What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Following Gaza coverage does not by itself make an ordinary reader a likely target for spyware. You can, however, reduce routine exposure, protect your accounts, and lower the chance that a malicious message or oversharing incident compromises you or someone you contact. Start with unique passwords, two-factor authentication, current software, tighter account visibility, and skepticism toward unexpected links. People reporting from the region, organizing, documenting abuses, or living in Gaza, Israel, or the West Bank may face a different and substantially higher-risk threat model and should seek tailored advice.
What ordinary readers should do first
Complete these steps before installing specialist tools. They address the most common ways an account or device is exposed and work on major phones, computers, browsers, and social platforms.
- Use a different, long password for every important account. A password manager can create and store random passwords. Protect the manager itself with a strong master passphrase and, where offered, a hardware-backed or app-based second factor.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). An authenticator app or security key is generally stronger than text-message codes, but SMS 2FA is still better than no second factor when other options are unavailable. Save the service’s recovery codes offline.
- Update operating systems, browsers, messaging apps, and extensions. Enable automatic updates when practical. Restart after an update if the device requests it; a downloaded patch that has not been installed does not protect you.
- Review who can see your information. In each social account, inspect profile visibility, phone-number and email discoverability, location tagging, old posts, tagged photos, contact syncing, direct-message permissions, and connected third-party apps. Remove access you no longer recognize.
- Install only apps you trust and still need. Avoid unknown app stores, cracked software, and files sent by strangers. Check the developer name, permissions, update history, and whether the app is actually required before installing it.
These measures are also the core of the fact sheet summarized by the Institute for Cyber Security and Privacy Research (ICSPR) in its 8 September 2026 release. ICSPR described protecting people and institutions in the digital space as “an urgent community and human-rights priority.” Its notice says the fact sheet was issued in partnership with The Shaikh Group and may not necessarily reflect both organizations’ views.
Match your precautions to your situation
For readers, viewers, and people sharing links
Your likely objective is to prevent routine tracking, account takeover, accidental disclosure, and phishing. The first-step checklist above, careful sharing, and sensible browser and messaging choices usually provide proportionate protection. Reading a report, watching a video, or reposting a public article does not establish that you are being individually monitored.

For journalists, investigators, organizers, and witnesses
Reporting, documenting, coordinating aid, handling unpublished material, or communicating with people in a conflict zone can expose identities, locations, sources, and devices. A tailored threat assessment should consider who may target you, what information they want, how much access they have, and what happens if a device is seized or compromised. Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline, SMEX’s Digital Safety Helpdesk, Front Line Defenders, and the Digital First Aid Kit are named support options in Access Now’s Gaza-focused guidance. Check current eligibility and availability directly.
For people physically in Gaza, Israel, or the West Bank
Network outages, surveillance, device searches, harassment, and account restrictions can change the practical risk. Advice written for a reader abroad may be inadequate or unsafe. Avoid encouraging someone in the region to install a measurement or circumvention app without understanding local conditions and the consequences if its use is noticed.
Recognize and stop phishing
Phishing is a message designed to make you reveal a password or code, install malware, send money, or open a page controlled by an attacker. It can imitate a newsroom, aid group, platform, colleague, family member, or a person whose story you are following. A familiar logo or a message that knows your name is not proof of authenticity.
Access Now’s guidance states: “When you receive an email, SMS, or direct message on social media, always verify the sender.” Treat urgency, secrecy, threats of account closure, requests for a verification code, unexpected documents, and shortened or misspelled links as warning signs.

A safe verification routine
- Pause. Do not click while the message is creating urgency. Do not reply with a code, password, identity document, or precise location.
- Inspect without opening. On a computer, hover over a link; on a phone, press and hold to preview the destination. Look for a domain that is subtly misspelled or unrelated to the supposed sender. Do not assume a padlock proves the site is legitimate; it only describes the connection to that site.
- Verify independently. Find the person’s known phone number, official website, or an existing conversation and ask through that separate channel. Do not use contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
- Confirm the request, not just the identity. An account can be hijacked. Ask what the file is, why it is needed, and whether the sender actually sent it.
- Report and remove. Use the platform’s phishing or abuse report function, then delete or quarantine the message. If you opened it, continue with the recovery steps below rather than hiding the incident.
If you clicked or opened something
- Disconnect the device from networks if you suspect an active download, but do not destroy evidence needed for support.
- From a different, trusted device, change the affected account’s password and every other account that reused it.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions and connected apps; regenerate recovery codes and check whether the recovery email or phone number changed.
- Run the operating system’s reputable security checks, install pending updates, and seek specialist help if the device behaves strangely or the account remains controlled by someone else.
Use browser privacy for searches, not as a promise of anonymity
A privacy-enhancing browser can limit some advertising identifiers, cross-site tracking, and local history. It does not make an account activity invisible to the service you sign into, erase records kept by a website, or protect a device that is already compromised. Access Now’s November 2023 update names Tor Browser and Firefox Focus as examples. Features and availability may have changed since that guidance was published, so install from the official project source and keep the browser current.
Use a separate browser profile for sensitive research if that helps you avoid mixing personal logins with investigative browsing. Keep downloads in a clearly labeled folder, remove files you no longer need, and remember that a document can contain identifying metadata or malicious content even when the browser itself is privacy-focused.
Understand VPNs, proxies, Tor, and censorship checks
These tools address different problems. None is a universal anonymity switch, and the civil-society guidance cited here provides no head-to-head performance test, price comparison, independent audit, or jurisdiction ranking.
| Tool or approach | Primary purpose | What it does not guarantee | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Privacy-focused browser | Reduce some browser tracking and separate search activity from normal browsing. | It does not hide activity from a logged-in service or secure a compromised endpoint. | Keep it updated; avoid assuming private mode equals anonymity. |
| VPN or proxy | Encrypt traffic between your device and the provider and may help when a network blocks a service. | It does not stop all tracking, make the provider unable to see connection information, or protect a compromised device. | Reliability, legal conditions, location, and blocking vary. Access Now lists ProtonVPN and TunnelBear as examples in its 2023 guide. |
| Tor Browser | Route browsing through the Tor network to make source tracing harder in many situations. | It does not protect accounts you identify yourself with, and it cannot fix malware or careless disclosure. | If Tor is blocked, Access Now discusses bridges. Connection speed and availability can vary. |
| Psiphon or Lantern | Examples of circumvention tools for reaching blocked services. | They do not guarantee confidentiality, anonymity, or uninterrupted access. | Check current local legality, safety, and the provider’s present documentation. |
| OONI Probe | Measure whether sites or platforms appear to be censored from a particular location. | It is not a private browsing tool and its use is not risk-free. | Access Now advises caution. Consider who could observe the test and what information it may reveal before running it. |
Choose based on the problem you are solving: browser privacy for searches, encrypted network transport or circumvention for a blocked connection, and secure messaging for a private conversation. Do not install several unfamiliar tools at once; you will not know which permission or behavior caused a problem.

Communicate more safely when sharing or receiving information
Access Now names Signal and Wire as examples of secure messaging applications. End-to-end encryption can protect message contents while they travel, but it cannot protect a phone that is unlocked, infected, backed up insecurely, or being viewed by the recipient. Confirm that you are speaking with the intended person using the app’s safety-number, key, or identity-verification feature when available.
Before sending
- Remove unnecessary names, faces, phone numbers, addresses, document metadata, and precise location details.
- Ask whether the recipient needs the original file or only a redacted copy.
- Use disappearing messages only when they fit the situation; they do not prevent screenshots, forwarding, or forensic recovery.
- Do not forward unverified claims or graphic material merely because it is urgent. A repost can expose a witness or identify a location.
Before accepting
- Verify the sender through a separate channel, especially if a file, link, money transfer, or meeting is requested.
- Download only when the device and app are updated and you understand where the file will be saved.
- Keep sensitive conversations off shared, work-managed, or borrowed devices.
Reduce doxxing and accidental exposure
Doxxing is the publication or targeting of identifying information such as a home address, private phone number, workplace, family details, or live location. It can begin with data that seems harmless when combined across platforms.
- Search your own name, usernames, email addresses, and phone number from a logged-out browser to see what is publicly visible.
- Remove location history, geotags, EXIF metadata, and photographs showing house numbers, school uniforms, street signs, or travel plans before posting.
- Use separate usernames and email addresses for public commentary and private accounts. Do not list your employer, routine, or family relationships unless necessary.
- Ask platforms and search engines about removal procedures for exposed personal information. Preserve screenshots, URLs, dates, and threatening messages before reporting.
- Tell household members what not to post about you. A private account can still leak through another person’s public photo or contact list.
If someone publishes your details or threatens you, prioritize physical safety. Do not confront the poster, publish their information in return, or meet an online contact alone. Contact the platform, local authorities where appropriate, and one of the specialist digital-safety organizations named above.
Account recovery after hacking or lockout
Signs to check
- Password-reset emails you did not request.
- New login alerts, devices, locations, forwarding rules, or connected applications.
- Messages, posts, or donations sent from your account without your action.
- Changed recovery email, phone number, profile name, or two-factor method.
Recovery order
- Secure the email account that controls password resets, using a trusted device.
- Change the compromised service’s password to a unique one and sign out all other sessions.
- Restore your own recovery details, remove unauthorized 2FA methods, and generate new recovery codes.
- Review financial, cloud-storage, contact, and messaging accounts that shared the same password or device.
- Notify contacts that previous messages may not have been yours. Warn them not to open links sent during the compromise.
- Document what happened and contact the platform’s recovery team or a specialist helpdesk if access cannot be restored.
What current figures do—and do not—say about online exposure
ICSPR’s 8 September 2026 release estimates internet use across Palestine at 88%–90%, smartphone penetration at more than 82%, and the share of social-media users aged 18–35 at approximately 80%–85%. These are Palestine-wide estimates attributed to ICSPR, not Gaza-only measurements or independently verified official statistics. The release names Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok as widely used platforms but supplies no platform-specific percentages.

An Access Now and ImpACT International ISP-privacy report describes 54 interviewed customers and 209 survey respondents from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Among questionnaire respondents, 30.8% said they did not know what “privacy policy” meant, more than 33% said they did not read one before approving it, and 36.2% said they read one only occasionally. The report page does not establish a publication date, and these figures should not be treated as current population-wide estimates.
Those numbers explain why privacy settings and clear consent matter; they do not show that every reader is under surveillance. CPJ’s journalist-focused reporting documented 83 journalists and media workers killed while covering the war, 16 injured, three missing, and 25 arrested as of 25 January 2024. That dated count concerns journalists and should not be generalized to ordinary people reading news. CPJ quoted journalist Galina Timchenko describing a Pegasus infection as, “I feel like I am naked in the street.” It is a journalist’s account of a high-risk incident, not a typical reader’s expected experience.

Privacy is a set of habits rather than a single purchase. For most people following coverage, disciplined account security and careful verification provide the greatest benefit. Use browser, network, messaging, and measurement tools for their specific purposes, understand their limits, and escalate to expert help when your role, location, or circumstances create risks beyond those of ordinary news consumption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can reading Gaza news infect my phone with spyware?
Reading a legitimate article does not by itself establish that your phone is targeted. The more common concerns are phishing, reused passwords, unsafe apps, exposed profile data, and compromised accounts. People with a high-risk role or direct regional involvement should seek a tailored assessment.
Should I use a VPN every time I follow coverage?
Not necessarily. A VPN or proxy can encrypt traffic to its provider and may help with a blocked network, but it does not stop all tracking, guarantee anonymity, or secure a compromised device. Choose tools according to your location, network conditions, and specific need.
Is OONI Probe safe to run?
It measures possible censorship and is not a general privacy tool. Access Now advises caution because the risks of running measurement tests can depend on the place and circumstances. Consider who could observe the test before using it.
Where can I get help after doxxing or an account takeover?
Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline, SMEX’s Digital Safety Helpdesk, Front Line Defenders, and the Digital First Aid Kit are named support resources. Check their current eligibility and contact details, and use a safe account when seeking assistance.
