YouTube Music can play audio files stored on an Android phone or tablet. Google calls them device files: turn on Show device files in settings, then find them in the Library. This plays files saved on that device; it is separate from YouTube Music downloads and from music uploaded to your cloud library.
Before you start
You need YouTube Music on an Android device and an audio file saved in storage the app can access. A file visible only inside another app’s private folder, or a cloud-storage shortcut that has not been downloaded, may not be available to YouTube Music. Android distinguishes shared media from app-specific storage; see Android’s data and file storage documentation.
Google’s instructions for device files do not list YouTube Music Premium as a requirement. Android may ask you to allow access to music, audio, or other media when the app scans your files. Permission wording varies by Android version and device manufacturer.
Turn on Device files and play a song
Google’s documented Android path is Profile picture → Settings → Library & downloads → Show device files.

- Open YouTube Music on your Android device.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Library & downloads.
- Turn on Show device files. If Android asks for media or audio access, allow it if you want the app to find and play your stored files.
- Return to Library.
- Open Songs, Albums, Artists, or Playlists, then tap the Device files tab.
- Tap the audio file you want to play.
Put music on your Android device
YouTube Music cannot play a file that exists only on a computer or in the cloud. Copy or download it to the phone first. You can transfer files over USB from a computer, download them through a browser or file-delivery app, copy them from removable storage or another Android device, or use a file manager to save them in shared storage.
There is no single folder that is guaranteed to work on every Android device. The key is that the file be stored locally in accessible shared storage and recognized by Android as audio media. If your files do not appear
Try these checks in order. Android’s storage model and permission labels vary by release and manufacturer, so a menu name on your device may differ.
- Confirm the file is actually on the phone. Open it in the Android file manager. A cloud file or shortcut may need to be downloaded first.
- Move or copy it to shared storage. Files in another app’s private storage may not be discoverable by YouTube Music. Use a regular shared audio or music folder; no particular folder name is universally required.
- Check the setting. In YouTube Music, revisit Profile picture → Settings → Library & downloads and confirm Show device files is on.
- Check Android permissions. Open Android Settings → Apps → YouTube Music → Permissions. If available, allow the relevant permission, which may be called Music and audio, Photos and videos, or something similar.
- Reopen the app, then restart the phone if needed. This can prompt the app and Android media library to scan again.
- Test a standard audio file, such as an MP3. Google does not provide a definitive supported-format list for device files, so unusual containers or codecs, damaged files, and DRM-protected files are possible causes if a file cannot be found or played.
If Show device files is missing, make sure you are using the Android app rather than the iPhone or iPad app. Update YouTube Music through Google Play and reopen it. Labels or layouts can vary by app version, language, and device; also look in the Library’s Device files tab rather than assuming local tracks will appear under the service’s downloads area.

What Device files can and cannot do
Google documents the following behavior for device files in YouTube Music on Android:

These playlist and casting limits are documented on Google’s Android device-file help page. A file can appear in YouTube Music without becoming a streaming-catalog track. Device files are intended for playback from the phone’s local storage, so that playback does not depend on streaming availability in the same way catalog music does; this does not guarantee that every app screen or account feature works offline.

Device files and uploads are different
Device files stay on the current Android device for local playback. An upload is sent to your YouTube Music library through the web on a computer. A YouTube Music offline download is different from both: it is a service download, not your own audio file or an upload to your library.
If you want your own music available across devices, Google’s upload workflow is the alternative. On a computer, open YouTube Music on the web and either drag audio files onto the site or choose Profile picture → Upload music. Wait for the upload and processing to finish. In the Android app, look under Library → Songs → Uploads or the corresponding Uploads view. Google says uploads cannot be completed in the mobile app.

Google lists FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, and WMA as supported upload formats, with a limit of up to 100,000 uploaded songs. Uploaded music is private to the uploader and is not made available to other YouTube Music users through a shared playlist. Google also says uploads do not influence recommendations and can be played in the background, ad-free, and offline without an active YouTube Music Premium subscription. Premium members can cast uploaded content and play it through smart speakers and Sonos. Those upload details are in Google’s upload help page; uploading does not turn a track into YouTube Music catalog content.
Is YouTube Music the right local music player?
Use Device files if your tracks are already on an Android phone and you want basic local playback in an app you already use. It suits listeners who are comfortable keeping local-only playlists and do not need to cast those files.
Consider uploads if you want access to your music on more than one device and can use a computer for the upload step. A dedicated local music player may be a better fit if you need robust folder browsing, broad codec or tag support, more flexible playlists and queue controls, or features such as equalizers, replay gain, gapless playback, or network-library access. Choose based on the playback features you need rather than assuming device files behave like streaming tracks.
