First determine whether the audio is offset by a nearly constant amount from the start or drifts farther out of sync over time. A fixed offset calls for measured alignment; growing drift calls for checking timestamps and clock behavior, and may justify FFmpeg’s audio resampling compensation. There is no universal sync flag—and the available official guidance does not identify an Azure VM as the cause.
Classify the sync problem before changing FFmpeg
Compare audio and video at the beginning and later in the stream or a local recording. Note the approximate offset at both points:
- Nearly constant offset: one track starts early or late. Measure the offset and align the relevant input or track.
- Offset grows over time: investigate timestamp progression, clock drift, and unequal track timing. A one-time delay cannot reliably correct a changing mismatch.
An FFmpeg-user discussion about YouTube Live describes audio and video routed to separate outputs and reports that the observed delay varied between runs. That is a reason to measure your own case, not to apply a delay value from someone else’s setup. FFmpeg-user discussion.
Inspect the inputs, outputs, and FFmpeg build
Record the version and inspect media timing
On the VM, record the installed version with ffmpeg -version and confirm the installed build supports any filter or option you plan to use. Inspect the source and, if available, a local output or archive:

Compare the audio and video start times, durations, time bases, and timestamp progression. If the source tracks already have unequal durations or suspect timing, address that before treating the VM as the source of the problem. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, local archive, CPU load, and outbound connection when troubleshooting a live stream. YouTube Help: Fix live stream problems.
Check whether your outputs share a timeline
If FFmpeg sends the video and audio to separate devices or sinks, those outputs may buffer and schedule playback independently. If the goal is a synchronized encoded stream and the architecture permits it, keep the media on a common timestamp timeline and mux audio and video into one output. A pair of separate playback devices is not equivalent to one synchronized muxed output.

Fix gradual drift with timestamp-aware audio compensation
When measurements show continuing drift and the audio timestamps are a reliable reference, test FFmpeg’s aresample compensation. For example:
ffmpeg -i INPUT -af aresample=async=1000 OUTPUT
This is an example to test, not a universal setting. The async value sets the maximum amount, in samples per second, by which audio can be stretched or squeezed to match timestamps. Compensation is disabled by default; the FFmpeg Resampler Documentation states, “Default value is 0, thus no compensation is applied to make the samples match the audio timestamps.” FFmpeg Resampler Documentation.

Compare the adjusted output against the source timestamps and local recording. Choose an adjustment rate based on measured behavior, and verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports the filter. Resampling compensation cannot repair every bad timestamp source or independent-output scheduling problem.
Align a constant offset at the start
If the offset is already present at the beginning and stays about the same, measure which track leads and by how much. Then correct the timing of the relevant input or use an appropriate audio/video delay filter in your particular command. The right filter and sign depend on which stream is early, how the inputs are arranged, and whether timestamps are preserved; the title alone does not establish those details, so there is no responsible one-size-fits-all command.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
FFmpeg’s resampler option first_pts can pad or trim at stream start when the expected first timestamp is known. It addresses initial alignment, not ongoing clock drift. See the FFmpeg Resampler Documentation for its behavior and options.
Use timestamp and output-sync options deliberately
FFmpeg output synchronization modes and the chosen muxer can affect timestamps. Do not treat -copyts or a frame-rate mode as a general sync fix: copying timestamps or changing frame-rate handling does not make incorrect input timing correct. Preserve timestamps or alter output timing only when you understand the source timeline and the desired output behavior. See FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Validate YouTube ingest and locate where sync breaks
Check the stream and a local recording
- Use representative audio and motion in a test stream; a static image or silence may conceal timing issues.
- Compare the FFmpeg local archive with the YouTube preview and stream-health information.
- If the archive is already out of sync, focus on the source timestamps and FFmpeg processing.
- If the archive is clean but viewers report a mismatch, investigate the publishing path, stream health, network, and playback conditions.
- Review encoder errors and CPU load, and test outbound connectivity as part of troubleshooting—not as proof that Azure networking or VM load caused this particular defect.
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of 4 seconds; for audio it recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. These are ingest recommendations, not evidence that the source timestamps are correct. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Common failure patterns and what to check
- A delay filter helps one run but not another: remeasure the offset on each run. The mismatch may be variable drift rather than a fixed shift.
- Sync worsens after enabling resampling: check whether the timestamps are trustworthy and whether the adjustment rate suits the measured drift;
asyncis not a generic correction value. - The archive is clean but live playback is not: investigate the publishing path and YouTube stream health before changing source timing.
- Only separate devices are out of sync: check each sink’s buffering and scheduling; for synchronized encoded delivery, consider a common-timeline muxed output.
- A timestamp or frame-rate option changes the symptom: inspect the resulting timestamps and muxer behavior rather than assuming the option corrected the underlying source.
