To make a newly added video play earlier in a YouTube playlist used for a 24/7 rotation, set the playlist’s order to Manual in YouTube Studio, then drag the video to the first position—or wherever you want it in the sequence. For repeatable changes, the YouTube Data API can set a playlist item’s zero-based position. YouTube does not document a built-in rule that automatically promotes each new upload in a separate 24/7 rotation, so plan on manual upkeep or separately verified automation.
Move a new video to the front in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and go to the playlist you use for the rotation.

Set the playlist’s ordering to Manual. YouTube’s playlist-management instructions describe reordering items by dragging them into position: Manage playlists in YouTube Studio.

Add the new video to the playlist if it is not already there.

Drag the video to the first position, or to the specific place you want it to play. If your policy is “newest first,” apply it consistently; each new priority video will push the others farther down the sequence.

Check that your 24/7 playback setup actually uses this playlist or the sequence you maintain. A channel playlist’s order does not guarantee that an external player or hosted stream will read it automatically.

Automate position changes with the YouTube Data API
If you have developer capacity and authorized API access, you can update a playlist item’s position instead of dragging it by hand. The position is zero-based: position 0 is first, position 1 is second, and so on.

List the playlist items and identify the item to move. Keep its playlist item ID; this is distinct from the video ID.

Verify the resulting order in the playlist and confirm that your actual stream’s playback path follows that maintained sequence.
Google for Developers’ current documentation, retrieved in 2026, reports a quota impact of 50 units for each playlistItems.update request. That is the API operation’s quota cost, not a recommendation about how often to reorder videos. See YouTube Data API quota costs.

Understand which “playlist” controls what
A YouTube video playlist is an ordered collection; its item positions determine its sequence. A YouTube live broadcast is an event, while a live stream carries the audio-video feed from an encoder. These are separate parts of the system: changing a video playlist does not, by itself, change or restart the encoder feed. YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview and broadcast and stream workflow describe broadcast and stream management.
An HLS media playlist is different again: it is a segment manifest used to deliver a live feed, not the YouTube collection of full videos whose order you are editing. YouTube’s guidance on delivering live content via HLS concerns stream delivery, not promoting videos in a channel playlist.
Choose a method that matches your workflow

Will YouTube automatically put each new upload first?
Do not assume so. The official YouTube playlist and API documentation describes ordering and ways to change an item’s position; it does not describe an automatic rule that promotes every newly uploaded video in a separate 24/7 rotation. Use a person to maintain the order, or choose custom automation only after verifying that it detects new uploads and changes the correct playlist sequence.
