To stop buffering, test the connection where the video is playing, compare it with that service’s guidance, then check Wi-Fi, household traffic, playback settings, and device capability—in that order. Your internet plan’s advertised speed is only one part of the route between a streaming service and your screen.
Find out where the problem is
First identify the scope: does buffering affect one app, one device, one room, or every device in the home? A problem limited to one device or room points first to its Wi-Fi signal, software, or hardware. A simultaneous slowdown across several devices suggests competing household traffic, a modem or router issue, an ISP outage, or congestion farther along the route. Netflix notes that congestion anywhere between its servers and the screen can affect playback, not just congestion in your home network (Netflix: How Netflix streams videos).
Measure speed at the device that is buffering
Run a speed test on or near the affected TV, computer, or streaming device, ideally while the problem is occurring. If practical, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. A test taken at the router does not show exactly what a distant TV receives.
Treat each test as a snapshot, not a guarantee of performance to every service. Google says results can vary with the test-server location, time, congestion, device, and Wi-Fi conditions (Google: Test internet speed and improve your Nest or Google Wifi internet connection). Repeat the test at the time buffering usually occurs and note the device, connection type, time, and result.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use service-specific speed guidance
| Provider guidance | Video use | Recommended speed |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 720p HD | At least 3 Mbps stable connection |
| Netflix | 1080p Full HD | At least 5 Mbps stable connection |
| Netflix | 4K UHD | At least 15 Mbps stable connection |
| Google Nest/Google Wifi household estimate | One HD video stream | 7 Mbps |
| Google Nest/Google Wifi household estimate | Multiple HD video streams | 25 Mbps |
These are each provider’s guidance, not universal guarantees or directly interchangeable measurements. Netflix’s recommendations are for Netflix playback; Google’s figures are practical household-use estimates. Allow extra capacity for other people and devices using the connection at the same time. Netflix’s current speed guidance is available at Netflix-recommended internet speeds.
Improve a weak Wi-Fi connection
- Bring the device and router closer. If possible, test in the same room. A weak signal through distance or walls can make a fast internet plan perform poorly at the screen.
- Move the router into the open. Place it off the floor rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet.
- Reduce interference and obstructions. Keep the router away from other wireless devices and appliances. Walls and metal objects can obstruct the signal; YouTube also advises keeping the playback device within range and minimizing interference (YouTube: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer).
- Try Ethernet if both ends support it. Connect the device directly to the router using a suitable cable and available Ethernet ports. If wired playback improves, Wi-Fi was likely part of the problem. Ethernet will not fix slow ISP service, congestion upstream, or a device that cannot play the desired format. Netflix recommends wired or Wi-Fi networking when available (Netflix: How to get the best video quality).
Reduce competing network traffic
Pause large downloads and, if possible, other high-bandwidth activities such as game downloads, online gaming, video calls, or simultaneous streams while you troubleshoot. These activities share available capacity. Google recommends reviewing connected-device use and notes that device prioritization, where supported, can help manage traffic (Google: Troubleshoot slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi). Prioritization can change which device gets capacity first; it does not add capacity to your connection.

Household demand helps explain why different providers publish different figures. Google’s estimate is 7 Mbps for one HD video stream and 25 Mbps for multiple HD streams, while Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for Netflix at 1080p. Use the guidance relevant to your service and account for concurrent use rather than averaging the numbers.
Check playback quality, plan, and device support
- Confirm the subscription tier. Check that your plan includes the quality you want.
- Check the entire playback chain. The streaming device, app, display, and any connected equipment must support the desired resolution and format.
- Update software and firmware. Install current updates for the app, playback device, and relevant equipment.
- Review playback and display settings. Check the service’s playback-data setting, profile settings, and the device’s resolution setting for an unintended quality limit.
- Allow adaptive playback to settle. Netflix says playback may begin at lower resolution and rise after a short time as the stream adapts to the connection.
- Consider data caps. A higher data-usage setting can use more data, so weigh quality against your monthly allowance.

Restart and escalate if the issue continues
- Restart the modem and router if buffering persists after checking placement and household traffic. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions.
- Check whether your ISP reports an outage.
- If several devices still struggle, contact the ISP. Share test results, the time of each test, affected devices, and whether each was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix advises contacting the ISP when connection speed falls below its guidance (Netflix: TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering).
- If only one device remains affected despite a sound connection test, update or troubleshoot that device, or contact its manufacturer.
If you broadcast live, check upload capacity too
For watching videos, the relevant measure is generally download performance at the playback device. Creators sending a live stream need sufficient upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom within available upload bandwidth for the total stream bitrate; the bitrate should not exceed what the connection can sustain (YouTube: Streaming tips). This is a recommendation for live-streaming upload capacity, not a download-speed target for viewers.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video stream that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
