Keep original videos, stream-ready copies, the playback playlist, configuration, logs, and recordings in separate places. Then generate an explicit playlist manifest from approved files and configure FFmpeg or another encoder to send a compatible stream to YouTube. This makes the rotation easier to audit and update without accidentally including temporary or excluded footage.
Use a directory layout with one purpose per folder
YouTube does not mandate a VPS directory structure. This layout is a practical starting point, adapted from a public Ubuntu VPS example rather than a universal standard:

Keep originals separate from playback copies
Preserve incoming files in source-video/. Put only the copies intended for playback in stream-ready/. If output settings or formats change later, retaining the originals avoids having to retrieve source material again. Normalize a copy only when it helps make playback consistent; it is not necessary to re-encode every file just because it is stored in a particular folder.

Keep the active selection explicit
Use excluded/ for material deliberately removed from rotation, and generate playlists/video.txt from an approved selection. Avoid a broad wildcard that could pull in temporary exports, duplicates, or rejected items. If preserving rotation order matters, back up the generated manifest alongside your configuration or keep it under version control. These are operational practices, not YouTube rules.
Build and maintain the playback playlist
- Receive: Add each new file to
media/source-video/and preserve the original. - Review: Check the content and decide whether it belongs in the rotation. Keep rejected, retired, or temporarily withheld files out of the active selection.
- Prepare: If consistency requires it, create a playback copy in
media/stream-ready/. Test representative audio and motion at the intended output settings; YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. - Generate: Rebuild the ordered manifest in
playlists/video.txtafter additions, removals, or ordering changes. - Review before restart: Inspect the manifest to confirm that its paths and order match the intended rotation before starting or restarting the encoder.
A text manifest gives you a clear record of what the encoder is meant to play. The public VPS example uses an FFmpeg playlist pattern, but its particular commands and service configuration should not be treated as a guaranteed or universal deployment.
Set the encoder output for YouTube
Stored file properties and live encoder output are separate decisions. You do not need to make every source file match the stream bitrate; configure the encoder’s output for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

Codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and specifies constant bitrate encoding. For H.264, the page gives 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are output-setting recommendations for those modes, not required properties for your source library. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
Choose a target that fits your content and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom and advise monitoring stream quality, accessibility, and local archive growth.
Use RTMPS and protect the key
For an ordinary encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS. It is RTMP over SSL; Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Follow the endpoint and server URL shown for your stream in YouTube’s encoder setup rather than assuming that every stream uses an identical address.

In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the server URL and stream key provided in its setup. Configure those values in the encoder’s streaming settings, as described in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not commit a real key to a public repository or leave it in publicly readable scripts. Store configuration with appropriate access restrictions.
Choose between re-encoding and stream copy
VPS sizing depends on the workflow and cannot be reduced to a reliable one-size-fits-all CPU or RAM figure. FFmpeg re-encoding requires more compute than stream-copying compatible files; either way, the VPS needs stable outbound connectivity for the selected stream.

- Normalize files in advance: This can make a mixed library more consistent and reduce recurring encoding work during playback. It also requires preparing and storing copies. The public VPS example uses advance normalization, but no comparative benchmark establishes a performance advantage for every library.
- Transcode during the stream: This offers flexibility for mixed source formats or changing output settings, but increases live compute demand. Confirm the VPS can sustain the chosen output and monitor the encoder while it runs.
- Stream-copy compatible files: This avoids re-encoding those files, but only works where their streams are compatible with the output and ingestion setup. Do not assume every source file can be copied unchanged into the live output.
Pick a target resolution and bitrate, verify sustained VPS capacity and outbound bandwidth, leave headroom, and check the actual stream. The available guidance does not establish a universal VPS specification or a measured failure rate.

Plan for long broadcasts and recordings
A continuous broadcast and a complete YouTube replay are not the same thing. YouTube’s archive live streams guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable copy, keep a local recording as well.
Decide whether to end and restart on a schedule
One long broadcast prioritizes uninterrupted viewing; scheduled shorter broadcasts can make archives more manageable. The appropriate schedule depends on whether your priority is continuous availability, replayable segments, or both. The guidance does not establish one schedule that suits every channel.
Monitor recordings and disk use
Keep recordings in recordings/, check that local files are accessible and growing, and monitor free disk space. Set a retention or rotation policy before the VPS fills up. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking local archive growth and ongoing audio and video quality.

Run an operating check after playlist or encoder changes
- Check that the manifest contains only approved files in the intended order.
- Confirm the encoder is using the intended YouTube server URL, protected stream key, output codec, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and check stream health; verify that the watch page is accessible.
- Monitor encoder and service logs, outbound traffic, VPS disk use, and local recording growth.
- Check audio and picture during operation, not only at startup. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of stream quality.
A community VPS example runs an FFmpeg process under systemd with automatic restart. That is one possible service-management pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted availability or a YouTube requirement. A restart policy can relaunch a process; it does not replace monitoring the resulting stream.
Troubleshoot common organization and streaming problems
- Unexpected clips appear in the rotation: The manifest may have been generated from a broad wildcard or an unreviewed folder. Generate it from the approved selection, inspect the ordered list, and keep excluded or temporary files outside that selection.
- Playback varies between files: The source formats or characteristics may differ. Test representative audio and motion at the intended output settings, and normalize copies where that improves consistency.
- The encoder cannot sustain the output: Live transcoding may exceed available compute, or outbound capacity may be insufficient. Check logs and actual stream health, lower the chosen output demand if needed, and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom. There is no established universal CPU or VPS size to substitute for checking your workload.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the server URL, stream key, selected RTMPS endpoint, and port 443 configuration. Check that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use local recording when preservation matters, and consider scheduled shorter broadcasts if manageable replay segments are important.
- The VPS runs out of space: Check recording growth and apply the retention policy for local archives. Keep the active playback library and archives distinct so cleanup does not remove files needed for rotation.
