The reliable way to see several films at a festival is to plan around constraints, not wishful start times. Begin with the festival’s current schedule, ticket rules, venue map and transport instructions. Choose a short list of must-see screenings, reserve realistic alternatives, and leave enough time for the first film to finish, the audience to exit, the transfer to the next venue, and that venue’s queue and entry deadline.
There is no universal “safe” gap between screenings. A back-to-back plan can work in one cinema complex and fail across town. Your itinerary is sound only when the official arrival rule, travel time, likely line, accessibility needs, food and rest all fit between the published times.
Start with the festival’s rules, not a calendar app
Collect the authoritative information
Download or bookmark the exact edition’s schedule and ticketing pages before choosing films. You need more than film titles and start times:
- Venue name and full address, including whether a venue has more than one auditorium or entrance.
- Ticket or pass eligibility, reservation windows, seat-assignment rules and entry deadlines.
- Rush-line, standby and waitlist procedures.
- Official shuttle, bus, rail or walking instructions, including operating hours and stop names.
- Accessibility arrangements, accessible entrances, seating procedures and companion policies.
- Bag, phone, camera and re-entry rules.
Festival policies change by edition and sometimes by venue. Treat a general travel guide or an old shuttle map as a lead, not as a current instruction. Recheck the pages on the morning of each festival day.

Separate “must see” from “would like to see”
Mark a small number of non-negotiable screenings first. A long list of favorites creates a brittle schedule in which one sold-out show or late shuttle ruins the day. For every must-see film, identify at least one alternative: another screening of the same film, a compatible film at a nearby venue, or a title you would genuinely enjoy as a replacement.
Keep a third category for opportunistic choices. These are films you can take if a waitlist clears or if you arrive early, but they should not determine your travel plan.
Rank candidate screenings with the constraints that actually matter
When two films compete for the same time slot, compare them on the following axes rather than choosing only by title or rating:
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Personal priority | Is this a must-see, and does it have another showing? | A unique screening deserves more schedule protection than a film repeated later. |
| Ticket access | Is a ticket confirmed, or would you rely on a waitlist or rush line? | Contingent access cannot support a tightly timed transfer. |
| Venue and travel | How long does the official route take at the relevant time? | A short map distance can still involve a shuttle wait, hill, security check or inaccessible entrance. |
| Entry rule | When must ticket holders, pass holders or waitlisted guests check in? | The stated deadline may be earlier than the film’s advertised start. |
| Body and access needs | Where can you sit, eat, use a restroom and recover between films? | A theoretically possible itinerary may be physically unsustainable. |
Give each candidate a simple status—confirmed, likely, contingent or discard. Build the day around confirmed screenings, use likely screenings only when the transfer is forgiving, and reserve contingent options for open time.
Calculate the real gap between screenings
Use an end-to-entry calculation
The gap is not the time between two advertised start times. Calculate from the first film’s expected end to the second film’s required arrival:
- Start with the published runtime. If the festival does not publish one, use the longest credible runtime you can find and add a little uncertainty for introductions, Q&As or announcements.
- Add the time for credits and audience exit. A full auditorium can take several minutes to empty, and a Q&A can extend the event beyond the listed runtime.
- Add the complete transfer: walking to the correct exit, finding the stop, waiting for transport, riding, and walking to the next entrance.
- Add the second venue’s queue, bag check, ticket scan and seat-finding period.
- Compare the result with the venue’s stated arrival deadline, not merely the start time.
If the calculation leaves no room for a missed bus, a slow elevator or a restroom stop, the connection is not robust. Move the second film, choose a closer venue or make it a backup.
Same venue is easier, not automatically safe
Two screenings in the same building remove the outdoor transfer, but you may still need to change auditoriums, clear a queue, collect a reserved ticket or wait for the previous audience to leave. Check whether the festival permits you to remain inside between shows and whether a late-arrival policy applies.

Different venues need deliberate slack
Do not schedule two different-venue screenings back-to-back unless the official route and both entry procedures fit with practical margin. Cannes identifies a bus connection between central Cannes and Cineum; Sundance describes free festival shuttles serving Park City venues. Those services can make a transfer feasible, but the current route, stop, frequency and operating hours must be checked for your date.
Map venues with the festival’s own transport information
Make a one-page venue map or an offline note listing each address, the nearest official stop, the direction of travel and the entrance you need. Confirm whether the route is running during your particular screening block. A route that works during the afternoon may not operate after a late show.
Use a generic map only to understand geography. The festival’s instructions are more likely to account for temporary road closures, event-only shuttles, credential checkpoints and venue entrances. If a venue is on a steep route, in a large complex or separated from its advertised stop, include that physical effort in your calculation.
When a transfer is critical, identify a fallback route before leaving the first venue: an alternate stop, a walking route, a taxi pickup point or a nearby screening that can replace the missed show. You do not need to use the fallback; knowing it exists prevents a single delay from consuming the rest of the day.
Understand tickets, reservation windows and entry deadlines
Festival examples are not universal policies
Official guidance from different festivals shows why you must read the exact event’s rules. The Festival de Cannes says reservation timing depends on accreditation category, tickets may become available within a window before a screening, and ticket holders have a stated deadline before the show at which their assigned seat is guaranteed. Some Cannes screenings require a badge, and last-minute access may be possible only when seats remain (Festival de Cannes, current online ticket office and admission pages, accessed 2026).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSundance’s 2026 ticketing guidance advises checking for newly released tickets, joining a waitlist, looking in the app for schedule-compatible screenings and considering another location. Sundance says waitlist guests should check in at least 30 minutes before showtime. The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival’s 2026 FAQ tells ticket and pass holders to arrive at least 20 minutes early; its rush tickets depend on seats left after passholders and advance-ticket holders are admitted. These figures illustrate different organizers’ rules, not a general festival standard.
What a confirmed ticket does and does not guarantee
A ticket may guarantee a seat only if you comply with the event’s stated arrival deadline. It does not guarantee that you can reach a distant venue after a late first screening, skip a security line or enter after the festival’s late-arrival cutoff. Record the deadline beside the screening in your schedule.

How to use waitlists and rush lines
Consider a waitlist or rush line a chance, never a seat reservation. Arrive according to the organizer’s check-in rule, bring the accepted credential or ticket information, and be prepared to leave if capacity is reached. Do not place a waitlisted film between two confirmed screenings unless missing it has no damaging effect on the rest of your day.
Accessibility may change how you use a line. TIFF’s 2025 General Festival Accessibility Guide says a rush line does not guarantee a ticket and describes a Lobby Pass for visitors whose accessibility considerations limit standing in a queue. Procedures vary by venue, so contact the festival before relying on a particular accommodation.
Build a primary itinerary and two backups
Primary plan
List only screenings with workable travel and entry timing. For each one, record the venue, ticket status, required arrival time and the next decision point. A useful line in your notes looks like this:
14:00 film — Venue A — ticket confirmed — arrive by 13:30 — leave for Venue B when credits begin unless the Q&A is announced.
Same-film backup
If the title has another showing, note its time and venue immediately. This is usually the cleanest substitution because you already know why it matters to you.
Different-film backup
Choose a replacement that starts late enough to absorb a failed transfer and is accessible from your current location. A nearby film with lower priority is more useful than a highly desired title you cannot reach.

Emergency fallback
Keep one un-ticketed option—an exhibition, filmmaker talk or open screening—near the area where you expect to be. This protects meal and rest time while giving you something worthwhile if every queue fails.

Use a practical day-of workflow
- Before leaving your lodging: verify schedule changes, ticket releases, venue closures and transport status. Download or save the permitted ticket details.
- At the first venue: locate the auditorium, restroom, water and exit you will use. Ask staff about the expected release time and the fastest route to your next venue.
- Before the film ends: check whether a Q&A or introduction is scheduled. If the next screening is tight, decide in advance whether you will leave at the first reasonable opportunity.
- During the transfer: follow the current official route, not memory. Recheck the stop name and direction before boarding.
- At the next venue: join the correct line—ticketed entry, passholder, waitlist or rush—and keep your ticket ready before reaching the scanner.
- After a failure: switch to the backup immediately. Do not spend the entire next screening window refreshing an unavailable page or waiting in a line with no stated capacity.
Keep tickets and schedules available when connectivity fails
Cannes says tickets can be shown on a smartphone or in printed form. Sundance recommends its mobile app for ticketing and transportation information but warns that the app and website may be difficult to access where network coverage is poor. Before heading out, save the ticket details, confirmation number, venue address and day’s schedule in the format the festival permits.
A printed backup is sensible when the organizer accepts paper tickets. Keep the phone charged and reduce avoidable battery use by saving maps and screenshots in advance. A small USB-C power bank can be useful for a long day because phone-based tickets and transport information may be needed repeatedly; it is a convenience, not a festival requirement. Check the venue’s current bag and accessory rules before carrying one.

Ask before the festival day
Contact the festival or venue with specific questions: accessible entrance, elevator route, wheelchair or companion seating, captioning or audio description, restroom location, quiet space, and whether a Lobby Pass or another queue accommodation applies. Ask what documentation, if any, is needed and whether the arrangement must be made for each venue separately.
Do not assume that a rush line, shuttle or alternate entrance has the same accessibility provisions as a standard ticketed entry. TIFF’s guidance makes clear that queue accommodations and procedures vary, so confirm the current process rather than relying on a previous visit.
Place recovery time where it protects the itinerary
Long festival days fail as often from fatigue as from distance. Put a meal or substantial snack near a venue with dependable seating, and identify a restroom before joining a line. If you have a medical, sensory or mobility need, treat rest as a scheduling requirement rather than spare time. A plan with one fewer film and a reliable recovery period is more likely to deliver the films that matter most.
A worked example of a resilient schedule
The following is an illustrative planning model, not a festival policy. It shows how to record decisions without pretending that every venue has the same timing.
| Time | Activity | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 09:30 | Arrive at Venue A | Earlier than the organizer’s stated ticket deadline; confirm auditorium and restroom. |
| 10:00–11:40 | Must-see film | Runtime plus possible introduction is recorded before planning the transfer. |
| 11:40–12:10 | Exit and food | Do not assume the auditorium empties instantly; keep a nearby meal option. |
| 12:10–12:45 | Official route to Venue B | Includes walking, waiting and the ride; verify the route that morning. |
| 12:45 | Required arrival at Venue B | This is the venue’s rule-based deadline, not an arbitrary buffer. |
| 13:15 | Second film | If the transfer slips past the deadline, switch to the nearby backup. |
| 15:30 | Open block | Reserved for a waitlist, a same-film alternative, rest or a delayed transfer. |
The open block is what makes the itinerary resilient. Without it, one queue or shuttle delay would force every later choice to move.

What the official examples reveal about festival scale and access
The Festival de Cannes’ current ticket-office page describes between 35,000 and 40,000 festival goers and five to six screenings per day in each of its 10 theatres. Those figures explain why a popular screening can require advance planning even when many films are playing. The same page reports that in 2025, 90% of accredited users accessed the reservation site in under two minutes; that is a Cannes-specific historical statistic, not a promise for another edition.
Cannes also reports that 18,000 seats were allocated through last-minute queues in 2025 and that 95% of available invitations were reserved within 15 minutes in 2024. Both numbers describe those editions’ available capacity and behavior. They demonstrate that last-minute opportunities can be substantial while remaining highly competitive; they do not make a rush line a dependable substitute for a ticket.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The first film runs late
Check whether the second ticket can be used after its stated deadline. If not, stop trying to force the connection and use the backup you selected before the day began.
The app will not load
Use the saved ticket, permitted printout or confirmation number. Move to a location with connectivity only if doing so will not make you miss the entry deadline. Sundance specifically warns that poor network coverage can affect app and website access.

The shuttle is delayed
Check the current festival transport notice, then use the fallback route or nearby replacement. Do not rely on an old timetable simply because it worked on another day.
