In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, select the Content tab, filter for Live, then look at How viewers find your live streams. The report attributes views to sources such as Browse features, YouTube Search, Suggested videos, Playlists, External, and Direct or unknown. Read those labels as evidence of where attributed views came from—not as proof of why viewership rose or fell.
Where to find the traffic-source report
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics.
- Choose the Content tab and select the Live filter.
- Find How viewers find your live streams. Confirm the selected content and date range before recording or comparing results.
YouTube describes this report as showing how viewers found live streams across Browse features, YouTube Search, Suggested videos, Direct or unknown, Channel pages, and other sources. The exact controls may differ: YouTube reports that an updated Studio experience began rolling out gradually in July 2026. What each traffic-source label means
Use YouTube’s category definitions rather than inferring a more specific source than the report provides. A source’s share describes attributed traffic during the selected period; it does not establish what caused that traffic.

| Direct or unknown | A combined category that includes direct URL entry, bookmarks, signed-out viewers, and unidentified apps. Do not treat all of it as external referrals. |

How to interpret sources for a continuous stream
Compare equivalent periods
Choose a deliberate date range and write it down. Compare the same length and type of period where possible, and compare live streams with other live streams rather than treating different content formats as interchangeable. YouTube notes that audience behavior differs by format and recommends examining top sources, search terms, and patterns among more popular live streams.
Pair discovery with viewing context
Read source mix alongside impressions, impressions click-through rate (CTR), views, and average view duration. Impressions count thumbnail displays on YouTube, not displays on external sites or apps. CTR gives context for how often people watched after seeing the thumbnail; average view duration helps describe how long viewers watched. These measures add context, but none by itself explains a source change.

Separate correlation from cause
If Browse features or Suggested videos rises, that tells you more attributed views came through those categories in the selected period; it does not identify the precise recommendation or explain why YouTube surfaced the stream. Consider what else changed—such as stream packaging, playlist placement, channel promotion, or external embeds—but record those changes separately rather than treating attribution as causal proof.
YouTube’s documentation does not specify special source-attribution behavior for 24/7 streams, how restarts affect attribution, or a best evaluation interval for always-on broadcasts. If you need to examine a restart or operational segment, keep that information in your own records; Analytics does not document a feature that labels those segments for you.

A practical workflow for diagnosing a change
- Set the scope. Select Live and the date range, then note which stream or content selection the report covers.
- Record the mix. Note the main source categories and their view contribution for that period.
- Inspect available detail. Check search terms, suggested videos, playlists, or external sites on the relevant traffic-source cards where those details are shown.
- Add context. Compare source mix with impressions, impressions CTR, views, and average view duration for the same period.
- Look for repeatability. Compare equivalent periods before attributing a change to a promotion, playlist adjustment, embed, or packaging change. Keep those operational notes distinct from what Analytics directly reports.
- State limitations. If detail is absent or sparse, report that plainly; do not fill gaps with guesses.
What to know about data timing and missing detail
YouTube says some Analytics data, including traffic-source data, may be limited. Its help pages do not give a universal numeric threshold at which source details are hidden, so a missing breakdown does not establish a particular audience size or cause.
YouTube’s live-metrics documentation says video-level metrics in Analytics are based on the Video ID after processing and despamming, and may become available within minutes after a stream ends. It distinguishes Analytics data from measurements in Live Control Room. Do not treat a Live Control Room real-time number as interchangeable with a processed Analytics report.
