For most movies, open the streaming app on your phone and tap its Cast or AirPlay button. If your TV or app does not support that, try screen mirroring or connect the phone to the TV with a compatible HDMI adapter. The right method depends on your phone, TV or streaming device, and the movie app—not simply on whether the TV is “smart.”
Casting sends playback to a supported TV or receiver, while your phone usually acts as a remote. Mirroring shows the phone’s screen on the TV, including notifications and app controls, and some movie services block it. Start with app-based playback; use mirroring mainly for compatible content or as a fallback.
Choose the method that fits your phone and TV
Use this as a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee: support varies by TV model, software, region, receiver, and streaming app.

A TV may support AirPlay but not Google Cast, or Google Cast but not AirPlay. A streaming app also has to support the playback method you want to use. If the TV and phone do not share a supported wireless option, use the TV’s own app, a compatible streaming device, or HDMI.

Cast a movie from a supported app
App casting is usually the most convenient movie option. A Cast-enabled app can tell a compatible TV or streaming device to play the movie, leaving the phone available as a remote. Google lists Cast-enabled apps for compatible Android and iOS phones; Roku also supports app-based casting for supported apps. See Google Cast Help and Roku’s casting instructions.
What you need
- A movie app that supports the receiver you plan to use.
- A compatible TV, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, Roku, or other receiver.
- In a typical home setup, the phone and receiver on the same local Wi-Fi network.
- An up-to-date app and receiver software.
Google’s Cast help lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12 or later for casting from Cast-enabled apps. The separate Google Home setup requirements for Google streaming devices list Android 9 or later and iOS 17 or later. Those are different requirements: the Google Home app’s setup compatibility does not define the minimum phone version for every app’s Cast feature. Check Google’s streaming-device requirements for setup details.
Start playback
- Connect the phone and TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the movie app and choose the title.
- Tap the app’s Cast icon, usually a rectangle with signal lines, and select the TV or receiver. The icon’s location varies by app.
- If the movie does not begin, select it again or use the TV remote to choose a profile if the service asks.
- Use the phone to pause, seek, change subtitles, or disconnect. With app casting, the receiver may continue playing while you use the phone for other tasks.
Roku notes that its cast icon may not appear until playback has started, and some apps require choosing a profile with the Roku remote. If there is no Cast control, the app may not support that receiver; try its TV app or a different method.

AirPlay can send video from an iPhone or iPad to Apple TV 4K or an AirPlay-compatible smart TV. For ordinary home discovery, the phone and receiver should be on the same Wi-Fi network. Some video apps do not support AirPlay. Apple’s steps and compatibility guidance are in AirPlay support and the iPhone User Guide.
Stream video with the app’s AirPlay control
- Connect the iPhone or iPad and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the movie app and start the movie or open its playback controls.
- Tap the AirPlay button and select the Apple TV or compatible TV. In some apps, AirPlay is inside another control such as Share.
- To end playback on the TV, tap AirPlay again and select the iPhone or iPad.
Netflix does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad. For Netflix, use a compatible TV or streaming-device app, a supported casting path, or a suitable video cable instead. Netflix’s current options are described at Netflix Help.

- App Limitations: Please be aware that certain apps with "HDCP" protocol, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, Hulu, Comcast TV, Xfinity, Vudu, Sky Go, BT Sport, may not be supported due to copyright protection.
Mirror the iPhone screen
- Connect the iPhone or iPad and receiving TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the upper-right corner; on iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap Screen Mirroring and select the TV or Apple TV.
- Enter the AirPlay passcode shown on the TV if prompted.
- To stop, reopen Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.
If an app refuses to play through AirPlay or mirroring, use its TV app, a receiver the app supports, or HDMI rather than repeatedly trying the same screen-mirroring route.
Mirror an Android phone
Android screen-mirroring menus differ by manufacturer and software version. Look for names such as Cast, Screen Cast, Smart View, Wireless display, or Screen share. For movies, check for the app’s Cast button first: mirroring may expose notifications and can be blocked by protected playback.
Google Cast receivers
- Open the Google Home app and select the TV or streaming device.
- Choose Cast my screen, or the equivalent option shown in your app.
- Follow the confirmation prompts. Stop casting from Google Home or the phone’s notification shade.
The exact wording and availability depend on the phone’s manufacturer and Android version.
Samsung Galaxy and Samsung TV
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings on the Galaxy phone.
- Tap Smart View or the screen-mirroring control.
- Select the Samsung TV and approve the connection or enter a PIN if requested.
- Stop from Smart View or the phone’s notification controls.
Samsung describes Smart View and other connection options in its phone-to-TV guide and screen-mirroring support. Model and software compatibility still matter.
Android and Roku
Roku distinguishes app casting from screen mirroring. Its mirroring feature is for compatible Android and Windows devices; AirPlay is a separate option for compatible Apple devices. To mirror an Android phone:

- If needed, enable screen mirroring in Roku settings.
- Open the phone’s Cast, Smart View, or Wireless Display control and select the Roku.
- Approve the request with the Roku remote. Choose Allow for one session or Always allow for future connections.
Check Roku’s screen-mirroring support for device compatibility.

HDMI is a useful fallback when wireless discovery is blocked, Wi-Fi is unstable, or the phone and TV do not share a supported wireless method. The phone must support video output, and protected movies may require HDCP-compatible equipment.
iPhone and iPad
Use an adapter suited to the device’s connector: a USB-C Digital AV adapter or compatible USB-C video-output solution for USB-C devices, or a Lightning Digital AV Adapter for a Lightning device.
- Connect the adapter to the phone or tablet.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.
- Use the TV remote to select the matching HDMI input.
- Start the movie on the phone and approve any prompt that appears.
Apple warns that movies, TV shows, and some streaming video require an HDCP-compatible connection. VGA and adapters that convert HDMI to older composite or component formats may not work for protected video. See Apple’s Digital AV Adapter support.
Android phones
A USB-C connector does not by itself mean that an Android phone can send video to a TV. Before buying an adapter, check the exact phone model’s specifications for wired display support, such as USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. Netflix also advises Android users to confirm their particular phone supports video output before using a cable or adapter.

Fix common playback problems
The TV or receiver does not appear
- Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network; avoid guest networks or networks that isolate connected devices.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN and check whether discovery works.
- Confirm the app supports the receiver, then update the app and TV or receiver software.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the phone and receiver. If needed, restart the router.
- On iPhone or iPad, allow the app’s Local Network access when using Google Cast. Google says iOS 14 or later needs this permission to discover Cast devices.
- On Android, check whether the phone is switching between separate or isolated networks; Google suggests avoiding automatic switching between separate networks and, in some cases, temporarily disabling Adaptive connectivity.

The Cast or AirPlay button is missing
- Start playback first; some apps reveal casting controls only after playback begins.
- Check the playback controls or Share menu and update the app.
- Confirm that both the app and receiving device support the same method.
- Open the service’s native TV app or use HDMI if the control is unavailable.
The TV shows a black screen, or audio plays without video
Protected video can be blocked by DRM or HDCP requirements, an unsupported mirroring method, or an incompatible adapter. Stop mirroring and try the app’s native Cast or AirPlay control, or open the service directly on the TV. For a wired setup, use HDCP-capable equipment; remove unsupported splitters or format converters and try another HDMI input. The movie buffers or looks poor
- Prefer app casting over full-screen mirroring when the app supports it.
- Move the router or receiver closer to the access point and reduce other high-bandwidth network activity.
- If the streaming device supports it, try a wired Ethernet connection.
- Check the service’s playback-quality settings and any account or subscription limits.
With app casting, the receiver may fetch the stream itself, so the phone’s screen resolution alone does not determine TV picture quality. Actual results depend on the service, title, receiver, account, network, and display.
When to use a streaming device instead
If the TV lacks the wireless protocol or apps you need, a dedicated streaming device can provide a compatible TV app platform. Choose based on the services you use and the phone ecosystem: Google TV/Google Cast, Roku, Apple TV/AirPlay, and Fire TV are different ecosystems, not interchangeable receiver standards. Do not buy a receiver before checking the TV’s existing features. If the TV already has the native app or protocol you need, a new device may add nothing. A streaming device is more useful when the TV software is outdated, lacks an app, or does not support the phone’s preferred playback route.
