To stop OBS music from clipping, lower the level at the earliest controllable point, then put an OBS Limiter last in that music source’s filter chain as a peak-safety net. Test and listen to a recording of the actual loop before going live. Changing YouTube’s audio bitrate does not fix an overloaded source.
Find where the music is clipping
Trace the audio from playback to OBS rather than immediately turning down the final output. Lowering a later stage can make the meter smaller without undoing distortion already introduced upstream.
- If the loop plays in a browser or media player: lower that application’s output first, then check the operating system’s volume mixer.
- If OBS captures desktop audio: check the desktop output and the corresponding OBS desktop-audio source.
- If the video is an OBS Media Source or another individual source: lower that source’s own volume control.
- Compare the sound at the player and in OBS: monitor the source and make a short local recording. This helps distinguish distortion already present in playback from a problem later in the chain.
OBS recommends checking levels at the device or application and listening again as the sound reaches OBS. Keep the playback route simple enough to identify which mixer meter represents the music. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Use the OBS meter to check peaks
Test the loudest material
Play the loudest passage in the loop, not only a quiet opening. Watch the music source’s peak meter and its peak-hold indicator; the current OBS Mixer Guide says the indicator retains the loudest value for 20 seconds. Background music should generally stay in the green area, but meter colors are not a universal loudness target.

Leave headroom below digital clipping
Digital audio clips when its level exceeds the available ceiling. OBS explains that, although its internal processing uses floating point, audio in a final recording or stream must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping and distortion. Its technical guide gives -20 dBFS as the Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as the Permitted Maximum Level, with the latter allowing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. Treat these as OBS meter conventions and conservative headroom guidance, not as a required integrated LUFS target for music. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
If the music reaches the red area or the digital ceiling, reduce the source level before adding output gain. OBS notes that its input-level indicators are positioned before the volume fader but behind source filters, so what the meter shows depends on where it sits in the signal chain.

Add an OBS Limiter last
- In OBS, open Filters for the music source.
- Add a Limiter filter.
- Move the Limiter to the end of the source’s filter chain, after any compressor or other processing.
- Start with OBS’s documented default threshold of -6.00 dB, adjusting only if your setup requires it.
- Listen to a test recording. If the limiter audibly pumps or distorts, lower the source level rather than letting the limiter work constantly.
OBS describes the Limiter as a way to prevent a signal peaking above 0 dB and causing clipping. The -6.00 dB threshold is the filter’s documented default, not a mandatory setting for every broadcast. A limiter cannot repair clipping already baked into a music file or introduced by a browser, system output, or earlier hardware stage. OBS Limiter Filter
Use compression only for a specific need
A compressor reduces louder portions to make dynamic changes less pronounced. OBS typically places compression near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain or ducking mode can use a microphone source to lower desktop audio while someone speaks.

For unattended looping music, compression is not required just to prevent clipping. If you do use it, keep the Limiter last: gain added after compression can raise peaks again, and compression alone is not a hard safety ceiling. OBS Compressor Filter
Record and listen to the whole loop before broadcasting
- Run the same playback source, volume, and OBS filters planned for the live broadcast.
- Record a representative test that includes the loudest passages, transitions between videos, and the loop restart.
- Listen to the recording—not just the meters—and check for distortion, pumping, abrupt level changes, or a clipped passage.
- If you can, rehearse privately or unlisted and check YouTube’s stream health once live.
OBS encourages testing and listening to a normal recording before going live. YouTube recommends tests with audio and video movement similar to the intended stream, and advises monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube live encoder settings

Do not confuse bitrate with input level
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo in advanced settings, along with a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Those are encoding settings; increasing the bitrate does not lower a source peak or undo clipping. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

A clean signal does not establish permission to broadcast the music. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream to avoid problems such as copyright strikes. A video being publicly playable or suitable for looping does not, by itself, grant live-stream rights. YouTube for Artists
