has been sent, help contact the bank and reporting agencies promptly.

You cannot force another adult to end a relationship, but you can keep communication open. A calm, nonjudgmental offer of help may be what allows the person to recognize the pattern.

What the reported numbers show—and what they do not

The FTC said in a February 2023 article that it received nearly 70,000 romance-scam reports and $1.3 billion in reported losses during 2022. Those figures describe reports received by the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network, not the total number of scams or every loss. The same FTC reporting said social media was identified as the initial contact method in 40% of reports.

For 2022 reports, more than 60% of reported romance-scam losses involved cryptocurrency and bank wires, and 24% of people who reported losing money said gift cards were the payment method. Payment methods change, but the practical rule does not: a request for a difficult-to-reverse payment is a reason to stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CFTC advisory accessed in 2026 describes more than $3.5 billion stolen in 2023 by financial-romance and grooming gangs. The cited passage does not fully specify the statistic’s dataset or geographic scope, so it should not be treated as a complete worldwide prevalence estimate.

FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs summarized the central test in a February 3, 2026 advisory: “Requests for money, cryptocurrency, or your personal information are clear warning signs of a scam, not a legitimate relationship.”

A practical decision rule

If you have not met the person in real life and they ask for money, cryptocurrency, gifts, investment deposits, withdrawal fees, or sensitive personal information, stop sending anything and seek an outside opinion. If they also isolate you, cannot verify their identity, repeatedly avoid meeting, or present contradictory stories, treat the interaction as a scam rather than waiting for one more explanation.

Trust should grow through consistent behavior that survives reasonable questions and independent checks. It should never be measured by how much money, secrecy, or personal risk you are willing to provide.
