Playback-based CPM is the advertiser-side cost for every 1,000 video playbacks on which an ad appears. It is not the amount you earn per 1,000 livestream views: a playback can contain more than one ad, many views have no ad, and YouTube’s revenue share and other monetization sources affect creator earnings. YouTube’s published definition is general; it does not specify a special formula or expected CPM for looping livestreams.
What playback-based CPM counts
YouTube defines playback-based CPM as the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 video playbacks where an ad is displayed. The counted unit is an ad-bearing playback, not an individual ad impression and not every view. A single playback may include multiple ads, so ad impressions and monetized playbacks are different counts. YouTube’s ad revenue analytics guide defines both CPM measures.
For a looping livestream, read the figure the same way: as advertiser cost associated with ad-bearing playbacks. YouTube treats live streaming as video for its monetization policies and allows monetized live streams to serve ads, but its documentation does not give loops a separate CPM calculation or benchmark. YouTube’s monetization policies include live streaming in their definition of video.
How the metric differs from CPM and RPM

RPM is generally the more useful of these measures when asking what a creator receives per 1,000 views. Playback-based CPM describes advertiser pricing for ad-bearing playbacks, not your earnings. YouTube cautions that multiplying CPM by total views will not calculate creator revenue: not every view has an ad, and revenue share applies. See YouTube’s explanation of CPM and RPM.

A worked example: why the two CPM figures differ
In YouTube’s illustrative example, a video has 5,000 views. Of those, 1,000 playbacks contain one ad and 500 other playbacks contain two ads. That is 1,500 monetized playbacks and 2,000 ad impressions. With $7 in advertiser cost, CPM is $3.50 per 1,000 impressions, while playback-based CPM is $4.67 per 1,000 monetized playbacks.
These numbers are only the arithmetic in YouTube’s example, not typical rates or a benchmark for livestreams. Conceptually, playback-based CPM is advertiser cost attributed to ads on the content divided by monetized playbacks, then multiplied by 1,000. Do not substitute total stream views for monetized playbacks.

Why a livestream view may not have an ad
A view does not guarantee an ad. YouTube says live-stream ad slots are not guaranteed to serve: its systems decide whether a particular slot receives an ad. More generally, whether an ad appears can vary with content suitability, ad settings and availability, targeting, viewer geography, recent ad exposure, and whether the viewer has YouTube Premium. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the live-slot caveat.
Consequently, a gap between total views and ad-bearing playbacks is not, by itself, evidence that a loop is malfunctioning or that its content is unsuitable. The CPM metric concerns the pricing of ad-bearing playbacks; it does not say what share of views received ads.

How to interpret a change in playback-based CPM
CPM can move because of seasonality, changes in viewer geography, or changes in the available ad formats. A higher or lower figure alone is not a reliable signal that the content—or the looping setup—has improved or worsened. Compare equivalent date ranges and consider whether the audience mix or ad-format mix changed. Separately check whether the number of ad-bearing playbacks changed; a shift in that count is different from a change in advertiser price. YouTube lists these factors in its analytics guidance.
Where to check live-stream revenue in Analytics
- Open YouTube Studio Analytics and select the Revenue report. Choose the live stream or relevant content and set the date range you want to assess.
- Check the selected format and filters. YouTube reports live-stream ad revenue and live-replay revenue. Its live-metrics help page says revenue reports are unavailable when that view is filtered to “Live” alone; this limitation does not mean live revenue is unavailable in Analytics overall. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance and its monetization options explanation.
- Read early revenue as an estimate. Estimated revenue may later be adjusted, including for invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, or some campaign types. YouTube says updates may occur after one week and again in the middle of the following month. Check YouTube’s revenue guidance for the adjustment timing.
YouTube also changed how views are counted across formats beginning August 24, 2026: views began counting at video start. YouTube says this did not change YPP earnings or eligibility bases. Do not confuse that views-counting update with playback-based CPM’s denominator. YouTube describes the views update here.

What looping does—and does not—tell you about CPM
The fact that video repeats does not establish a special CPM rate or formula. The available YouTube guidance defines playback-based CPM generally and explains that live ad slots may or may not serve ads; it does not state that repeated cycles inherently raise or lower CPM. To investigate one stream, use its own Analytics data with the relevant date range and format filters, and distinguish ad-bearing playbacks from total views.
