Start by checking OBS’s Stats dock: rising Network Dropped Frames point to a connection or ingest-path problem; rising Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag point to system-performance limits. Fix the branch that matches the counter rather than lowering random settings. Viewer buffering is a separate problem and can happen even when your broadcast is clean.
How to diagnose the problem in OBS
In OBS Studio, open View > Docks > Stats and watch the counters during a representative test. OBS distinguishes frames discarded because the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate from performance trouble rendering or encoding the stream. The first is usually outside OBS itself; the second means OBS may not have enough system resources to produce frames on time. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explain these separate failure modes.
- Network Dropped Frames rise: follow the network checks below.
- Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag rise: follow the performance checks below.
- OBS counters stay healthy but viewers report buffering: investigate viewer-side playback and accessibility; do not assume your encoder is dropping frames.
Run the test with the scene, game or video motion, audio, and encoder settings you expect to use live. A static desktop test may not reveal the load of a fast-moving game, animated overlays, or multiple browser sources.
How do I fix dropped frames in OBS?
If the network-drop counter increases, compare your configured bitrate with upload capacity that remains stable over time and with the platform’s ingest limits. A speed-test peak is not a guarantee of sustained upload performance. OBS describes 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate planning, not a promise that every connection can sustain that rate continuously. Leave headroom for normal fluctuations and other household or office traffic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level. Keep the stream within the destination platform’s current limits and your stable upload capacity. If drops stop after lowering bitrate, the prior setting may have exceeded what the connection or route could sustain.
- Try another ingest server. A poor route to one server can cause problems despite otherwise adequate internet service. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as one way to compare server quality scores; verify that tool’s availability and current suitability before relying on it.
- Compare destinations if practical. Testing a different streaming service can help distinguish a service-specific route issue from a broader connection problem. It is diagnostic, not a fix by itself.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Use equipment you already have before buying anything; wired connectivity will not resolve every router, ISP, congestion, or routing issue.
- Check software that manages or filters traffic. VPNs, security tools, or bundled network optimization features can interfere. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples. Test with suspected interference disabled, then restore appropriate security protection.
- Update network drivers and restart network equipment. Look for current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. Restart the modem and router if there may be a connectivity issue.
- Ask your ISP if the issue persists. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be outside your control; replacing hardware without diagnosing the cause may not help.
OBS offers dynamic bitrate as a fallback that can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce interruptions, but does not repair the underlying connection and can lower picture quality. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
What does “encoding overloaded” mean?
Rendering and encoding lag indicate that OBS or the system is struggling to render scenes or encode frames on time. OBS relies on GPU resources for compositing and rendering, so a demanding game or other GPU-heavy application can leave too little capacity for the stream. Changing the network bitrate alone will not solve a GPU bottleneck.

- Free GPU capacity. Close or reduce competing GPU-heavy tasks. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync; lowering game graphics can also help.
- Give OBS priority on Windows. OBS recommends trying Run as administrator, which can reserve GPU capacity for OBS in many cases. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.
- Lower output demands. If the system cannot sustain 60 fps, test 30 fps. Reduce output resolution if needed. Lowering the base canvas resolution is a larger change because sources and scene layouts may need to be adjusted.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Temporarily remove expensive filters and overlays, reduce the number of demanding video or browser sources, and use smaller source dimensions where practical. Add elements back one at a time to identify the costliest part of the scene.
- Retest before returning to the original settings. Confirm that rendering and encoding lag no longer rise during representative motion and audio.
A hardware encoder, new computer, or single setting is not a universal cure: the limiting resource can vary, and reducing the work the system must perform is often the useful first diagnostic step. OBS’s performance guide covers these approaches.
Why is my stream buffering for viewers?
Viewer buffering is not the same as broadcaster-side dropped frames. OBS notes that viewers may buffer even when the broadcaster’s stream has no dropped frames because playback depends on each viewer’s device, connection, and location. If your OBS counters are healthy, lowering bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may make playback possible for more viewers, especially where the platform does not provide transcoding for different quality levels. The trade-off is reduced detail or motion smoothness for viewers who could otherwise watch at higher settings. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide discusses the distinction.

What bitrate and settings should I use?
There is no universal best setting. Balance stable upload capacity and platform limits against encoder and GPU headroom, the motion in your content, the resolution and frame rate you need, and the ability of your intended audience to play the stream. Higher resolution and frame rate generally demand more bitrate and system resources; reducing them can improve reliability and accessibility at the expense of detail or smoothness.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingestion options subject to its stated constraints. Its displayed H.264 bitrate recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The displayed H.265 and AV1 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not universal settings for Twitch or other services; the YouTube help page does not show a publication date in the version referenced here.
