Pakistan’s selection committee has reportedly chosen Mohammed Ali “Mo” Naqvi’s documentary Hanging by a Wire as the country’s entry for the 99th Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. Contemporary reports describe it as the first documentary selected to represent Pakistan in the category. That committee choice is not confirmation that the Academy has found the film eligible.
What Pakistan selected
Dawn reported on October 2, 2026, that Pakistan’s Academy Selection Committee had selected Hanging by a Wire for the 99th Oscars’ International Feature Film category. Geo News reported that Deputy Chairperson Sana Zahra Jafri announced the choice on October 1 at a premiere during Canada’s Mosaic International Film Festival.
Both reports call it the first documentary selected to represent Pakistan in the category. That “first” describes the country’s reported selection history; it does not mean the film has already advanced in the Academy’s competition.
What the documentary is about
Hanging by a Wire is directed by Mohammed Ali “Mo” Naqvi, who also wrote and produced it with Bilal Sami, according to Dawn. Geo News describes the film as a documentary about the August 2023 cable-car emergency in Battagram, Pakistan. It reports that eight passengers, including seven schoolboys, were left suspended after a cable snapped. The film uses eyewitness footage, survivor testimony and cinematic reconstructions, the outlet says.

Geo News also reports that the documentary premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition and later screened at Tribeca. Those festival appearances do not, by themselves, establish an Academy qualification through the festival-award route.
Does selection mean the film is eligible for an Oscar?
No. A country committee’s selection and the Academy’s eligibility review are separate steps. The Academy’s 99th Oscars rules state that administrators review submission materials and that the International Feature Film category’s Executive Committee resolves eligibility questions under Rule Sixteen. The available reporting establishes Pakistan’s reported choice, not an Academy finding that this film is eligible, shortlisted or nominated.

How a film can enter the International Feature Film category
The Academy’s 99th Oscars FAQ describes two routes for a non-English-language film to be submitted:
| Route | Who submits or qualifies | What is required |
|---|---|---|
| Official country or region selection | A country or region submits one film through an approved selection committee. | The committee selects the country’s official entry; the Academy then conducts its separate review. |
| Festival-award route | A film may qualify after winning a specified award at one of the festivals named in the FAQ. | The qualifying award must be won at Berlin, Busan, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto or Venice before September 30, 2026. Festival participation or a screening alone is not enough. |
For Hanging by a Wire, the reported Pakistan committee selection is the route relevant to the current announcement. Although Geo News reports a Sundance premiere, the Academy’s alternative route requires a qualifying award, not simply a premiere or festival screening.
