Strokestown Park in County Roscommon is the strongest museum-and-estate anchor; the National Famine Way is a separate 165-kilometre walking undertaking; the Jeanie Johnston provides a guided famine-emigrant ship experience in Dublin Docklands; and the Dunbrody Famine Ship offers a comparable visit in New Ross, County Wexford.
These sites are spread across different regions, and no single official route links them all. Let your arrival point, transport, available days and mobility needs determine the order. Opening hours, tour times, tickets and closures can change, so confirm every detail on the venue’s current visitor information before travelling.
Choose the experience before choosing the route
Irish Famine history is presented in several forms. A museum gives you documents, objects and competing viewpoints; a ship visit makes emigration and conditions at sea more tangible; and a long-distance trail follows the route taken by a specific group of displaced people. They are not interchangeable stops, and the National Famine Way should not be treated as a short walk added casually to a museum outing.
| Place | Region | Primary experience | Key planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strokestown Park and National Famine Museum | County Roscommon | Museum, historic estate and house tour | Advance booking is recommended for house tours; current visitor information lists tours at noon and 2 p.m. |
| National Famine Way | From Strokestown toward Dublin | 165 km of waymarked walking linked to the 1847 emigrant group | Plan it as a dedicated trail trip; current sources do not provide a complete day-by-day itinerary or trail-condition report. |
| Jeanie Johnston | Dublin Docklands | Guided tour aboard an authentic replica famine ship | Tour times, ticket categories and the optional combination ticket with EPIC are set on the operator’s live visitor page. |
| Dunbrody Famine Ship | New Ross, County Wexford | Ship, visitor centre and related visitor facilities | The official page says the site operates 362 days per year, but you still need to verify the date-specific opening information. |
How the geography affects your plan
Strokestown is in County Roscommon, the Jeanie Johnston is at Custom House Quay in Dublin 1, and Dunbrody is on the quayside in New Ross, County Wexford. Those locations occupy separate parts of the country. The available information does not establish journey times, a best order, or a fixed number of days in which to see them, so avoid building a schedule around assumed short transfers.

Start with your arrival and departure points
If you fly into Dublin, a Dublin Docklands visit may fit naturally at the beginning or end of a trip, but that does not make it the correct first stop for everyone. Travellers arriving elsewhere, using public transport, or combining the sites with family commitments may find a different sequence more practical. Mark each venue on your own map, then check transport connections for the dates you actually have.
Group by region rather than by historical theme alone
A Roscommon day, a Dublin Docklands day and a southeast-Ireland day are easier to manage than repeatedly crossing the country. Keep the National Famine Way separate unless you have deliberately allocated time and transport support for a long walk. The trail follows a historical route, but it is not evidence of a convenient modern connection between all four visitor experiences.
Strokestown Park and the National Famine Museum
For visitors looking for a famine museum in the west of Ireland, Strokestown Park is the clearest starting point in this group. The National Famine Museum presents the Great Irish Famine through parallel landlord and tenant experiences, using original estate documents and everyday objects connected with Strokestown. That structure matters: the museum is not only a chronology of crop failure, but an examination of how the crisis was lived and administered by people occupying very different positions on the same estate.
What the museum contributes
Strokestown’s material gives the local story a documentary foundation. Estate records are used to develop the accounts presented in the galleries, and the site identifies Major Denis Mahon, the estate owner, as the first landlord assassinated during the famine. The claim is presented by Strokestown Park itself; it should be understood as part of the estate’s documented interpretation rather than as a general label for every landlord in Ireland.
The museum combines audio, audiovisual and touchscreen elements with a family activity guide. Audio guides are listed in English, Irish, French, Spanish, German and Mandarin, which can help multigenerational or multilingual groups engage with the same displays without reducing the subject to a single narrative.
Strokestown’s page describes the famine period as 1845–1847 and says that over 2 million people died or emigrated. Tourism Ireland gives the same rounded figure. Neither page supplies a publication year or a detailed statistical methodology for that number, so treat it as the rounded figure used by those visitor-information sources, not as a precise count for every definition of famine mortality and migration.
A primary voice preserved in the interpretation
The museum reproduces a statement attributed to the Cloonahee Petition, dated 22 August 1846: “Our families are really and truly suffering in our presence and we cannot much longer withstand their cries for food. We have no food for them, our potatoes are rotten and we have no grain”. It is a petition reproduced by the museum, not a modern interview. Reading it alongside estate records helps connect policy and administration with the immediate language of hunger.

Opening hours, house tours and booking
Strokestown’s current visitor information lists the park and museum as open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It lists house tours at noon and 2 p.m. and recommends booking online in advance. These are live operational details rather than permanent guarantees: check the official page for your travel date before setting out.

A banner on the site has stated that the woodland was closed from 20 September for work and would reopen soon. Because such notices can become stale, confirm whether the woodland, house, museum and any outdoor route you intend to use are open when you visit.
Access and facilities
Strokestown’s frequently asked questions direct visitors to a dedicated accessibility page covering parking, wheelchair and pushchair surfaces, induction loops and allergens. Tourism Ireland says the museum, café, gift shop and ground floor of the house are wheelchair accessible, and that free parking is available. Accessibility can depend on the exact route, surface and assistance required, so contact the venue with specific questions rather than relying on a general label.
A practical Strokestown visit sequence
- Check the live date information. Confirm opening status, the house-tour times, woodland notices and any seasonal changes.
- Reserve the house tour if it is central to your plan. The site recommends advance online booking, and a timed tour may shape the rest of your day.
- Allow time for the museum’s contrasting perspectives. Read the tenant and landlord stories as related but distinct experiences, and note where estate documents support the interpretation.
- Use the audio or family materials that fit your group. Select a language and level of detail before you arrive if that will make the visit easier.
- Check the route you can physically use. Ask about surfaces, loops, parking, pushchair access and allergens in advance if any of those affect your party.
The National Famine Way: plan a trail, not a museum add-on
Strokestown Park says the National Famine Way follows the route of 1,490 emigrants who left the estate together in 1847 and walked toward Dublin. Tourism Ireland lists the waymarked trail at 165 kilometres. Those figures provide the route’s historical and physical scale: this is a sustained journey associated with a particular group, not a short commemorative loop beside the museum.
What the trail can add
Walking part of the route can extend the museum’s estate-based story into the landscape through which the emigrants travelled. It invites you to think about distance, roads, provisions, weather and the physical effort implied by leaving home on foot. A partial walk can be meaningful, but describe it accurately as a section of the National Famine Way rather than implying that you have completed the route.
What you must plan separately
The sources available for this guide do not establish a day-by-day itinerary, current trail conditions, accommodation pattern, luggage transfer service or public-transport timetable for the full 165 kilometres. Before committing to a multi-day walk, obtain current trail information and check each section’s surfaces, waymarking, road crossings, accommodation and emergency options. If you are travelling with children, mobility equipment or a large pack, verify whether the particular section you choose is suitable.
- Decide whether you want the full route, several linked sections or a single local walk.
- Check current waymarking and conditions for every section, not only the start and finish.
- Arrange overnight stays and transport between sections before departure.
- Carry weather-appropriate clothing, water, navigation backup and a plan for an early finish.
- Keep the museum booking and the trail schedule independent; a delayed walk should not strand you outside a timed house tour.
Jeanie Johnston in Dublin Docklands
The Jeanie Johnston offers a ship-centred way to approach famine emigration. Its operator describes today’s vessel as an authentic replica and presents a guided tour about Irish famine emigrants and life aboard a famine ship. Do not call it the original ship: the replica status is part of the operator’s own description and is important to set expectations.
Location and ticket choices
The visitor information page places the vessel at Custom House Quay in Dublin 1. It lists tours throughout the day, adult and concession ticket categories, and a combination ticket with the nearby EPIC museum. The operator says EPIC is a short walk away. Published times, prices and ticket terms are volatile, so use the current operator page when selecting a slot and read the conditions attached to any combination ticket.

How to use the visit well
A guided ship tour works best when you treat the vessel as an interpretation of emigrant experience rather than as a complete account of the famine. Listen for the practical details of shipboard life, then place them alongside what you have learned about eviction, work, hunger and departure on land. If you also visit EPIC, allow enough flexibility for the two venues’ separate admission and timing arrangements; the combination ticket does not turn them into one continuous tour.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe operator says that 2,500 people took a voyage aboard the Jeanie Johnston. The page does not identify a publication year for that figure. Present it as the operator’s stated historical statistic, not as a claim that the replica itself carried those passengers.
Booking checklist
- Open the current Jeanie Johnston visitor-information page for your date.
- Choose the tour time and ticket category that match your group.
- Read the terms of any Jeanie Johnston–EPIC combination ticket before paying.
- Confirm meeting instructions at Custom House Quay and allow for the walk if you are pairing the visit with EPIC.
- Ask the operator directly about access requirements that are specific to a historic ship environment.
Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross
The Dunbrody Famine Ship provides another ship-based famine-emigration experience, this time on the quayside in New Ross, County Wexford. Its official visitor page identifies the ship, visitor centre and restaurant as open 362 days per year. That number is useful for understanding the site’s broad operating pattern, but it is not a guarantee that the venue will be open on your chosen date. Check current opening information, seasonal hours and any event-related closure before travelling.
When Dunbrody is the better fit
Choose New Ross when your wider journey already includes southeast Ireland or when you want a ship and visitor-centre experience without making Dublin Docklands the centre of the trip. The Dunbrody visit is geographically distinct from the Jeanie Johnston, so seeing both is a thematic choice rather than an efficient single-stop plan.
Questions to settle before departure
- Is the ship, visitor centre and restaurant operating on your date?
- Are there timed tours or capacity limits that require advance booking?
- Which areas are accessible to your party, and are there ship-specific constraints?
- How will you reach the quayside and where can you park or connect onward?
The available visitor information does not provide a fixed admission price or a detailed access specification for every part of the Dunbrody site. Obtain those details directly from the venue rather than inferring them from another attraction’s policy.

A practical planning workflow
1. Define the scope of your trip
Decide whether you are planning one focused visit, a regional weekend or a multi-stop history holiday. A single venue can be a complete experience. Adding more sites increases transport and booking complexity; it does not automatically produce a better understanding.
2. Select the anchor experience
Use Strokestown for an estate-and-museum foundation, the Jeanie Johnston or Dunbrody for shipboard interpretation, or the National Famine Way for walking. Make that choice before adding optional stops.

3. Build around geography
Keep Roscommon, Dublin Docklands and New Ross as separate planning clusters. Check your own route planner and public-transport operator for current connections. Do not publish or rely on an assumed transfer time when the venue information does not provide one.
4. Verify live operations
Check opening dates, timed tours, ticket categories, prices, closures and access notes on each official site. Save confirmation emails and recheck close to departure, particularly for woodland or construction notices.
5. Match the plan to your group
Ask about wheelchair routes, pushchair surfaces, induction loops, allergens, ship access and parking. Strokestown publishes general information and directs visitors to more detailed accessibility guidance; other venues should be contacted for their own arrangements.
6. Leave resilient gaps
Historic sites can involve timed entry, outdoor surfaces and weather exposure. Leave enough margin for a delayed connection, a slower museum visit or a shortened walk. A flexible plan is safer than trying to force three distant venues into one day.

Confusing the trail with the attraction
The National Famine Way’s 165 kilometres and the museum grounds are different commitments. Read the trail as a separate undertaking and arrange transport, lodging and equipment accordingly.
Treating a replica as an original
The Jeanie Johnston operator identifies the vessel as an authentic replica. Its value lies in guided interpretation and the physical setting, not in a claim that the nineteenth-century ship itself survives.
Assuming current hours are permanent
Strokestown’s daily hours, house-tour slots, woodland status, Jeanie Johnston departures and Dunbrody operating days can change. A page that was accurate when you booked may not reflect a later closure or seasonal adjustment.

Using one site’s accessibility information for another
Wheelchair access to Strokestown’s museum, café, gift shop and ground floor does not establish the same conditions aboard either ship. Confirm each venue separately and describe your needs precisely.
Reducing the famine to a single statistic
The rounded figure of over 2 million deaths or emigrants conveys scale, but the museum’s records, the Cloonahee Petition and the emigrant route show how policies and hardship affected particular families. Give those human and documentary details time during your visit.
Sample ways to structure the trip
A Dublin-focused visit
Book a Jeanie Johnston tour in the Docklands and decide whether the nearby EPIC combination ticket suits your interests. Keep the day centred on the two venues and their live schedules rather than promising time for a distant Roscommon or Wexford stop.

A Roscommon-focused visit
Reserve a Strokestown house-tour slot, explore the National Famine Museum’s tenant and landlord interpretation, and use the estate setting to understand why the National Famine Way begins here historically. Add a trail section only after checking current waymarking, surfaces and transport.
A southeast-Ireland visit
Use New Ross as the base for the Dunbrody experience, verifying the date-specific opening information and any tour requirements. Treat a later Dublin or Roscommon visit as a separate regional move.
A dedicated trail journey
Plan the National Famine Way first: decide the distance you can cover, secure overnight arrangements and check every section’s current conditions. Schedule the museum as an orientation or follow-up visit, not as a substitute for trail preparation.
Visit with historical care
The Great Irish Famine is both a national catastrophe and a collection of individual experiences. Strokestown’s estate records, the petition dated 22 August 1846 and the account of 1,490 emigrants leaving together all point to people making decisions under extreme pressure. Ship museums add the conditions of emigration; the trail adds distance and landscape. Moving between these forms of evidence can deepen understanding, provided each is allowed to speak on its own terms.
