How to Stream from OBS Studio to Wowza Using RTMP

Set up OBS as a custom RTMP encoder for Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine, then verify the incoming stream in the right Wowza interface.

To stream OBS to Wowza, create or select the correct destination in Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine, copy the connection values shown for that destination, then enter them in OBS under Settings > Stream using the custom server option. The two Wowza products have different setup screens and connection details, so use the values from your own account or server—not a generic example.

1. Identify which Wowza product you are using

Wowza Video is a hosted service. Wowza Streaming Engine is media-server software installed in your environment. The destination values and the place you verify an incoming stream differ between them.

Destination Where to get connection details What to check after publishing
Wowza Video The live stream’s Overview page, after creating or selecting a stream configured for an RTMP encoder source The stream’s video preview and metrics
Wowza Streaming Engine Application Connection Settings in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, for the live application you created or selected The live source or application status in Manager, including whether the source is listed

For either product, obtain the server or ingest address, port, application, stream name, and any required source credentials from the destination you will publish to. These values are specific to the account, server, or application.

2. Get the Wowza destination ready

Wowza Video

  1. Create or select a live stream and configure its source as an RTMP encoder.
  2. Open the stream’s Overview page and locate its source connection information. Record the assigned ingest server, port, application, stream name or key, and source username and password.
  3. Use the values displayed for this stream. Wowza’s encoder instructions describe an RTMP URL built from the primary ingest server, port, and assigned application; do not substitute an address copied from a different stream.
  4. If your encoder supports it, Wowza Video also accepts RTMPS on port 443. Use the protocol and connection values provided for your stream.

Wowza Streaming Engine

  1. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will receive the OBS source.
  2. Open that application’s Application Connection Settings and note the server, port, application, stream name, and source login requirements.
  3. Use the settings for your own Engine instance. TCP port 1935 is Streaming Engine’s documented default streaming port, but deployments can use a different port or network configuration.

3. Enter the Wowza values in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and go to Settings > Stream.
  2. Choose the custom streaming service/server option rather than relying on a dedicated Wowza preset.
  3. Enter the Wowza-provided server URL in OBS’s server field and the assigned stream name or key in the stream key field. Map the exact values shown in Wowza; OBS field names and the way a product presents its connection string may differ.
  4. For Wowza Video, enter the supplied source username and password in the encoder’s relevant authentication fields. For Streaming Engine, provide source credentials if source authentication is enabled. Do not publish screenshots or examples containing live credentials.
  5. Save the settings. Before an event, verify the destination and connection values again so OBS is not publishing to a different application or stream.

Wowza Streaming Engine requires RTMP/RTSP source authentication by default unless the application has been configured not to require it. If a connection is rejected, check the application’s authentication configuration and use the matching source login.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

4. Set OBS output and run a test

There is no single bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or codec profile established for every Wowza product, account, and workflow. Set OBS to the profile required by your particular destination and network, then test reception at Wowza rather than treating OBS’s own start indicator as proof the video arrived correctly.

  • In OBS output settings, choose video and audio bitrates appropriate to your available upload speed and the service limits for your workflow.
  • In OBS video settings, select the required resolution and frame rate. Avoid assuming a higher setting is better if the encoder, connection, or receiving workflow cannot support it.
  • Confirm that the stream name, server, port, application, and authentication values match the selected Wowza destination.
  1. For Wowza Video, start the live stream in Wowza, then start streaming in OBS. Check the Wowza video preview and metrics for received media.
  2. For Wowza Streaming Engine, start OBS and inspect the relevant application and live source status in Manager.
  3. Watch and listen to the receiving preview or output long enough to confirm stable video and audio. OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing for a few minutes rather than making the first test during a live broadcast.
  4. If the test fails, use the troubleshooting checks below before changing unrelated output settings.

5. Troubleshoot connection and media problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
OBS fails immediately or connects to the wrong destination The products’ server, port, application, and stream values may have been mixed up or mistyped. Compare every field with the connection information for the correct Wowza Video stream or Streaming Engine application. Do not use another account’s sample endpoint.
Authentication is rejected The source username or password may be missing or incorrect, or the application’s authentication setting may not match OBS. For Video, check the source credentials displayed with the stream settings. For Engine, confirm whether source authentication is enabled; it is required by default unless disabled in the application configuration.
The connection stalls or appears blocked The configured port or network/firewall rules may prevent the connection. Check the port shown in the destination settings and ask the network or system administrator to verify applicable firewall rules. Streaming Engine’s TCP 1935 is a default, not a guarantee for every deployment. For Wowza Video, RTMPS on port 443 is documented when the encoder supports it; switching protocols or ports is not guaranteed to resolve every network issue.
Wowza receives no usable audio or video The OBS output profile or stream mapping may not suit the destination. Recheck the OBS output settings and the assigned stream name, then run another short test and confirm reception in Wowza’s preview, metrics, or Manager status.
Surround or multichannel audio is required In OBS’s documented RTMP multichannel ingestion context, Wowza is among the servers tested; the guide notes that server-side recordings in that context retain only the first two channels. Confirm the channel and recording requirements for your particular Wowza workflow before relying on multichannel audio end to end.

Or let it run in the cloud

The OBS-to-Wowza workflow above sends a live scene from OBS to a Wowza destination. If instead your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that specific job; it does not replace Wowza for this OBS-to-Wowza setup and it streams to YouTube only.
