Prepare the slideshow as a video first, then send that video to YouTube Live through an encoder such as OBS Studio. For a dependable continuous broadcast, standardize the image canvas, review the entire sequence and its loop point, choose YouTube-compatible stream settings, and test the full setup before leaving it live.
1. Build and review the slideshow video
Set a consistent frame
Choose an output aspect ratio and canvas before arranging images. A 16:9 output is a useful target for YouTube playback and can help avoid black bars. Use square pixels; for SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 color. These are output targets, not requirements for a particular editing program.
Arrange images in the intended order, choose how long each stays on screen, and decide whether to use transitions, titles, music, or narration. Use only images and audio you have permission to broadcast. The official live-ingestion guidance does not require a particular slideshow application, local video container, or slideshow duration.
Export and inspect the actual result
Render a continuous video that your encoder can play or capture, then preview that rendered video rather than relying only on the source images. Check for cropping, letterboxing, scaling artifacts, hard-to-read text, and abrupt transitions. Pay particular attention to the end-to-start loop: the last image should return to the first without an unwanted pause or visual jump. If the stream should be silent, verify that no unintended audio is present; if it includes music or narration, listen to the rendered track.

2. Choose the live encoder and stream settings
Use RTMPS for a routine OBS setup
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. It is RTMP tunneled through SSL; YouTube’s technical guide specifies the RTMPS protocol and port 443. In OBS Studio, use the current YouTube connection workflow and the service and stream-key values shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. OBS’s community-maintained setup guide may not match every current interface label, so follow the labels in your installed version and YouTube Studio if they differ: OBS Project’s YouTube setup guide.
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the current key and connection details in the Live Control Room rather than copying credentials from an old setup.

Match output settings to the connection
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, which should not exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and square pixels. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 stereo audio; its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps at a 44.1 KHz sample rate. Consult the YouTube encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations for the full current table.
For mostly still images, 30 fps is a reasonable starting choice; it is an editorial suggestion, not a YouTube requirement. Select a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain consistently. The following are YouTube-published recommendations, not independent performance measurements; YouTube’s page was checked on 2026-10-03, and its recommendations can change.

These are encoder recommendations from YouTube, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or computer will deliver them reliably. Run a speed test, allow headroom rather than using all available upload capacity, and test with the same resolution, frame rate, visuals, and audio you intend to use live.
When HLS is relevant
HLS is a separate, more specialized ingestion path—not a slideshow file format. YouTube describes it for premium content where high quality and resolution are needed and relatively higher latency is acceptable. Its requirements include muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, and media playlists with short media segments sent to the HLS endpoint. For a basic OBS slideshow stream, RTMPS is the simpler documented starting point. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide if you are configuring an encoder specifically for HLS.

3. Connect OBS Studio to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel access. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is enabled and that the Live Control Room accepts the broadcast configuration you plan to use. Eligibility and interface steps can change, so check your own account.
- Prepare the source. Make the completed slideshow video available to OBS using a suitable playback or capture source. Confirm that it plays from beginning to end, and that it repeats if continuous looping is part of your setup.
- Set output and encoding. In OBS, configure the output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval to match your chosen YouTube-compatible settings. Configure the audio track to match the video: verify that it is genuinely silent if intended to be silent.
- Connect the channel. In OBS’s current YouTube service workflow, connect the account or enter the stream key shown in the Live Control Room. Keep the key private. The precise labels can vary with OBS and YouTube interface changes.
- Run a realistic test. Start a test broadcast or otherwise test the intended configuration before relying on the stream. Check YouTube’s preview and status feedback while OBS is sending video. Verify framing, audio, playback, and the first-to-last loop transition.
- Start the broadcast and watch its health. Once the test is satisfactory, start the live broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the public playback at the quality viewers are likely to use. YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple output formats for viewers.
4. Plan for continuous operation
A 24/7 stream is not just a long video file: the encoder, video source, power, and internet connection all need to remain available, and someone needs a way to notice failures. Plan how the computer and connection will stay on, how the slideshow will keep looping, and who will respond if the broadcast stops. The sources do not establish a minimum computer specification for this use; match the machine and encoder to the output you want and test them under realistic conditions.
- Test the entire sequence, including the loop point and any audio, before leaving it unattended.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and YouTube for buffering or other stream-health warnings during the test.
- Confirm that the video source does not pause, sleep, or end after one pass if you expect a continuous loop.
- Plan how you will detect an internet, power, or encoder interruption. A test cannot guarantee that a long-running stream will never fail.
5. Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube shows a poor connection or buffering
Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the upload connection can sustain, then run another realistic test. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators rather than assuming a single speed-test result proves a continuous connection will hold.

The picture has black bars, cropping, or unreadable text
Check that the images and output canvas use the intended aspect ratio, then inspect the rendered video and YouTube preview. Adjust the image fit or crop in the slideshow project and render it again; do not assume the source images will fit the output frame automatically.
The slideshow stops instead of looping
Check whether the playback source or media player is set to repeat and whether the encoder scene remains active. Test past the end of the video and watch the return to the first frame before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
The stream has unexpected silence or audio
Inspect the rendered video and OBS audio meters and sources. Remove unintended audio capture if the presentation should be silent; if sound is intended, confirm the selected audio source and track are active and that the soundtrack is authorized for broadcast.
YouTube does not accept the stream key or connection
Recheck the current stream key and connection settings in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then update OBS. Keep credentials private and avoid relying on a saved key from a previous configuration if YouTube is showing different current details.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer or connection to carry the stream around the clock, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the slideshow video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off while it runs; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
