Start with The Way of Kings, then read the five main novels in numbered order through Wind and Truth. For the fuller sequence, add the two optional novellas: Edgedancer after Book 2 and Dawnshard after Book 3. A television adaptation has been reported as part of a deal, but no premiere date is announced on Brandon Sanderson’s adaptation-news page.
The Stormlight Archive reading order
Brandon Sanderson’s official Stormlight Archive series page numbers the main novels and places two novellas between them. Read in this order:
- The Way of Kings — Book 1
- Words of Radiance — Book 2
- Edgedancer — Book 2.5; optional novella focused on Lift
- Oathbringer — Book 3
- Dawnshard — Book 3.5; optional novella set between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War
- Rhythm of War — Book 4
- Wind and Truth — Book 5 and the climax of the first arc
Choose the core story or the fuller sequence
For the core story
Read the five main novels in order: The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, and Wind and Truth. This is the straightforward path through the numbered novels.
For the fuller sequence
Insert Edgedancer after Words of Radiance and Dawnshard after Oathbringer. Sanderson’s series page labels them Books 2.5 and 3.5. Both are optional stops between the main novels, rather than substitutes for them.

The same page also lists short Story Deck works such as Elsecaller and King Lopen as Books 2.6 and 2.7. They are separate extras; they do not change the main-novel order above.
Do you need to read other Cosmere books first?
No prerequisite is established in Sanderson’s published reading-order material. His FAQ on Cosmere chronology places Warbreaker before The Stormlight Archive, but chronological placement is not an instruction that new readers must read it first. You can begin with The Way of Kings; consider Warbreaker only if you want broader Cosmere context.

What is known about the TV adaptation?
As of October 8, 2026, Sanderson’s Film and TV News page links to a Hollywood Reporter report about an Apple TV deal for the Cosmere. The author’s page summarizes Mistborn as being eyed for film and The Stormlight Archive for television. It does not announce a Stormlight premiere date, cast, episode count, or production calendar, so there is no confirmed date to read toward.
For context, Sanderson described Mistborn/Stormlight adaptation work as “(Very early) Step Four” in his 2025 State of the Sanderson. That was his description at the time, before the later deal report; it was not a premiere timeline. For updates, check the author’s current adaptation-news page.
