How to Prevent a Cloud Server from Sleeping During a YouTube 24/7 Stream

A YouTube stream can stop while its VM is still running—or the VM itself may have been stopped by a schedule, runtime limit, or interruption. Diagnose the right layer before changing settings.

If a YouTube 24/7 stream stops, first find out whether the cloud VM stopped or only the encoder did. A running VM can still lose its encoder process or YouTube connection; a stopped VM points instead to a schedule, runtime limit, shutdown automation, or another provider-side event. Check the failure layer before changing settings: a keep-alive request is not a general way to override a cloud provider’s stop policy.

Identify what actually stopped

Check the VM’s state at the time the broadcast went dark, then compare it with the encoder and YouTube stream status. The distinction determines the fix.

What you observe Likely area to investigate Next check
VM is running, but YouTube stopped receiving video Encoder process, encoder logs, network path, or ingest settings Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key.
VM is stopped Instance schedule, runtime limit, shutdown automation, account or project policy, or interruption Review the provider’s event history and all configured lifecycle controls.
VM and encoder appear active, but video is not arriving reliably Connection stability, encoder reconnect behavior, bitrate, or YouTube ingest health Check encoder logs and connection status; for OBS, dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.

YouTube’s encoder workflow sends video from an encoder to YouTube using the Live Control Room stream URL and stream key. A VM is just one place to run that encoder. YouTube says a stream ends when the encoder stops sending content, so a live watch page or a running VM alone does not establish that video is still being transmitted. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.

Check cloud-side schedules and runtime limits

Google Compute Engine

If the VM is a Google Compute Engine instance, inspect whether an instance schedule is attached. Google’s schedules use a resource policy to automate starting and stopping VMs; scheduled operations may begin up to 15 minutes after the scheduled time. This is a reason to check for a configured schedule, not evidence that an ordinary Compute Engine VM automatically sleeps when idle. See Google’s instance scheduling documentation.

Also check whether a runtime limit was configured. Compute Engine runtime limits can stop or delete a VM; Google documents a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 120 days. Google also notes that VMs may be interrupted for other reasons, including user requests or host events. Confirm the provisioning model and settings before treating the VM as suitable for an unattended, continuous workload. See Google’s runtime-limit documentation.

Do not apply Cloud Workstations keep-alive advice to ordinary VMs

Google Cloud Workstations is a separate product with its own idle-shutdown behavior. Google documents a keep-alive script, /google/scripts/keep_alive.sh, and background workstation.Start calls for that Workstations use case. Those instructions do not establish a way to prevent a general Compute Engine VM from stopping. See Google’s Workstations idle-timeout documentation.

AWS EC2

For EC2, distinguish an idle instance from a stopped one. AWS says a running instance is billed for instance usage even when idle and nobody connects; instance usage is not billed while it is stopped, though attached EBS storage and other resources can still incur charges. See AWS’s instance lifecycle documentation.

Do not use stop-and-start as an assumed harmless recovery method. AWS says a restarted EC2 instance receives a new public IPv4 address in most cases unless it uses an Elastic IP or a qualifying network configuration. Auto Scaling may also treat a non-running instance as unhealthy and replace it. Check network configuration and orchestration before relying on stop/start recovery. See AWS’s stop-and-start documentation.

Other providers and provisioning types

Names, controls, and interruption behavior vary by cloud provider and VM product. Look for lifecycle schedules, maximum runtime settings, shutdown automation, orchestration policies, and whether the capacity is interruptible. Change only a confirmed setting that conflicts with continuous streaming; do not assume a universal idle-timeout setting or keep-alive command exists.

Keep the encoder process recoverable

If the VM remains running when video stops, investigate the encoder before changing VM lifecycle settings. Review its logs and process state, then run it under an operating-system service supervisor configured to restart it after a process failure. The exact service definition depends on the OS, encoder, and provider; without those details, a copy-paste command could be wrong.

  1. Check the VM state and timestamp of the interruption.
  2. If the VM is running, inspect the encoder process and logs for exits, connection failures, or rejected ingest settings.
  3. Configure a service supervisor to restart the encoder after failure, using the instructions for your specific operating system and encoder.
  4. Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key and is actively sending content.
  5. Test a controlled encoder-process restart and a VM reboot, then verify that the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives video. Perform the test before relying on unattended operation.

Process supervision addresses encoder failure; it does not restart a stopped VM or override a provider’s schedule, runtime limit, or interruption. Those require separate provider-side review and, where appropriate, recovery automation.

Verify YouTube ingest and protect the stream key

In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the intended broadcast in the encoder. Confirm the encoder is sending to that destination and that YouTube shows incoming video. Treat the key as a secret: do not place it in public logs, screenshots, or shared configuration. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube’s instructions state: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That makes incoming transmission—not merely whether the watch page exists—the signal to verify when diagnosing a dark broadcast. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single broadcast will be archived continuously beyond that limit. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

OBS is encoder software, not a cloud-server keep-alive mechanism. OBS connects from the computer where it runs to the streaming destination; its help explains that dropped frames may reflect an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See OBS’s dropped-frames guide.

Monitor the three layers and plan recovery

  • VM state: Alert on stop, restart, deletion, or provider lifecycle events. Check provider event and activity history after an interruption.
  • Encoder process: Monitor that the process is running and capture logs so an exit or reconnect loop is diagnosable.
  • YouTube stream health: Confirm that YouTube is receiving content, not just that the VM and encoder appear active.
  • Credentials and network: Keep the stream key restricted and verify that the encoder can reach the YouTube ingest endpoint after restarts.
  • Recovery layer: Separate process restart from VM restart or recreation, and both from backup or failover. They address different failure modes and do not guarantee uninterrupted video.

For a continuous workload, compare standard versus interruptible capacity, machine and encoder resource needs, storage and IP costs, monitoring, patching, and the recovery work you can maintain. No universal VM size, provider, command, price, or downtime guarantee applies across cloud setups.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Possible cause What to do
VM is off at the same time each day An attached instance schedule or shutdown automation Inspect schedules and automation history; change the confirmed action that conflicts with the stream.
VM stops after a fixed duration A configured runtime limit or provisioning policy Review runtime-limit and capacity settings; confirm the VM type is intended for long-running service.
VM is running, but broadcast ends Encoder exited or stopped transmitting Inspect logs and process state, supervise the encoder with an appropriate restart policy, and confirm YouTube receives video.
Video drops or becomes unreliable while the VM stays up Network instability, unsustainable bitrate, or encoder reconnect trouble Review encoder connection diagnostics and set a bitrate the available connection can sustain.
Restarted EC2 VM is unreachable at the old address Its public IPv4 address changed during stop/start Check the current address and use an Elastic IP or qualifying network configuration if a stable address is required.
VM keeps returning to a stopped or replaced state Provider orchestration or Auto Scaling behavior Inspect orchestration and health policies before adding a separate restart mechanism.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids keeping a user-managed VM and encoder running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
