To hear Spotify’s left and right stereo channels through both sides, turn on Mono Audio in the accessibility settings of the device that is actually playing the sound. Spotify’s current official audio documentation does not describe a universal in-app mono switch. Mono is a system-level setting, so it can affect other media apps as well as Spotify.
What mono audio does—and what it does not do
Stereo audio keeps separate left and right channels. Mono combines those channels into one signal and plays the combined content through both sides. That can help when you listen with one earbud or need to hear material mixed into either stereo channel.

Mono differs from the left-right balance control. Balance shifts the stereo image toward one side; it does not combine the channels. Mono is useful when you need both channels available through either side. It will not repair a failed earbud, a disconnected Bluetooth device, a damaged cable, or an incorrectly positioned balance slider. It also removes left-right separation and may affect spatial effects.
Spotify’s documented audio options include controls such as volume normalization and, on supported Windows desktop setups, exclusive mode, but its current official documentation does not document a universal control for converting stereo playback to mono. Use the audio accessibility setting on the playback device instead. Spotify’s volume-normalization documentation and Exclusive mode documentation describe these other controls.

Enable mono audio on the device playing Spotify
First identify where Spotify is rendering audio. If you are listening through your phone, change the phone’s setting. If you are listening through a computer, change that computer’s setting. When Spotify Connect sends playback to a speaker, TV, console, or other device, the phone is acting as a controller rather than necessarily processing the sound locally. Spotify says some audio settings cannot be changed while using Connect, so test on the receiving device or stop Connect and play locally. Spotify’s audio-settings documentation notes this Connect limitation.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Audio & Visual.
- Turn on Mono Audio.
- Open Spotify and start playback.
Apple says Mono Audio makes the left and right speakers play the same content. The setting applies to media on the device generally, not just Spotify. In the same Audio & Visual menu, check that the Balance slider is centered if one side remains silent. See Apple’s iPhone audio settings guide.
On supported AirPods and Beats configurations, Apple says Mono Audio can be used instead of stereo, but Spatial Audio and head tracking are unavailable while mono is active. Apple’s AirPods guide explains the mono option.

Android
- Open Settings and use its search field.
- Search for Mono audio. If there is no direct match, try audio adjustment or hearing enhancements.
- Open the matching accessibility or hearing-audio setting and turn mono on.
- Play Spotify and test with one earbud.
Android menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software version. Look under areas such as Accessibility → Hearing or Accessibility → Audio, but do not assume the same path applies to every Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, or other phone.
If the control is missing, check the device maker’s support information or update the phone’s software. A third-party audio-routing app is a last resort: its privacy practices, battery use, compatibility, and Bluetooth behavior require separate consideration, and no particular app is recommended here.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
Windows 11: Open Settings → Accessibility → Audio, then turn on Mono audio.

Do not confuse that switch with the separate Bluetooth LE Audio format choice for microphone-active playback. On supported Windows 11 24H2 systems and compatible LE Audio hardware, a setting may offer Mono (1 channel) or Stereo (2 channels) while the microphone is active. Use Accessibility → Audio → Mono audio for system-wide mono listening; use the Bluetooth format choice for headset microphone or call-related compatibility. Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Accessibility in the sidebar, then Audio.
- Turn on Play stereo audio as mono.
- Play Spotify.
Apple describes this setting as playing stereo tracks as mono through the Mac’s speakers or connected headphones. Older macOS releases may call System Settings System Preferences. See Apple’s Mac accessibility audio guide.
Confirm Spotify is playing in mono
- Choose a track with clear left-right separation, or use spoken audio.
- Start playback and remove one earbud or headphone side.
- Check that material from both sides of the mix remains audible through the side you are using.
- If one side is still silent, check the device’s left-right balance and confirm that the intended output device is selected.
The setting should be enabled on the device producing the sound. If Spotify is using Connect, test with local playback or check the receiving device’s audio settings; a setting on the phone that controls playback may not affect audio rendered elsewhere.

- Check balance first. Center the device’s balance slider. A slider set fully to one side can mute the other, and mono does not correct that setting.
- Check the output device. On Mac, open System Settings → Sound → Output and select the intended speakers or headphones. On other devices, confirm Spotify is routed to the headphones you are testing.
- Reconnect Bluetooth headphones. Disconnect and reconnect them, then test playback again. If only one earbud works across multiple apps, check its charge, pairing, fit, and manufacturer troubleshooting steps.
- Compare apps. Test another media app. If it has the same one-sided problem, investigate the device, output, or headphones; if the problem occurs only with one Spotify track, the source mix may be responsible.
- Test without Spotify Connect. Stop Connect and play locally, or adjust settings on the device receiving the stream. Connect routes playback to another device, so local processing may not apply.
- Restart and update. Restart Spotify and the playback device, then install available app and system updates if the problem persists.
- Consider exclusive access on Windows. Spotify’s Windows desktop Exclusive mode gives Spotify full control of a selected audio device and can prevent other apps from using it. It is not a mono setting. If shared system audio is part of the problem, disable exclusive mode while troubleshooting. Spotify’s Exclusive mode guide explains its effect.
If the device still plays only through one side in multiple apps, mono is not a hardware repair. Check the earbud, adapter, cable, Bluetooth connection, or output device, and seek service if needed.

Turn mono off when you want stereo again
Return to the same accessibility audio menu and switch Mono Audio off. On Mac, turn off Play stereo audio as mono. Restoring stereo brings back left-right separation; on supported Apple headphones, it also allows Spatial Audio and head tracking to be used when otherwise available.
Mono Spotify playback and local files
A mono audio file and a mono playback setting are different things. A file may already have one channel, while the device-level accessibility setting combines left and right channels for playback generally. Spotify’s local files documentation discusses mono and stereo channel behavior for local audio; that does not establish a universal Spotify switch that converts every stereo stream.
