Keep producing locally in OBS (or another encoder), then send the finished feed to a cloud service that handles ingest, processing, and delivery—or move more of the pipeline into cloud-managed components. The right choice depends on how much infrastructure you want to operate, your latency and reliability needs, and the audience you expect.
What “moving to the cloud” means
A live stream has several stages: production (cameras, microphones, graphics, and scene switching), ingest (sending the program feed to a service), encoding or transcoding, packaging, recording, and delivery to viewers. Cloud migration means shifting some or all of those stages to hosted services; it does not automatically mean moving camera production out of your studio.
Before choosing a service, write down your current encoder and destinations, expected audience size and geography, required glass-to-glass latency, recording and playback needs, and how much downtime an event can tolerate. Those constraints determine whether a simple managed service is enough or whether a more complex redundant architecture is justified.
Choose an operating model
| Model | How it works | Best fit and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Managed ingest-to-delivery service | Production software sends RTMPS or SRT to a live input. The service processes the feed and provides playback or delivery. | Less infrastructure to configure and a shorter path to a player; you have less control over the underlying components. Cloudflare documents this model for Stream. Cloudflare Stream live video |
| Cloud-managed building blocks | Configure separate ingest, encoding, packaging or origin, and CDN services. AWS documents a MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront reference workflow. | More control and options for redundancy, with more setup and operational responsibility. AWS live-streaming architecture overview |
| Interactive, subsecond workflow | Consider WebRTC when conversation-like latency is essential. | Useful for interactive use cases; AWS cautions that stateful WebRTC approaches do not scale as effectively for one-to-many distribution. AWS live-streaming guidance |
Compare options against the same requirements: latency, concurrent viewers and their locations, ingest protocols and codecs, recording, redundancy, operational expertise, and total usage cost. An architecture that works for a small private event may not be suitable for a large public broadcast.

Map the signal path before configuring anything
Managed service
The basic path is: camera and audio sources → OBS or another encoder → cloud live input → service processing and delivery → viewer player. Your local software can continue handling cameras and scene changes while the cloud takes over downstream work.
Component architecture
A larger design typically follows: production encoder → ingest → cloud encoding → packaging or origin → CDN → viewers. Each additional component can add control or redundancy, but also adds configuration, monitoring, and potential failure points. AWS’s reference workflow uses MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront; it is an architectural example, not a mandatory stack. See the AWS architecture overview.

Move a production feed to a managed cloud input
- Create a live input. In your chosen provider’s dashboard, create a live input and note its ingest endpoint, required protocol, and stream key. Labels and supported options vary by provider.
- Protect the credentials. Treat the stream key like a password. Restrict access, avoid showing it in screenshots or recordings, and rotate or revoke it if exposed. Cloudflare documents key rotation and revocation for Stream. Cloudflare’s live-stream setup guide
- Configure the encoder for that provider. In OBS, choose the provider’s recommended service or select a custom service when the provider supplies a URL and key. Enter the ingest endpoint and key in the matching fields. Do not assume another provider uses the same protocol, codec, or settings.
- Set compatible video and audio. Use a codec and rate-control mode accepted by the input. For Cloudflare Stream, the live-stream documentation lists H.264 video and AAC audio, requires closed GOPs, and recommends CBR when possible for stability. These are Cloudflare-specific requirements and recommendations, not universal rules. Cloudflare live-stream setup documentation
- Choose bitrate and keyframes deliberately. Cloudflare says creator bitrate is typically well under 12 Mbps, adjusted for motion and frame rate. Its documented general GOP/keyframe interval recommendation is 2–8 seconds: shorter intervals can reduce latency but reduce encoding efficiency; longer intervals improve efficiency but raise latency. Confirm the target provider’s current guidance before applying these values to another service.
- Enable reconnection. Make sure the encoder retries after a network or ingest interruption. Cloudflare notes that OBS reconnects automatically, while FFmpeg may need custom configuration. Cloudflare’s live-stream documentation
- Start a test feed and verify the whole path. Confirm the provider reports an active connection, then check actual viewer playback, audio/video sync, image quality, and latency. A connected encoder alone does not prove that viewers can watch successfully.
For a vendor-specific OBS example, Cloudflare’s walkthrough creates a live input, copies the RTMPS URL and key, sets OBS to Custom, adds a test source, starts streaming, and checks the connected status and preview. Its own service’s interface and settings should not be treated as a universal OBS recipe. Cloudflare’s OBS walkthrough
Plan latency, scale, and resilience
Latency
Measure the delay viewers actually experience, not only the encoder’s output. For one-way events, a modest delay may be acceptable; auctions, audience call-ins, or live instruction may require tighter interaction. AWS recommends considering WebRTC when subsecond, video-conference-like latency is required, while noting its scaling tradeoff for one-to-many distribution. AWS guidance on live-stream scenarios

Audience scale and geography
Consider where viewers are located and whether delivery needs a CDN. AWS’s guidance says an origin may serve tens or hundreds of viewers but recommends a CDN to scale beyond a handful; treat that as architectural guidance, not a guaranteed threshold for every provider or workload. AWS Streaming Media Lens
Redundancy
For consequential events, identify what can fail: the production connection, ingest endpoint, encoder, cloud region or zone, and delivery path. AWS recommends considering ingest in at least two Availability Zones using diverse network paths for high-importance events; its reference design uses two feeds for MediaLive redundancy and carries primary and secondary streams through processing. Redundancy increases cost and operational complexity, so match it to the event’s failure tolerance. AWS architecture overview

Estimate costs from the workload
Do not compare cloud prices without matching event duration, viewer hours, recording retention, output profiles and bitrates, delivery geography, redundancy, and whether the channel runs continuously.
- Cloudflare Stream: its pricing page lists $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered and $5 per month per 1,000 minutes of storage capacity. The vendor says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivery. Its example calculates two viewers watching for 30 minutes as 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. These are Cloudflare’s published figures accessed October 3, 2026; check the current page before budgeting. Cloudflare Stream pricing
- AWS reference architecture: AWS says cost varies with encoding profile, stream bitrate, and viewer count. An event-oriented solution can be deployed for an event and deleted afterward, but actual spend depends on configuration and usage. AWS cost and architecture notes
For an estimate, model event length, how long each viewer watches, expected concurrent viewers, retained recordings, output renditions, geographic distribution, and any redundant feeds. For a continuously running channel, use continuous operation—not a one-off event—as the billing assumption.

Migrate in stages and keep a fallback
- Build the cloud input and configure the encoder while your existing workflow remains available.
- Run a private or unlisted test, then check the stream from a viewer device and network different from the production machine.
- Compare picture, sound, synchronization, startup delay, and latency with the current path.
- Test a planned encoder or network interruption and confirm the configured recovery behavior.
- For an important event, retain a fallback path until the cloud route has been proven in your own environment.
- After the test, document the endpoint, credential owner, rotation procedure, alerting, and who is responsible for restoring service.
Common migration problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud input never reports connected | Incorrect URL, key, protocol, or encoder service selection. | Re-copy the endpoint and key from the live input; verify the selected protocol and that the input is active. |
| Input connects but playback fails | Incompatible codec, audio format, or packaging/delivery configuration. | Check the provider’s accepted codecs and inspect playback from a separate viewer device. |
| Frequent buffering or unstable picture | Bitrate too high for the available upload path, variable bitrate behavior, or an unstable connection. | Check sustained upstream capacity and use the provider’s rate-control guidance; Cloudflare recommends CBR where possible for stability. |
| Delay is too high for interaction | The chosen delivery workflow prioritizes one-to-many distribution over subsecond exchange. | Measure glass-to-glass latency and assess whether a WebRTC approach is needed; consider its scaling tradeoff. |
| Stream stops after a brief disconnect | Reconnect behavior is disabled or not configured for the encoder. | Enable retry/reconnect settings and verify recovery in a test. Cloudflare notes OBS reconnects automatically, whereas FFmpeg may require custom configuration. |
| Unexpected bill | Viewing minutes, storage retention, bitrate, output profiles, or redundancy differed from the estimate. | Recalculate using actual viewing duration and retention, and include all feeds and delivery paths. |
