You can read Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary for little or no cost by checking your public library’s print and ebook catalog first. If you need it sooner, compare local paperback and ebook prices. The original “before the movie comes out” deadline has passed: the film opened in theaters on March 20, 2026, and Amazon says it is now streaming worldwide on Prime Video.
Start with your public library
Search your library’s catalog for Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, checking both print and ebook formats. If your library offers Libby or OverDrive, search there as well; some library catalogs include digital copies. For example, Cleveland Public Library’s OverDrive catalog lists a Libby ebook of the novel.

That listing is evidence of availability at one library, not a guarantee for yours. Your library may not own the ebook, may limit access to eligible cardholders, or may have a waitlist. Check the listing for format, current availability, and hold options. A library loan is often the best first step if minimizing cost matters more than getting the book immediately.
If you want the book sooner, compare local prices
Andy Weir’s publisher lists Project Hail Mary in paperback and ebook formats. The Penguin Books UK page lists the paperback with ISBN 9781529157468 at £9.99. That is a UK publisher-listed price, not a global price or a guarantee of current stock or pricing elsewhere. Check retailers in your region for the format you want and compare the total price before buying.

For a UK listing of formats and retailer options, see Penguin Books’ page for Project Hail Mary. Buying may avoid a library hold, but the available formats, prices, and stock depend on your location and retailer.
Choose by cost, format, and wait time
| Option | Cash cost | Access time | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public-library print copy | Potentially free to borrow | Depends on local stock and holds | Card eligibility, copy availability, and hold queue |
| Library ebook | Potentially free to borrow | Depends on the library’s digital copies and holds | Whether your library offers the title through Libby or OverDrive and whether a copy is available |
| Retail paperback or ebook | Varies by region and retailer | Depends on local stock or digital access | Current price, format, and availability |
No source establishes a universally cheapest option or a typical library wait. Your local catalog and retailer listings are the practical way to compare.
What changed about the movie timing
The film is no longer upcoming: Penguin Random House lists its theatrical release as March 20, 2026. Amazon’s July 3, 2026 update says it is streaming worldwide on Prime Video. Streaming availability and pricing can vary locally, so check Amazon in your region. The film’s release does not change the reading options above.

Amazon says the audiobook has sold more than 2 million copies and won the 2022 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year. Those figures do not establish that your library lends it. Search your own library’s audio catalog and check the format and hold status before relying on a free loan.
