To put one picture on top of another in an Instagram Story, use the first photo as the background, then add the second through the Photo or Image sticker in the Stickers tray. You can move, resize and rotate the added photo before sharing. This makes one Story canvas with two separate layers—not two consecutive Story slides.
Add a full photo over another photo
- Open Instagram on your phone and start a new Story by tapping + and choosing Story, or swiping right from the feed.
- Choose or take the photo you want in the background.
- Tap the Stickers button at the top of the editor.
- Choose Photo, Image, or the camera-roll image sticker. The wording and icon can vary by app version, device, account and language.
- Select the second photo. It appears as an independent sticker above the background.
- Position and adjust it, then add any text or other elements you want.
- Preview the Story and tap Your Story, Close Friends, or the relevant sharing option.
Instagram’s Story sticker help page confirms that stickers can be added to Story photos and videos, although some sticker options may not be available to every account or in every format. The Photo/Image control is not labeled identically everywhere.

Move, resize, rotate or remove the top picture
- Move: Drag the overlay with one finger.
- Resize: Put two fingers on it and pinch inward to shrink or outward to enlarge.
- Rotate: Twist two fingers while touching the photo.
- Remove: Drag the selected photo toward the trash/bin area, or use a delete control if one appears.
If the overlay is difficult to select, tap it first and move other elements out of the way temporarily. You can also undo and add the elements again in a different order. Sticker gestures can vary slightly with the editor; Canva’s Story guidance likewise describes dragging and pinching to position and resize stickers.

Repeat Stickers → Photo/Image for each additional picture. Each one becomes a separate movable element, so you can build a loose collage or mood board on the same Story canvas. With many large images, editing can become slower and selecting the right layer can be harder.

Put a person or object on top with Cutouts
If you want a person, pet or product without the original rectangular background, use Instagram’s Cutouts sticker instead of the regular Photo sticker:
- Choose the background photo or video for a new Story.
- Open Stickers and tap Cutouts.
- Choose a clear photo or video from your camera roll and wait for Instagram to detect the subject.
- If the automatic selection is wrong, tap Select manually and choose the subject.
- Use the generated sticker, then move, resize or rotate it over the background.
Instagram’s Cutouts help page says the feature can turn part of a camera-roll photo or video into a sticker for a Story or Reel, and that created stickers are saved for reuse. Manual selection is limited to one subject at a time. Cutouts is automatic extraction, not a guarantee of a perfect edge: hair, motion blur, clutter, low contrast and overlapping subjects can confuse it. A clearer image, a tighter crop or a transparent PNG prepared in an editor may work better.

Choose the right tool for the result

Choose Layout for a grid, the Photo/Image sticker for freeform overlap, and Cutouts for a subject-only layer. If you need a specific color, texture or gradient behind the overlay, select a background photo or use Instagram’s solid-color Story background; use an editor for more exact design control.

Layer order and Stories with video or interactive elements
You can use a photo or video as the Story background and add an image sticker above it, but availability and behavior can differ by sticker, app version and device. Instagram does not promise unrestricted layer ordering between every kind of element. A link, poll, music lyric or shared-post card may not behave like an ordinary photo sticker.

For a better chance of getting the desired order, add the background first, then ordinary image overlays, and add interactive stickers last. If an image will not sit above a particular element, rearrange the design or flatten the visual composition in an editor. A screenshot or flattened image may lose the shared post’s tappable link or other interactive behavior.
If the Photo/Image sticker is missing
- Update Instagram through the App Store or Google Play, then close and reopen the app.
- Start a fresh Story rather than editing an old draft, and inspect the full Stickers tray for Photo, Image or an image-shaped icon.
- Check whether you are using Instagram Lite or whether the option may be unavailable for your account, region or Story format.
- Try Cutouts if it is available, or compose the image in an external editor and upload the finished result.
- Reinstall only as a last resort, after making sure you can log in again and are willing to risk losing drafts.
Instagram advises updating the app when stickers are missing and notes that availability can vary by country, account and format. Its help page also notes that some stickers may be unavailable in Japan and countries in Europe. The native multiple-photo Story feature is mobile-focused and unavailable on computers.

When an external editor makes sense
For a quick two-photo overlay, Instagram’s tools are normally enough. If you need exact alignment, branded fonts, a logo, shadows, borders, reusable templates or more reliable control of layer order, you can build the composition in Canva’s Instagram Story editor or Adobe Express and upload the finished image. That gives you more design control, but the layers are flattened when exported, so you cannot move each photo independently in Instagram afterward. Add native interactive stickers separately if you need polls, links or other tappable elements.
Copy-and-paste as a workaround
On some devices—particularly in certain iPhone and iOS workflows—you may be able to copy a photo from the Photos app, return to the Story editor and paste it as an image element. This behavior depends on the device, operating system and Instagram version, so it is less reliable as a general method than using the in-app Photo/Image sticker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do this on a computer?
The native layered Story workflow is intended for Instagram’s mobile app; Meta says the multiple-photo Story feature is unavailable on computers.
Can I add a photo with a transparent background?
For a subject-only overlay, try Cutouts or upload a transparent PNG prepared in an image editor. The ordinary Photo/Image sticker may retain the photo’s background.
Can I put a picture above a music or link sticker?
Not always. Interactive elements may have layer restrictions. Add ordinary photo overlays first and interactive stickers afterward; if the order still will not work, rearrange or flatten the design externally.
