To prevent avoidable silence between bhajans, configure the automation to fall back to valid audio when a playlist or live source becomes unavailable, and check that the song files themselves do not contain quiet at their beginnings or ends. In Liquidsoap, that means using a fallback source with an emergency audio file—not relying on mksafe, which keeps output going by supplying silence.
First find where the silence starts
A continuous stream has distinct stages: a generator prepares and outputs audio, a streaming server ingests and distributes it, and a listener’s player receives and plays it. Check each stage before changing settings. If only one transition has a pause, the quiet may be in that recording; if all audio disappears, the source, automation process, server ingest, or listener playback may be involved. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart describes these components, but does not diagnose a particular broadcaster’s platform or setup. Liquidsoap Quickstart (2.5.x)
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
- A pause at every song change: inspect the files for leading or trailing quiet and check how the automation prepares and switches tracks. The official references do not establish a universal gapless-playback setting.
- Only certain tracks stop or fail: validate those audio files and their playlist paths. Liquidsoap notes that a playlist can be fallible when files are invalid or a valid file cannot be prepared in time.
- The stream goes quiet when live input disconnects: configure the live source and playlist as fallback branches, with emergency audio behind them.
- The automation appears to run, but listeners hear nothing: check generator output, server ingestion, and player compatibility separately.
Make the playlist failure-safe with emergency audio
Liquidsoap’s Quickstart demonstrates this pattern: fallback([your_fallible_source_here, single("failure.ogg")]). Replace the example source and filename with your actual playlist source and a valid, accessible local audio file. A short, licensed bhajan or station identification recording may be appropriate, depending on your editorial policy.
The fallback can switch to the emergency file when the playlist source is unavailable. The fallback file must itself be valid and accessible. This protects against source failure; it cannot repair a stopped Liquidsoap process, a failed server, a broken network path, or a listener-side problem. Liquidsoap Quickstart (2.5.x)

Why mksafe is not a dead-air fix
Liquidsoap’s Quickstart explains that mksafe makes a source infallible by streaming silence when its input becomes unavailable. That can prevent the output source from failing, but it does not give listeners music during the failure. If your goal is to avoid audible dead air, provide a real audio fallback instead.
Keep recorded bhajans behind a live input
If the stream alternates between a live source and recorded programming, combine the sources so the playlist takes over when the live client disconnects. Liquidsoap’s cookbook shows a fallback arrangement with live input, playlist, and emergency audio in that priority order: fallback(track_sensitive=false, [live, playlist, emergency]). In that arrangement, live audio has priority, the playlist is the next option, and emergency audio is last. The input.harbor source is available only while a source client is connected; the documented example returns to the playlist after disconnect.

Do not add a silent reconnect delay by default
The cookbook includes an optional five-second silence when transitioning out of live input, as a way to give an unstable live client time to reconnect. That is a specific recovery tactic, not a general fix for gaps between recorded songs. It deliberately creates silence, so use it only if the reconnect behavior justifies that tradeoff. Check file quiet and player compatibility separately
Inspect the recordings
When gaps occur only at particular song boundaries, listen to the start and end of the affected files and check whether quiet is already encoded there. A source fallback cannot remove silence that is part of a playable track. The reviewed Liquidsoap documentation covers source composition and fallback, not a guaranteed way to make every transition gapless.
Choose an output format for your listeners
The encoding guide says the output encoder controls codec, bitrate, channels, and other details. Choose a format supported by the players your audience uses; the guide describes MP3 as broadly compatible and notes Opus and Vorbis support in modern browsers. Codec choice may address playback incompatibility, but the guide does not claim that changing codecs eliminates playlist gaps. Liquidsoap encoding guide (2.5.x)

Keeps a source infallible by supplying silence when its input disappears. | Output continues, but listeners still hear silence. |
| Fallback to emergency audio | Switches from an unavailable source to a valid security file. | Requires a prepared, accessible fallback file; does not recover a stopped process or server. |
| Live input plus playlist fallback | Prioritizes live audio, then uses playlist audio when the live client disconnects; emergency audio can be a further fallback. | Requires source priority and transition behavior suited to the broadcast. |
| Short transition silence | Can give an unstable live client time to reconnect in the documented cookbook example. | Intentionally adds silence and is not a general remedy for recorded-song gaps. |
Troubleshoot in this order
- Establish the pattern. Check whether silence is in every transition, limited to certain tracks, follows a live disconnect, or affects all output.
- Validate the affected media and paths. Confirm playlist entries point to valid files and that the automation can access them in time.
- Test the emergency branch. Confirm the fallback file is a real, playable audio file at an accessible location, then verify that the fallback selects it when the main source is unavailable.
- Check live-source behavior. If using
input.harbor, confirm the client connection and test that the playlist resumes after disconnection. - Trace any full-output silence downstream. Check generator output, server ingestion, and listener-player compatibility as separate points in the chain.
- Match codec to listener support only when relevant. Use encoding changes to address compatibility, not as a presumed fix for source timing or gaps.
