To host Raising Superheroes, contact Prevention United at [email protected], request the current screening toolkit and permission form, and obtain written approval before announcing the event. The announced programme allows communities, schools and community organisations across Australia to hold free screenings through March 2027, in person or virtually. The exact licence terms, delivery method and conditions are not published, so treat the programme as an invitation to apply—not as blanket permission to show the film.
What Raising Superheroes is
Raising Superheroes is an Australian documentary produced in 2026. It runs for approximately 92 minutes, is directed by Shannon Harvey and produced by Shannon Harvey and Julian Harvey. Harvey investigates whether mental illness can be prevented by visiting early-childhood centres, schools, researchers and community programmes in Australia and overseas.
The film presents prevention as work that starts upstream. Its synopsis highlights safety, connection and stable relationships as protective factors, rather than waiting until a crisis requires treatment. That makes a facilitated community screening useful for schools, parent groups, local services, councils and other organisations discussing how environments affect children’s mental health.
What permission has been announced—and what it does not yet establish
The public event FAQ says organisers will be able to host the film both virtually and in person. A release notice says communities, schools and community organisations across Australia can host free screenings until March 2027. The FAQ says screening toolkits are expected at the end of October 2026 and asks interested organisers to email Prevention United for updates.

When to contact the rights team
Email [email protected] as soon as you have a realistic event concept. If you are writing before the toolkit is released, ask to be notified when the end-of-October 2026 toolkit becomes available. Do not assume that the public screening announcement itself authorises a particular venue, date or audience.
Information to include in your first email
- Your name and the organisation responsible for the event.
- Country and Australian state or territory.
- Proposed venue or virtual platform.
- Preferred screening date and a backup date.
- Expected attendance, including whether the audience is mainly adults, teenagers, families, students or professionals.
- Whether the event is in person or virtual.
- Whether admission will be free or paid. The announced programme refers to free screenings, but the applicable permission should confirm whether your event qualifies.
- Whether you want a discussion, panel or Q&A after the film.

Get the permission terms in writing
Ask the rights contact to answer each item below explicitly. Keep the approval email, signed form and any technical instructions with your event records.
| Term to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Territory | Confirm that the permission covers your Australian state or territory and, for a virtual event, where online viewers may be located. |
| Authorised dates | Check the exact start and end dates. The public notice mentions free screenings through March 2027, but your approval should state the dates granted to you. |
| Fee and admission | Ask whether the permission is free, whether donations are allowed and whether charging admission changes the approval. |
| Audience size | Confirm a permitted capacity or any registration limit, especially for a public livestream. |
| Playback file or platform | Find out whether you receive a downloadable file, a private stream, a platform link or another delivery method, and which equipment or software it requires. |
| Publicity assets | Request approved artwork, synopsis wording, logos and any rules for using stills or trailers. |
| Attribution | Obtain the exact credit line required on invitations, event pages, slides and spoken introductions. |
| Recording and rebroadcast | Ask whether you may record the discussion, livestream the event, make a replay available or capture audience questions. Do not record by default. |
| Accessibility | Confirm caption files, audio-description availability, transcript permission and any requirements for accessible online playback. |
| Panel or Q&A | Ask whether post-film discussion is covered by the screening permission or needs separate approval. |
If an answer is missing, treat that item as unresolved. A venue booking, public ticket page or social post should wait until the rights contact has confirmed the relevant terms.

Choose the event format deliberately
The film can be presented as an in-person or virtual screening. The right choice depends on audience access, venue capability, discussion goals and the conditions in your written permission.
| Decision point | In-person screening | Virtual screening |
|---|---|---|
| Audience experience | Shared room, easier informal conversation and a clear end time. | People can join from different locations, but household viewing conditions vary. |
| Technical dependency | Requires a venue, screen, sound system and the approved playback method. | Requires the permitted platform, reliable internet and a way to control access. |
| Capacity | Limited by the venue’s lawful occupancy and the rights holder’s audience limit. | Limited by the platform and the rights holder’s authorised audience size. |
| Accessibility | Check captions on the playback system, sightlines, hearing assistance and physical access. | Check caption support, screen-reader compatibility, participant privacy and a help channel. |
| Discussion | Panelists can remain on stage or move to a moderated conversation. | Use the approved platform’s Q&A or chat only if the permission and privacy plan allow it. |
| Rights questions | Confirm territory, date, audience and whether the file may be retained after the event. | Also confirm viewer geography, password or registration controls, recording and replay rules. |
A free community event and a ticketed event are not automatically equivalent. State the admission model in your permission request even if you expect to charge only to recover venue costs.
Plan an in-person screening
Secure a suitable venue
- Ask the venue whether it can lawfully host your expected audience and whether its occupancy, emergency and accessibility arrangements are current.
- Confirm the available inputs, resolution, aspect ratio, speakers, microphone and lighting controls before accepting the playback file.
- Arrange a private test session with the approved file or link. Check dialogue clarity from the back row, subtitle readability and whether the picture is cropped.
- Keep the rights confirmation available for venue staff who need to verify that the screening is authorised.
Schedule the programme
The premiere format paired a roughly 90-minute film with a 30-minute panel. A similar programme needs at least two hours once you add seating, introductions and a short exit period. If your event includes registration, a content note or audience questions, reserve additional time rather than cutting the discussion short.
Control access and publicity
Use the approved title, synopsis, artwork and attribution supplied by the rights contact. Do not upload the film, distribute an unapproved file or publish a public stream link. If registration is required, collect only the information you need and explain how attendees will receive access details.

Plan a virtual screening
- Confirm the delivery model. Ask whether viewers receive individual access codes, a single moderated stream or another approved method. Do not select a platform solely because it is familiar.
- Set geography and dates. Your permission should state who may watch and during which window. Tell registrants that forwarding access details may breach the conditions.
- Test captions and playback. Check captions, audio balance, pause or seek controls and behaviour on common computers and mobile devices. If the stream is geoblocked or time-limited, test from the audience location.
- Protect the link. Use registration, passwords or platform controls required by the rights holder. Disable recording and downloads unless written permission says otherwise.
- Provide support. Send joining instructions, a contact method and a start-time reminder. Have a moderator ready to handle access problems without sharing the film publicly.
- Close the event correctly. End the stream when the authorised window closes, remove replay links and delete files or credentials when the permission requires it.
Make the event safe and accessible
The event FAQ notes that the film discusses childhood adversity and mental health and suggests an audience age of 15 and over. Younger children may attend at their parents’ discretion. Put that information on the registration page, invitation and opening slide; it is not a substitute for parents making their own decision.
- Use a plain content note that mentions childhood adversity and mental-health themes without describing scenes unnecessarily.
- Identify a quiet space or a way to step out of the room. In a virtual event, explain how attendees can leave without losing access permanently.
- Provide local support options appropriate to your state or territory. A facilitator should know how to direct someone to urgent help, but the screening is not a counselling session.
- Ask the rights contact what captions, transcripts or audio description are available and use only materials you are authorised to distribute.
- Brief panelists not to invite personal disclosures from the audience or imply that the film can diagnose or treat anyone.
Build a useful discussion without overstating the evidence
The film’s prevention theme can open a conversation about safety, connection, stable relationships, early-childhood settings and schools. Frame those as protective factors explored by the documentary, not as guarantees that a particular programme will prevent mental illness.
FilmInk’s 2026 release notice says that half of all mental illness begins before age 14 and 75% before age 24. The same notice says less than 1% of Australia’s federal mental-health budget is directed towards prevention. Because the notice attributes these figures to its release copy rather than presenting the underlying studies, identify them as figures quoted in that notice and invite a qualified speaker to provide source context before using them as policy evidence.
Shannon Harvey is quoted in the release notice saying: “Mental illness is not inevitable. The conditions children grow up in can profoundly influence their mental health, and prevention is already working in communities around the world.” Present this as the director’s view, not as a clinical promise. A strong moderator can ask what evidence supports prevention, which communities have evaluated their programmes, and how families can avoid placing blame on children or parents.

Understand the release timetable
Australian theatrical premieres were scheduled for October 2026 in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with a selection at the Byron Bay Film Festival. The community programme is announced for free screenings by Australian communities, schools and community organisations through March 2027, subject to the permission granted to each organiser.
The FAQ says the film will be free online for seven days in November 2026, then available to purchase on Google Play, Amazon Prime and iTunes. Those statements describe digital availability only; they do not establish a DVD or Blu-ray edition. A digital purchase for personal viewing is not the same as permission to organise a public screening, so ask the rights contact for the event-specific authorisation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Budget and responsibilities to settle before committing
The public information does not state a licence fee, insurance obligation, venue charge, equipment cost or platform cost. A “free screening” announcement may refer to the audience price, not every expense incurred by the organiser. Prepare a simple budget that separates venue hire, projection and sound, captioning or accessibility services, insurance, moderator or panel expenses, registration tools, refreshments and contingency.
Ask who is responsible for each item in writing. In particular, confirm whether the rights holder supplies the file and captions, whether you may make a local backup, who handles technical support and what happens if the authorised stream fails. Do not describe an event as free to organisers unless the permission terms actually waive the costs you would otherwise pay.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Advertising before approval
Problem: A poster announces a date while the rights request is still unanswered. Fix: Use a private “save the date” only within your team, and publish the public listing after written permission confirms the date, format and territory.
Assuming a personal digital purchase is a screening licence
Problem: An organiser buys the film from a digital store and plays it for a group. Fix: Request the community screening permission even if the title is available for individual purchase.
Using an unapproved copy or platform
Problem: A file is downloaded from an unknown source or uploaded to a convenient service. Fix: Use only the delivery method specified by the rights contact and retain the technical instructions.
Recording the event automatically
Problem: A panel or livestream is recorded and posted as a replay. Fix: Ask for separate recording and rebroadcast permission; if it is not granted, disable recording and remove any accidental capture.

Problem: Captions are unreadable, absent or incompatible with the venue system. Fix: Confirm accessibility requirements during the permission process and test them with the exact playback setup.
Treating discussion as therapy
Problem: A facilitator asks attendees to disclose trauma or promises that prevention will work for everyone. Fix: Set boundaries, provide support information and keep questions focused on evidence, services and community conditions.
Final organiser checklist
- Permission request sent to [email protected].
- Toolkit and permission form obtained, or a written update requested while the toolkit is pending.
- Territory, dates, format, audience size and admission model confirmed in writing.
- Approved file or platform, publicity wording, attribution and accessibility materials received.
- Recording, replay, rebroadcast and panel/Q&A rules understood.
- Venue or virtual platform tested with the authorised delivery method.
- Age guidance, content note and local support route published.
- Moderator and technical contact assigned.
- Registration, access controls and privacy arrangements checked.
- Post-event files, links and credentials scheduled for deletion when the permission requires it.
A successful community screening is therefore a rights-cleared event, not simply a group viewing. Start with the written screening permission, design the format around the confirmed conditions, and build enough time and care into the programme for audiences to engage with the film’s prevention themes responsibly.
