How to Plan a Road Trip Along the Lincoln Highway

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan a Lincoln Highway trip as a chain of researched legs, not as one uninterrupted modern highway. Start with the Lincoln Highway Association’s official interactive map, choose whether you want the earliest alignment, a later drivable alignment, or a blend, then verify every road, bridge, attraction, charger, and overnight stop with current local information before you leave.

The historic route crosses more than 3,000 miles between New York City and San Francisco, and its alignments changed repeatedly. The map is the best starting point for understanding those changes, but it is an orientation and research tool rather than turn-by-turn navigation or a promise that every historic trace is open today.

What the Lincoln Highway is—and why planning is different

The Lincoln Highway was dedicated in 1913 as the first transcontinental road for automobiles in the United States. The Lincoln Highway Association describes its New York City–San Francisco crossing as more than 3,000 miles. It is a named historic route, not one uniformly signed road that you can follow by entering a single destination into a navigation app.

The original route ran through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California. Route choices changed as roads improved, bridges were replaced, and numbered highway systems developed. The Association’s history notes that the route did not initially include Kansas or Colorado; a temporary Colorado dogleg was later added and then dropped. Parts of the Lincoln Highway were eventually divided among several U.S. highway numbers.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That history creates the central planning decision: which version of the road do you mean to follow? A trip that prioritizes historical continuity may include slower roads, short walks, or places where the original trace no longer carries public traffic. A trip that prioritizes dependable driving may use later alignments and modern connections while visiting the most significant surviving sites.

Choose your route philosophy before choosing stops

Earliest feasible alignment

Use the map’s original-alignment layer and follow it wherever the road remains a public, drivable route. This approach best preserves the experience of tracing the highway’s beginnings, but it can require detours around missing bridges, submerged roads, private land, or rough surfaces. Mark every uncertain section instead of assuming a historical line is still passable.

Later alignment with better access

Later alignments often provide a more practical route for an ordinary passenger car. You may sacrifice a small amount of historical continuity in exchange for paved roads, public access, easier fuel or charging, and lodging options. The map distinguishes alignment generations so you can see where that compromise occurs.

Blended itinerary

A blended plan uses historic segments as anchors and connects them with current highways when necessary. It is usually the most flexible choice for a fixed vacation window, an electric vehicle with defined charging needs, or travelers who want time for museums and towns rather than every surviving road trace.

Planning choice What you gain What you must manage
Original alignment Maximum historical continuity where the road survives Discontinuities, rough roads, private property, and non-drivable traces
Later alignment More convenient public roads and modern connections Less continuity with the earliest route
Blended route Control over time, access, attractions, and vehicle needs Careful switching between map generations and current navigation

Use the official map as your research dashboard

Open the Association’s map before booking anything. The page currently displays the date 2026-10-06, offers several route-generation overlays, identifies points of interest, and includes charging layers. It also allows printing or capturing screenshots. The map is maintained by the Association’s National Mapping Committee and is described as regularly updated; its underlying work involved more than 25 Association members and 20 years of research.

  1. Set your geographic limits. Select the states and sections you can realistically cover. A whole-country crossing and a one-state weekend require different levels of detail, so begin by narrowing the map to your actual trip area.
  2. Turn on the alignment generations. Compare the original route with later alignments and any auxiliary routes. Decide which color or line type represents the version you will use for each leg, and record that choice in your notes.
  3. Inspect the status of every proposed segment. Do not connect two attractions with a historical line until you have checked whether the underlying road is public and drivable. Zoom in far enough to identify bridges, ferries, dead ends, and property boundaries.
  4. Save an offline reference. Print the relevant map panels or capture screenshots while you have service. Keep the route-generation view and the points-of-interest view available separately so a dense screen does not hide a critical access note.
  5. Add candidate stops. Use the points-of-interest layer to create a long list, then research each place independently for address, opening dates, parking, admission, and accessibility.
  6. Check charging layers if you drive an EV. The map identifies Level 2, DC fast-charger, and Supercharger locations. Treat those icons as planning leads, not as proof that a connector is working, available to the public, or open at your arrival time.
  7. Transfer the route to current navigation. Use a current navigation app or local road authority information for the actual drive. The historical map tells you what to investigate; it does not replace live routing, closure notices, or weather alerts.

The map carries an important limitation in its own words: “While we strive to be as accurate as possible, actual road conditions may differ from the map, and you should plan accordingly.” — Lincoln Highway Association. It also says the Association is not responsible for use of the map and does not endorse listed attractions, charging stations, businesses, or campgrounds. Those statements should shape how you verify every reservation and stop.

Screen historic segments for access and vehicle suitability

A line on a historical map can represent a road that no longer exists, not a scenic shortcut. The Association marks some locations as not drivable for several distinct reasons:

  • The road has disappeared or is underwater.
  • A former bridge or ferry was removed and no public crossing remains.
  • The surface is rough and passable only with a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
  • The trace lies on private or government property without public access.

Record the reason for every blocked or uncertain segment. A missing bridge requires a different detour from a rough but legal road; private property is not a route option regardless of vehicle capability. Never bypass a gate, drive around a closure, or treat a walking trace as a drivable connection.

Create a leg-screening table

Field What to record
Leg and map alignment State, endpoints, and whether it is original, later, or blended
Current road status Public access, surface, bridge or ferry condition, and any closure
Vehicle requirement Ordinary passenger car, high-clearance vehicle, or 4×4 only
Fallback Modern connecting road and the point where you rejoin the historic route
Services Fuel or charging, food, lodging, and reliable communications

Keep a fallback for every questionable section. If a local authority, land manager, or current navigation service reports a closure, preserve the historical stop on your itinerary and route around the inaccessible road rather than trying to force continuity.

Build the trip as manageable legs

Define the trip you can actually take

Choose a start and end point, the dates you can travel, and the number of nights you are willing to spend. The historical mileage alone does not establish a sensible daily distance or a universal trip duration. Your pace will depend on road type, detours, weather, attraction hours, vehicle range, and how long you spend at each stop.

Draft legs before booking hotels

For each day, identify a departure area, one or two primary historical segments, a realistic stopping area, and a backup overnight location. Place the most access-sensitive roads early in the day, when you have time to investigate a closure without sacrificing a prepaid reservation. Avoid building a schedule that depends on arriving at a museum or visitor center at the last minute.

Allow time for historical detours

Historic towns, markers, bridges, museums, and roadside landscapes may be separated by modern bypasses. Put the attraction on the map as a destination in its own right, then calculate the return to your chosen alignment. A blended route should show exactly where you leave the historic line and where you rejoin it.

Use a written leg record

Trip day Historic objective Current driving plan Verification still needed
Day and date Alignment, marker, town, or site Road numbers, detour, and overnight area Road status, hours, reservation, or charger
Backup day plan Alternative nearby site Shorter route if weather or access changes Cancellation terms and opening status

This record separates what is historically interesting from what is currently driveable. It also gives a travel companion a clear description of your intended route if you lose service.

Plan attractions, charging, food, and lodging separately

Points of interest are leads, not endorsements

The Association’s map can reveal museums, markers, historic structures, and other points of interest that are easy to miss when you search only for large destinations. Open the official website of each candidate site to confirm its exact location, operating days, seasonal schedule, admission, parking, and accessibility. The map’s inclusion does not mean the Association has inspected or endorsed the business or attraction.

Build an EV charging buffer

For an electric vehicle, identify the next dependable charger before leaving the current one. Confirm the connector, access hours, payment method, and operating status directly with the charging provider or host. Keep a reserve for weather, a detour, or a charger that is occupied or offline; a map icon is not a guarantee of service on the day you arrive.

Book lodging around access, not just distance

Choose an overnight area after screening the day’s final road segment. Ask whether the property has late arrival, secure parking, and a usable charging arrangement if relevant. In sparsely served sections, reserve earlier and retain a second option in the next practical town. Verify cancellation policies because closures and weather can alter a historical leg.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan food and basic supplies

Do not assume that a historic marker or rural alignment has fuel, groceries, restrooms, or cellular service nearby. Mark service points in your leg record and carry water, snacks, medications, and a way to navigate when offline. Treat a long gap between services as a route-planning constraint, not an inconvenience to solve after departure.

Use the state sequence to organize research

The historical route’s state sequence is New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California. Organize your notes by state so you can find the appropriate chapter, road authority, visitor bureau, and closure information quickly. The sequence is a research index, not a promise that every state-to-state transition remains on one continuous road.

The Association maintains state chapters and a resource directory. Start with the chapter for the area where you will spend the most time, then check neighboring chapters for cross-border segments. State-level material can provide local maps or context, but current road conditions and operating hours still need confirmation close to your travel date.

Illinois: a useful regional contact

If your itinerary includes Illinois, consult the Illinois Lincoln Highway Association road-map page. The chapter invites travelers and car clubs to call ahead to the National Interpretive Center in Franklin Grove for information and tips. Its published hours are seasonal and can change, so verify the current schedule before making the center a fixed stop. Ask about the day’s road conditions, parking, nearby services, and any local detour that could affect your alignment choice.

Paper maps and route books

The official map can be printed or saved as screenshots, giving you a free offline reference. Paper material is optional, but it can be useful when you are comparing several alignment generations or traveling through areas with weak service.

The Association’s resource directory names the Lincoln Highway Map Pack produced by the Iowa Chapter and route books including Lincoln Highway Companion: A Guide to America’s First Coast-to-Coast Road by Brian Butko. Check the current edition, contents, stock, and seller details before purchasing. These publications can add historical context and planning detail, but they do not replace current navigation, closure information, or access checks.

Prepare the vehicle and the people

  • Confirm tires, spare or repair kit, fluids, lights, brakes, and emergency equipment before departure.
  • Match the vehicle to the hardest legal surface on your chosen route; do not select a 4×4-only trace for a standard car.
  • Carry paper or offline maps, charging and fuel adapters as appropriate, water, food, medications, and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Share your itinerary, overnight locations, and fallback roads with someone who is not traveling with you.
  • Download reservations, addresses, and phone numbers before entering a low-service area.
  • Check weather, wildfire or flood warnings, construction, and local closures each morning.

These preparations matter more on a historic route because the most interesting segments can be distant from major services and may not be signed consistently.

Final verification checklist

  1. Open the official map and confirm the alignment layer for every leg.
  2. Recheck any location marked not drivable, rough, private, underwater, or dependent on a former bridge or ferry.
  3. Run the selected roads through current navigation and compare the result with local road notices.
  4. Confirm attraction hours, visitor-center schedules, lodging reservations, and cancellation terms.
  5. Verify each planned charger’s connector, access, payment, and operating status.
  6. Save offline maps, screenshots, addresses, and emergency contacts.
  7. Leave a copy of the final route and backup plan with a trusted contact.

Common planning failures and the fix

Failure Why it happens Better response
Entering “Lincoln Highway” as one destination The historic route has multiple alignments and numbered-road segments Plan named legs from the official map, then navigate each leg with current data
Assuming a colored line is drivable Historical traces can be gone, private, underwater, or 4×4-only Read the map status, verify locally, and record a legal fallback
Counting map points as guaranteed attractions The Association does not endorse listed sites or businesses Confirm hours, access, parking, and availability with each operator
Relying on a charger icon Availability and equipment can change Check the charger immediately before the leg and retain a range buffer
Locking in a tight daily schedule Detours, road works, weather, and historic-site visits consume time Use flexible stops, early checks, and cancellable backups
Driving onto a closed or private trace Historical interest is mistaken for public access Respect gates and property rules; visit the point from a legal public route

Questions to settle before departure

Can I drive the entire historic line without leaving it?

No. The Association’s map identifies sections that are no longer roads, are underwater, require a former bridge or ferry, are rough enough for 4×4 use only, or lie on property without public access. A complete trip therefore requires detours or a blended alignment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the official map enough for navigation?

No. It is the essential historical planning reference, with alignment generations, points of interest, and charging layers, but current navigation and local road information are necessary for live driving decisions.

How many days should the trip take?

There is no single evidence-based schedule. Set the duration from your dates, chosen alignments, road conditions, vehicle range, and the time you want at attractions rather than dividing the historical mileage by an assumed daily figure.

Are the map’s attractions and campgrounds recommended by the Association?

No. The map explicitly says listed attractions, charging stations, businesses, and campgrounds are not endorsements. Verify each one independently.

Where can I get more Illinois-specific help?

The Illinois chapter encourages travelers to call ahead to the National Interpretive Center in Franklin Grove. Confirm its current seasonal hours and advice before relying on it as an itinerary stop.
