Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To reduce OBS CPU usage during a continuous YouTube playlist stream, first identify whether the load comes from software encoding, rendering, or the playlist source. Check OBS’s Stats window, then change one thing at a time: try a compatible hardware encoder, lower output frame rate or resolution if acceptable, and simplify the scene. The right fix depends on how the playlist enters OBS and on your computer; there is no single setting that reliably fixes every setup.
Find out what is using the CPU
System CPU percentage alone does not show whether OBS is struggling to encode frames, render the scene, or simply running a demanding source. Compare the computer’s load in three states: OBS idle, the playlist playing, and the stream running. In OBS, open View → Stats and note encoding lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames. Also record the active streaming encoder, output resolution and frame rate, operating system, and how the playlist is brought into OBS.
- Encoding lag: points toward work required to encode the outgoing stream. Check the selected encoder and output settings.
- Rendering lag: points toward OBS having difficulty composing the scene. Check sources, filters, and browser content.
- Dropped frames: can have a network cause as well as a system-performance cause. Check YouTube’s stream health and upload connection rather than treating every dropped-frame warning as a CPU problem.
OBS says CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The playlist method matters too: an embedded YouTube page in a Browser Source, a local video played by a Media or VLC source, and desktop capture are different workloads and do not necessarily behave alike. OBS system requirements
Reduce the work required to encode
Try a compatible hardware encoder
In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the streaming encoder. If the current encoder is x264, which uses the CPU for software encoding, try a hardware encoder offered by your system—such as NVENC, AMF, QSV, or VideoToolbox—then run a test and compare the Stats window. Modern hardware encoders shift encoding work to specialized hardware, which can reduce CPU demand. Availability and support vary by GPU, operating system, drivers, and encoder.

On Apple Silicon Macs, OBS documents VideoToolbox for streaming. OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported on Intel Macs because most streaming services require constant bitrate; its guidance for those systems is to use x264. Check the encoder choices on your own machine rather than assuming a particular option is available. OBS hardware encoding guide
Lower frame rate or output resolution if needed
If encoding or rendering remains overloaded, reduce the stream’s output frame rate or resolution to a level that suits the documentary and its audience. When 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. A lower frame rate means fewer frames to render and encode; reducing resolution can also reduce workload, but changes the image viewers receive. OBS describes lowering the base canvas resolution as a more disruptive step for severe resource constraints, so begin with output settings and test before changing the canvas.

Do not treat a bitrate reduction by itself as a CPU fix: bitrate governs the amount of encoded data sent, not whether OBS uses x264 or a hardware encoder. YouTube’s live settings page gives H.264 recommended bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; follow its table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. The page does not display a publication date. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Simplify the scene OBS has to render
Remove sources the continuous stream does not need, and temporarily disable filters to see whether one is responsible for the load. If a filter is necessary, apply it to the smallest appropriate source rather than processing the entire scene. Use media close to the output dimensions instead of unnecessarily oversized files, and consider keeping large, unrelated scene collections separate.

OBS notes that sources may consume resources even when they are not visible, and that Browser Sources can be resource intensive. Disable or remove sources that are not needed for the playlist stream; judge the result using the same test content and stream settings. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
Check how the playlist enters OBS
Do not switch source types on the assumption that one is always lighter: a change can alter playback behavior as well as resource use. Identify whether you are using a Browser Source, Media or VLC Source, or display/window capture, then compare CPU and OBS Stats with representative playlist content.

If the playlist uses a Browser Source
Set the Browser Source width and height to the smallest dimensions that still show the content properly. If the source does not need a high refresh rate, test a lower custom frame rate. OBS also documents an option to shut down a browser source when it is not visible; that can help when it is used only in some scenes. A YouTube page embedded in a Browser Source is not equivalent to a local media playlist, so changing to a local source may not preserve the same playlist behavior.
If the playlist is local media or a static overlay
For local audio or video, OBS suggests using a Media Source or VLC Video Source where suitable; use an Image Source for a static image. This is a source choice to test against your current setup, not a guarantee of lower CPU use. Keep only the sources and effects needed for the broadcast. OBS Browser Source guide

Test the complete stream before leaving it running
- Establish a baseline. Record the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU use, and OBS Stats with the playlist playing.
- Change one setting. For example, switch to a compatible hardware encoder or reduce frame rate; do not change several settings at once if you want to know which one helped.
- Test representative content. Include the playlist’s typical motion and audio, then check encoding lag, rendering lag, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health.
- Observe a longer run. For a continuous broadcast, leave the test running long enough to encounter normal playlist transitions and any recurring load. This is prudent operational advice, not a YouTube- or OBS-specified minimum test duration.
- Keep the change only if the trade-off is acceptable. Compare CPU and OBS warnings alongside playback smoothness and viewer-facing quality.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can be a starting point, but test the actual scene and playlist before relying on its settings. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, running a test, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Available formats depend on the ingest protocol and encoder. These delivery settings support compatibility; they do not, by themselves, establish a CPU reduction. YouTube says it transcodes live streams for different viewer formats. YouTube live encoder settings OBS troubleshooting guide
Common problems and what to check
- CPU stays high after switching encoders: confirm that the streaming encoder actually changed in Settings → Output. If it did, check rendering lag and scene sources; the encoder may not be the bottleneck.
- CPU is high before going live: compare OBS idle with the playlist playing. A Browser Source, oversized media, filters, or sources that remain active off-screen may be contributing.
- The stream looks less smooth after lowering settings: restore the prior frame rate or resolution if the change harms the content, then test a hardware encoder or simplify the scene instead.
- Dropped frames continue despite lower CPU use: check YouTube stream health and upload reliability. CPU load and network delivery are separate potential causes.
- The hardware encoder is missing or behaves differently: support depends on the computer’s hardware, operating system, and software environment. Use an encoder actually offered by OBS on that system and validate it with a test stream.
When an upgrade is worth considering
Before buying hardware, check whether your existing graphics card or integrated graphics already provides a compatible encoder, and establish that encoding—not browser rendering, filters, or another source—is the bottleneck. A compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work away from the CPU, but the benefit depends on the machine and workload; the available guidance does not establish a particular model or guaranteed improvement.
