For reliable YouTube playback with your screen off, use the YouTube mobile app and an eligible membership: YouTube Premium covers eligible videos, while Premium Lite covers most non-music videos in supported countries. If you want to keep watching in a small window while using another app, use picture-in-picture (PiP)—a different feature.
Background playback and picture-in-picture are different
Background playback keeps audio going after you leave the YouTube app or lock your phone. Picture-in-picture shrinks the video into a movable window that stays visible over other apps; it is not screen-off playback.

YouTube’s background-play guidance describes membership-based playback in its mobile apps. PiP availability is separate and can depend on country, content, device, and rollout; check YouTube’s PiP instructions for current eligibility.
Use YouTube Premium for full background playback
YouTube Premium supports background playback in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps where available. For eligible videos, start playback in the YouTube app, then switch apps or lock the device. Audio should continue through the phone’s media controls.

- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the Google account with the active membership.
- Tap your profile picture, then Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play.
- Select Always on. This is the default. Off disables it; Headphones or external speakers restricts it to when an external audio output is connected.
- Start a video, leave YouTube or lock the phone, and check that playback continues.
Background playback is not available in the Shorts player, and some individual videos may also be ineligible. See YouTube’s Premium feature details. Premium plan availability and options vary by country; consult the official Premium page for the options shown to you.
Set up picture-in-picture on Android
Use these steps if you want a floating video rather than audio-only playback. Android menu names and locations can vary by manufacturer and version.
- Open Android Settings → Apps → YouTube, then find Picture-in-picture in the app’s advanced or special-access settings.
- Turn on Allow picture-in-picture.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback and turn on Picture-in-picture.
- Play a compatible video and exit YouTube. If eligible, it should shrink to a floating window.
For screen-off listening, use the Background Play setting instead. See the Android PiP instructions.

Set up picture-in-picture on iPhone or iPad
YouTube’s instructions specify iOS or iPadOS 15 or later for PiP. To use it, enable Settings → General → Picture-in-Picture → Start PiP Automatically on the device, then turn on YouTube → Settings → Playback → Picture-in-picture. Play a compatible video and leave the app to open the floating player.
For screen-off audio, use background playback in the YouTube app with an eligible membership; PiP alone does not provide it. Follow YouTube’s iOS PiP instructions if the controls differ on your device.
Does Premium Lite support background playback?
Yes, for most non-music videos in countries where Premium Lite is offered. It does not include background playback for Shorts or music content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated videos containing music-partner material. It also does not include YouTube Music Premium. Ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and while searching or browsing.

For music and podcasts, consider YouTube Music
YouTube Music Premium supports background playback for music and podcasts in the YouTube Music app, including playback with the screen off. It also offers audio-only mode, which avoids loading the music video where that option applies. Podcast ads may still occur for members, and podcast availability and features vary.
YouTube Music Premium is focused on music and podcasts; it is not the same as full YouTube Premium for background playback across general YouTube videos. See YouTube Music Premium benefits and podcast playback details.

Fix background playback that stops
Work through these checks in order. They cover account eligibility, app settings, device restrictions, and playback interruptions.
- Confirm the account and membership. Check that YouTube is signed in to the Google account with an active, eligible membership.
- Check Background Play. In YouTube, go to Profile picture → Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play. Choose Always on, or connect headphones if the setting is restricted to external audio.
- Update and restart. Install any available YouTube app update, then restart the app. If needed, restart the device.
- Review device restrictions. On Android, check whether battery-management or data-saving settings are blocking YouTube’s background activity. Also check that notifications are not blocked.
- Check for competing audio and connection problems. Another app taking audio focus or an interrupted internet connection can stop playback.
- Try a different video and verify location eligibility. A particular video may not support background playback, and membership features depend on country availability.

Why browser workarounds are unreliable
Desktop-mode browser tricks and unofficial third-party apps are not dependable, officially supported methods. Their behavior can change with the browser, operating system, account, or YouTube player updates; third-party apps can also raise privacy, security, or service-terms concerns. For consistent screen-off playback, use the official app and a membership that covers the video you want.
