You can stay informed about a war without repeatedly watching traumatic footage. The most protective approach is deliberate: decide what you need to know, check reliable reporting at chosen times, turn off unwanted alerts, and switch from video to written or audio coverage when images become overwhelming.
Pay attention to your body and mood. A racing heart, sweaty palms, faster breathing, persistent dread or difficulty returning to ordinary activities are reasons to pause, not signs that you have failed to keep up. If distress continues, disrupts daily life or feels severe, contact a qualified mental-health professional or an appropriate local support service.
Why graphic war coverage can affect you
War reporting can communicate urgent facts while also exposing viewers to injury, death, destruction and grief. The impact varies by person. Previous trauma, personal connections to the region, professional duties, age and the amount and form of exposure all matter.
The American Psychological Association (APA) reported that a spring 2020 survey of 2,251 adults found an association between more frequent COVID-19 information seeking through television, newspapers and social media and greater emotional distress. The finding does not prove that news exposure alone caused distress, and it does not predict how any individual will respond to war coverage.

In its 2022 guidance on experiencing war from afar, the APA says research links overexposure to crisis media with worse mental and physical health outcomes. Psychologist Roxane Cohen Silver of the University of California, Irvine, summarized the pattern this way: “The greater the amount of exposure people have to media about a tragedy, the more likely they are to report distress.” That is a reason to manage exposure, not a demand to avoid all news.
No source establishes a universally safe number of minutes, a medically approved number of daily check-ins or a single symptom-duration cutoff for seeking care. Use your response and your responsibilities to set boundaries rather than treating a timer as a guarantee.
Build an intentional news routine
Define the information you actually need
Before opening an app or stream, name the purpose of the check: a major security development, the situation of relatives, a humanitarian update, or enough context for a documentary project. A specific question makes it easier to stop when you have an answer. If you cannot state a purpose, postpone the check until you can.
Separate different needs. A family-safety update may require an official notice, while background on a ceasefire may be better served by a contextual written report. Treating every notification as equally urgent encourages unnecessary exposure. Write the question in a note before you open a feed; when the question is answered, close it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose check-in windows
Select a small number of windows that fit your work, caregiving and time-zone needs. During a window, read or listen to a complete report from a credible source, then close the feed. The APA recommends limiting both the amount and the kinds of news you consume; scheduled windows put that advice into practice without pretending that one schedule suits everyone.
Do not interpret a chosen window as a clinically safe dose. On a day when the material concerns someone you know, you may need more information; on a day when your body is already stressed, you may need less. Adjust the next window instead of compensating with continuous refreshing. If your role requires rapid updates, define what counts as an actual alert and let nonessential developments wait for the next review.
Take control of alerts
Turn off push notifications that are not essential. Keep only alerts that serve a clearly defined safety or family need, and review those settings after the immediate situation changes. Removing surprise interruptions lets you decide when to receive an update rather than being pulled into graphic material while driving, working, eating or trying to sleep.
Mute keywords, accounts or channels that repeatedly post graphic material when your platform allows it. Disable autoplay and preview images where possible, and avoid putting a news widget on the first screen of your phone. These are control options, not guarantees: a headline, description or audio clip can still be upsetting, so leave a source when your response rises.

When the report has answered your question, close the tab or app and move to a non-news activity. If you notice yourself opening the same feed repeatedly, treat that pattern as information: your routine is no longer serving its purpose. Re-set the next check-in rather than continuing by reflex.

A short transition helps mark the end of exposure. Put the phone down, change rooms, drink water or contact someone about an ordinary subject. Do not use another crisis feed as a way to calm down from the first one; that often extends the cycle of exposure.
Choose a format that reduces unwanted exposure
APA guidance notes that reading or listening may be less distressing for some people than watching disturbing images. This is not a claim that text or audio is harmless, or that video is harmful to everyone. It is a practical format change when visuals are the part that overwhelms you.
Written reporting
A written article lets you control the pace and stop before an image appears. Look for a clear description of what happened, what is verified and what remains uncertain. If a page begins autoplaying video or embeds graphic photographs, leave it and find a text-first report that meets your information need.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRead the headline, summary and key facts first, then decide whether more detail is necessary. A text report can contain vivid descriptions, so skim or stop if language is producing the same reaction as images. Save longer analysis for a time when you are rested rather than reading it late at night.
Audio reporting
Audio removes the visual component, but descriptions can still be upsetting. Start with a short, contextual report rather than an unedited live stream. Stop if voices, details or your own reaction become too intense.
Listen in a setting where you can pause easily, not while driving or doing a task that requires full attention. If an episode includes a warning about graphic descriptions, use that information to decide whether it answers your question without unnecessary exposure.
Context-rich reporting
Prefer reporting that explains location, chronology, evidence and consequences over an endless social feed. Context helps you understand an event without repeatedly encountering the most shocking clip. No outlet is error-free or universally neutral; assess whether a report identifies its sources, distinguishes confirmed facts from claims and gives enough background to interpret images responsibly.
Reuters’ journalistic standards illustrate why responsible outlets make these choices: “There must be a valid news reason for running such material and it will usually require a decision by a senior editor.” This is an editorial standard, not clinical advice. It signals that graphic imagery should have a clear public-interest purpose rather than being used merely to attract attention.
Unmoderated feeds and live video
Unmoderated feeds can present graphic or disturbing material without warning. Live video may repeat scenes or keep you watching after you have learned what you needed. If you use these formats for a specific reason, open them during a planned window, avoid automatic continuation and leave as soon as the relevant information is obtained.

Do not assume that a warning makes a clip emotionally safe. A warning gives you a chance to choose; it does not require you to proceed. If you encounter graphic material unexpectedly, close it rather than replaying it to verify what you saw. Seek confirmation from a contextual report instead.
| News choice | What it changes | When it may help |
|---|---|---|
| Graphic video or live stream | Provides moving images and may prolong exposure through repeated or continuing scenes. | Only when seeing the footage is necessary for a defined information need; stop when distress rises. |
| Written report | Removes moving images and allows the reader to control pace. | When visuals are the main trigger or when you need verified facts quickly. |
| Audio report | Removes visuals while retaining spoken explanation and descriptions. | When listening feels more manageable than watching; pause if descriptions become overwhelming. |
| Context-rich report | Supplies background and distinguishes evidence from claims. | When an endless feed is leaving you confused, agitated or repeatedly surprised by graphic material. |
| Unmoderated social feed | Can surface graphic or unverified material unexpectedly. | Not as your default source; use a deliberate alternative for routine updates. |
| Scheduled check-in | Creates a predictable point for news instead of constant interruption. | When repeated refreshing or alerts are driving your day. |
| Repeated alerts and refreshing | Increases the number of exposures and interrupts recovery between updates. | Reserve for a specific, time-limited need rather than ordinary monitoring. |
These are practical selection axes, not the result of a controlled comparison proving that one format is best for every person. Your response can change from one day to the next; reassess rather than forcing a format that is making you feel worse.

Recognize your warning signs and pause
Use bodily signals as an awareness prompt
Hannah Storm, founder of Headlines Network, told the Reuters Institute that people should consider “what you see, how long you see it for, where you are when you manage it.” In the same interview, she described signs such as a racing heart, sweaty palms and faster breathing. Her advice was developed for journalists handling traumatic material; applying it to an ordinary news reader is a practical adaptation, not a diagnostic test.
Other signals can include a tight jaw, tense shoulders, nausea, agitation, intrusive images, numbness, trouble concentrating or an inability to return to sleep. You do not need to identify a disorder before taking a break. The purpose of noticing is to make a timely choice.
Notice what happens after you stop. If your breathing settles and you can return to ordinary tasks, a break and a lower-exposure routine may be enough for that moment. If reactions keep returning, become stronger or interfere with responsibilities, treat that as a reason to seek support rather than as evidence that you need more information.
A simple pause sequence
- Stop the exposure. Close the video, put down the phone or remove the headphones.
- Orient to the present. Look around and name where you are and what you need to do next.
- Change the setting. Move away from the screen, get some water or step outside if that is safe.
- Choose a restorative activity. A walk, a hobby or a conversation with someone supportive are options discussed by experts quoted by the Associated Press; different activities work for different people.
- Decide later. Do not force yourself to resume coverage until your response has settled and the information is genuinely necessary.
Protect the parts of life that news can displace
Graphic coverage can crowd out sleep, meals, movement, work, study and contact with other people. Deliberately return to those ordinary routines after a news session. Physical well-being and social connection do not erase what happened; they give your nervous system periods without incoming crisis material.

The Reuters Institute’s 2023 discussion with Andrea Lampros and Alexa Koenig emphasized breaks, grief and community when people sift through graphic visuals from Gaza and beyond. Let yourself acknowledge sadness or anger without turning that feeling into another reason to keep scrolling. Talk with someone who can listen without pressuring you to consume more footage.
- Take a walk or do another form of movement that feels safe and manageable.
- Resume a hobby that occupies your hands and attention.
- Share what you are feeling with a trusted friend, family member or colleague.
- Step away from scrolling before sleep and protect a news-free transition into bed.
- Keep regular food, hydration and rest routines as far as circumstances allow.
These are coping options, not treatments with guaranteed results. Keep the ones that help and stop the ones that increase agitation. If a friend wants updates, agree on a way to share essential information without sending graphic clips or repeatedly reopening the topic.
If you handle graphic material for work
Journalists, researchers, documentary makers, translators, aid workers and editors may not be able to avoid disturbing images. Storm’s guidance offers a useful management question: limit exposure by considering what you view, how long you view it and where you are when you manage it.

Separate necessary professional review from casual viewing. Define the editorial task before opening material, use the least graphic source that can answer that task, and take planned breaks instead of waiting until you are flooded. When possible, tell a colleague that you are stepping away and use workplace support or supervision. Professional obligations do not make severe or persistent distress insignificant.
Keep a clear record of what must be viewed and what can be described by a colleague. Avoid taking traumatic material home on a personal device when a work system or secure review process is available. After a difficult assignment, make time for a debrief and an ordinary activity before immediately checking more footage. These steps manage exposure; they do not replace qualified care.
Reuters’ own editorial standard addresses the audience side of this problem: “There must be a valid news reason for running such material and it will usually require a decision by a senior editor.” That is an editorial rule, not clinical advice, but it explains why responsible coverage may crop, warn about or omit gratuitous imagery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apply different limits for children and teenagers
Do not transfer adult exposure findings to children. The APA summarizes research after the Oklahoma City bombing and the September 11 attacks in which children with heavier news exposure reported more trauma-related symptoms. Those findings concern children and should not be presented as a quantified effect for adults.
For a child, use age-appropriate explanations, avoid placing graphic footage in the background and pay attention to changes in sleep, behavior, play or school functioning. The APA’s child-specific guidance, “How much news coverage is OK for children?”, is the appropriate framework rather than an adult schedule. If a child is frightened or repeatedly asks the same question, answer honestly in simple language and reduce unnecessary exposure.
Watch together when news is necessary so a trusted adult can provide context and reassurance. Do not ask a child to prove that they are coping by watching more. For teenagers who follow events independently, discuss notification settings, reliable sources and how to report upsetting material without demanding a total news blackout.
Know when to seek professional support
Consider contacting a qualified mental-health professional or an appropriate local support service if distress persists, interferes with daily life or feels severe. Examples include ongoing inability to sleep, panic-like reactions, intrusive images that do not ease, withdrawal from normal activities or difficulty caring for yourself or someone who depends on you.
There is no universally applicable symptom-duration cutoff in the guidance cited here. You do not have to wait for a particular number of days if you are worried. A clinician can help distinguish an expected stress response from a problem needing treatment and can tailor support to your history, location and circumstances.
If you may hurt yourself or someone else, cannot stay safe or are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis service in your country now. News-management techniques are not a substitute for urgent help.

A practical decision guide for the next update
- Ask whether the update is necessary. If you cannot name the information need, wait.
- Select the least distressing format that will answer it. Try written or audio reporting before graphic video when visuals are overwhelming.
- Use a credible, contextual source. Avoid relying on an unmoderated feed for routine monitoring.
- Set the boundary before opening the report. Choose the check-in window and turn off nonessential alerts.
- Watch for your own response. Racing heart, sweating, faster breathing or feeling overwhelmed are cues to stop.
- Recover on purpose. Close the feed and return to movement, a hobby, supportive people and ordinary routines.
- Escalate support when needed. Persistent, impairing or severe distress warrants professional advice, regardless of how much coverage you think you have consumed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to stop following war news entirely?
No. The APA recommends limiting the amount and kinds of news you consume, not abandoning all information. Define what you need to know, use credible contextual reporting and stop when your question is answered.
Is reading safer than watching video?
Reading or listening may be less distressing for some people because they remove or reduce visual exposure. Text and audio can still contain upsetting descriptions, so choose the format that fits your response and pause when needed.
How many minutes of war coverage are safe?
No reviewed source establishes a universally safe number of minutes or daily check-ins. Use deliberate windows, your responsibilities and your own warning signs to set boundaries.
