How to Normalize Podcast Audio Before Streaming It on YouTube 24/7

A practical workflow for measuring and normalizing podcast episodes before a 24/7 YouTube Live stream—without mistaking a broadcast reference or encoder bitrate for a YouTube loudness rule.

Normalize each prerecorded episode before it enters your continuous YouTube Live playlist, then configure the live encoder separately. Measure loudness and true peak, choose a consistent target for your own library, process and audition representative episodes, and test the actual stream. YouTube’s published live-encoder settings do not specify a podcast LUFS target, so no single loudness number can be presented as a YouTube requirement.

What normalization does—and what it does not

Loudness normalization helps episodes play at a more consistent perceived level. That is different from matching sample peaks: an episode can have a modest peak but still sound much quieter than another. Measure integrated loudness and true peak when comparing files and managing overs.

Normalization does not repair clipped or noisy recordings, balance different speakers automatically, or guarantee that a mix will sound good. If an episode has wide level differences within it, processing may change its dynamics; listen to the result rather than trusting the meter alone. Keep original masters and make separate stream copies.

Choose a target without treating it as a YouTube rule

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies transmission settings, not an integrated-loudness target for podcast audio. EBU R 128 version 5.0 recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS in its broadcast context and uses Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is a broadcast reference, not a stated YouTube requirement.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick one editorial target for your own episode library, then evaluate it in an actual test stream. The right choice can depend on the source material, speech and music balance, desired dynamics, and other destinations. The cited guidance does not establish −14 LUFS, −16 LUFS, or any other number as the universal target for a YouTube podcast livestream.

Normalize prerecorded episodes with FFmpeg

Measure and select representative material

Start with full episodes where practical, including the quietest and loudest shows. Also check representative sections and transitions. Aim for sensible episode-to-episode consistency; avoid processing every brief moment so aggressively that natural dynamics or speech emphasis disappear.

FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports EBU R 128 loudness normalization and controls for integrated loudness (I), loudness range (LRA), and maximum true peak (TP). The filter documentation supports single-pass normalization for files and livestreams, and double-pass normalization for files.

Use a file workflow when you can analyze the episode first

A file can be measured before processing, allowing a two-pass workflow using the source measurements. This is useful when preparing a library of prerecorded episodes: process the files consistently, then audition the exports. Check that your installed FFmpeg build includes the filter; availability and behavior can vary by build.

Example starting command

This is an illustrative configuration, not a tested command or guaranteed preset. It uses −23 LUFS as an example target based on the EBU broadcast recommendation—not a YouTube mandate—and example LRA and true-peak parameters that YouTube does not prescribe:

ffmpeg -i episode.wav -af "loudnorm=I=-23:LRA=7:TP=-2" -ar 44100 -c:a aac -b:a 128k episode-normalized.m4a

Measure the output and listen before using it in the stream. FFmpeg’s documentation notes that linear normalization may revert to dynamic mode if measured conditions cannot meet the requested limits. The command above illustrates single-pass processing; for a file-based two-pass workflow, first collect measurements and use them in the normalization pass, following the filter documentation.

Decide between offline and live processing

Approach When it fits Trade-off
File-based two-pass Episodes are prerecorded and can be measured before streaming. Allows the source measurements to inform processing, but requires a preparation step for each file.
Single-pass normalization Useful for files or a live input that cannot wait for a second analysis pass. Processes without a prior file-measurement pass; listen and monitor the resulting sound.
Pre-normalized episode files You want to prepare and audition episodes before adding them to a continuous playlist. Requires maintaining processed stream copies alongside originals.
Real-time processing The incoming audio is live or processing must occur during playback. There is no second pass over the complete source before it is heard.

Configure the YouTube Live encoder separately

Normalization sets programme loudness; encoder settings control how audio and video are transmitted. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s live guidance allows AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.

Do not mistake the audio bitrate for a loudness target. The 128 kbps recommendation describes encoding, not how loud the podcast should sound.

Test and monitor the continuous stream

Before relying on a 24/7 feed, test it with representative content. YouTube advises checking the Live Control Room preview, testing audio and video similar to what the stream will contain, keeping outbound bitrate within available upload capacity, and allowing 20% bandwidth headroom. It also recommends a reliable connection and continuous monitoring of audio and video quality.

Common normalization and streaming problems

Episodes still sound different after processing

Check that you used a consistent target and compared whole episodes or representative sections rather than isolated peaks. Audition speech, music, and transitions; loudness measurements do not replace listening.

The result sounds squeezed or unnatural

Processing can alter dynamic material. Revisit the target and LRA settings, compare the export with the original, and listen to the quiet and loud sections. Do not assume normalization can correct a poor recording or different speaker levels by itself.

The output is silent, clipped, or rejected by the workflow

Confirm the input file, output path, and FFmpeg build; check that loudnorm is available and review the filter output. Listen to the exported file before placing it in the playlist. Existing clipping cannot be undone simply by normalizing afterward.

The stream has intermittent silence or drops

Use the Live Control Room preview and monitor the feed while it runs. Check the playback system and connection, and keep outbound streaming needs within available upload capacity with headroom. YouTube recommends testing before the stream and monitoring ongoing audio and video quality.

Or let it run in the cloud

For the continuous playback and YouTube Live part, StreamNeo keeps uploaded recordings or playlists running from the cloud; it does not normalize audio, so prepare and audition your episodes first. Upload the files, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer, OBS, and home connection do not need to remain running. StreamNeo plays uploads to YouTube only, supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
